And you know obviously what teachings were wrong ? Or just the one who would eventually please your points ? In fact, there was only Anakin who wasn't pleased with the code and he didn't ended very well.

The picture shows it all. Rey has a lot in common in Anakin and it's clearly because Disney wanted to tell the story of the new chosen one and they gave 4 billions to Lucas for him to sell his baby. They want to make a lot of movies about Rey, as more as they can and as I stated before for all the children of the world, in 10 years, the whole Star Wars things is gonna be Rey's story. That's what story tellers do.

Maybe they are going to make a bridge with the Skywalker maybe not, it's their choice but it opens up a lot more without them in terms of story telling.

The funny thing is that many people complained because Ep VII was a lot like Ep IV and now they'll be disappointing if Ep VIII is not like Ep V ... I don't get it.

I can understand that people wanted to see more Luke and him to be the main character but he's 65 and you don't build future on a 65 years old actor or character. This is business and common sense.

The fact of the matter is, yes, the Jedi's views on love and family were wrong. Think about it, one thing that is obviously very important to George Lucas is the importance of family. A cursory look at his life will show you as much, the man is a very devoted father, and has also donated a great deal to charities that support things like education. When you read early interviews with George Lucas he talks about how he wanted to create movies that have good morals for children(there are some particularly enlightening interviews in the book The Making of The Empire Strikes Back). What kind of moral is it to teach children that love, as well as having a family is wrong? Answer, a pretty bad moral. Yep kids, one of the most natural emotions that any human can feel should be suppressed because it might cause complications and somebody might get hurt.

Think back to the PT, one of the things that fans find most frustrating about watching those films is how stupid the Jedi seem sometimes. Hey, the senator is in danger, lets send the padawan who anyone with eyes can see is attracted to her along to be her bodyguard. In RotS Anakin confides in Yoda and is very obviously deeply distressed, Yoda just spouts some nonsense about attachment and leaves it at that, and so on.

Now reexamine those movies if the Jedi didn't have some silly rule about forbidden love. Anakin and Padme fall in love, but they don't have to hide it from anyone(which would grant the audience the additional benefit of being spared some the worst dialogue in the PT ;)), Episode II ends with a nice little wedding where all of Anakin and Padme's friends and family attend, heck Obi-Wan is probably even the best man. Episode III rolls around and Anakin is a much more stable person because he doesn't have to hide half of his life from the Jedi Order. In fact, once Anakin starts to have bad premonitions about his wife, he can freely approach the Jedi for advice and support. Because of this fact he is able to get the support he needs from healthy sources and is not so vulnerable to seduction by Palpatine. He and Padme have kids and start a nice little family, the end. For an even more humorous take on this idea simply watch the HISHE video done for RotS on Youtube ;).

Granted, that would be boring and we wouldn't get the OT if that were the case, but it can't be argued that things couldn't have turned out much differently if the Jedi hadn't been so stiff and rigid in their teachings. Did Anakin fall to the Dark Side because of masterful manipulation by Sidious as well as attachment issues? The answer is obviously yes. But the fact is, the rigidness of Jedi teachings allowed Sidious the perfect in to manipulate Anakin, an opportunity that would not have been there had the Jedi had a more realistic outlook on how human emotions work.

As for the Chosen One nonsense, I have a hard time believing that the screenwriters for the new trilogy are going to reuse one of the most unpopular parts of the PT for Rey. Yep, its just another virgin birth, happens all the time. Despite this fact we will plant all kinds of clues hinting to some greater connection to the Skywalker family, but then, at the last moment, "Sorry everybody, Rey has no connections to the Skywalkers but is instead just another Chosen One"...

The point about Mark Hamill's age is irrelevant, we already know the new movies aren't going to focus on him, regardless of Rey's parentage.

Ontologically love has nothing to do with the passion between two people. It's acceptance.

Attachment is passion and passion is the first step of the sith code.

I think you have to interest more yourself in mysticism.

Yep, because passion is ALWAYS bad. Its not like passion is used to create great things like art. Even the Jedi apparently feel passionately about democracy, otherwise they wouldn't have pledged themselves to the Republic in the first place.

The Jedi and the Sith represent two opposite extremes. Letting your life be ruled by passion and emotion is going to cause you a lot of heartache, but conversely, living a life totally devoid of passion and emotion will lead to a pretty empty life. The fact is, in most things in life, the extreme viewpoints are seldom the ones that make the most sense, but rather, the balanced ones.

All of that being said though, the Jedi obviously do feel passionately about certain things and they do feel emotions such as happiness, they aren't robots after all. That's why their views on love are so backward, its silly to try and suppress emotions that are such a core part of humanity. The answer isn't to let those emotions rule you(as the Sith do), but instead to give them a balanced place in your life.

That is the logical human way to look at things, and is one of the reasons why it isn't out of the wheelhouse to suggest that Luke may have fallen in love at some point between RotJ and TFA.

Considering how Luke looks like I don't feel so. He looked a lot more like a wise Kenobi like dude than anything.

He's dressed like a jedi, he founded a jedi academy, there is absolutely no reason to think he betrayed the code.

As I said in many other threads in the Cantina, I wouldn't be adverse of Luke having found love or, at least, closeness to someone. I always disliked the whole Jedi monk thing, because I felt that it deprived the Jedi of essential part of humanity and made all their alleged compassion suspect. Luke was always different. His 'attachment' made him the Jedi. When he refused to kill his father, he became the Jedi. And, in my eyes, a more complete one than his predecessors.

So, yes, I can see him falling in love and having a relationship. That being said, I also don't see him obsessing about someone like Anakin did about Padme. His love for a woman would be a part of his life, not his entire life. If she was in danger, he would do anything in his power to save her, but he wouldn't burn the galaxy to do it. He would let go, if he must. Which is all the difference.

And now, someone explains me why this wise jedi left a 4 years old girl on a shitty planet to live by herself ?

A new part of the code too ?

Because Luke is obviously the one who made that decision, nope, no other storytelling possibilities for how Rey could have ended up on Jakku...

I suppose we'll now the reasons in Ep VIII. And he had no other choices than this one. It sounds wise and brilliant.

    Can't wait.

And how do you explain the symetry between the two opening scenes of Kylo Ren and Rey then ? You know the one coming from the light to dark and the girl coming from the empire's wreck to the light side ?

It's in the movie. Seems too big to not be intentionnal ? Why did they put those empire's ashes all around Rey and the dark scene for Kylo and the light one for Rey ?

I suppose your storytelling skills could explain what is going on there ?

Personally, I never liked the Old Jedi Order as portrayed in the prequels and, well, everything else.

In the absence of procreation, this is an organization that maintains itself by essentially stealing babies from their parents and raising them to think they shouldn't give a flick. Not cool. ;)

I mean, this sort of thing has happened throughout history, so I don't find it that far-fetched, but I find it amazing it hasn't been more controversial with people. I guess it's because it's not a well known piece of lore, and also because it's the old Jedi order. Luke obviously cared a good deal about his family, so much so that he defied Obi-Wan and chose death rather than killing his father, who was not the nicest guy in the galaxy at the time.

I would like nothing better than for Luke to form his own, non-baby-stealing Jedi Order, and he might as well change the marriage thing while he's at it.

Even if he didn't, though, as a Star Wars Fan/Trekkie, I would like to point out that the Jedi Code is something like the "Prime Directive": whether it is upheld or broken has more to do with the plot than anything else.

    ===================
Angry apprentice: "Grand Master Skywalker, you broke the code!"
    Luke: "I did."
Angry apprentice: "You're going to hell!"
Luke: "No. I'm actually turning into a force ghost. 'been training with force-ghost Yoda for years."
Angry apprentice: "You still broke the code!"
Luke:"I had a very good reason to do it."
    Angry apprentice:"What reason?"
    Luke:"Two words: Mara Jade."

None of that has anything to do with the possibility of Rey being a Skywalker. Nor does it have any bearing on whether or not Luke upheld the Jedi Order's views on love and chose to marry.

Whose to say if Luke had anything to do with Rey and Jakku? He might not even be her father and she is just a brilliant Force sensitive. Or, if he is her father, he might not even know that he has a child. Or that she is alive. Her mother might have left her there. Her adopted parents might have left her there. Her kidnappers. Kylo. Million possibilities not involving Luke whatsoever.

Colin Trevorrow has stated that Rey's lineage is satisfying from a story perspective. If she is from a random family, it's not very satisfying; at least not in my opinion.

Literally endless possibilities, but lots of people are having trouble even considering them.

I guess it comes down to this: some fans would prefer that Luke not be her father because he was not there for Rey when she was growing up. He could be excused for a million different reasons, not the least of which is not even knowing about her existence, but to a lot of fans the notion of Luke not having protected his child is unbearable, period - there is no excuse. Heck, lots of people have found the notion of Luke being in exile itself to be unbearable, and so they can't get into the new trilogy.

    While I don't share these feelings myself - I'm firmly in #TeamReySkywalker - I think I can understand.

It's like Kylo Ren losing his first duel with Rey. He just feels less threatening after the loss, even though we know that...

    1. He was severely wounded.
    2. He was not trying to kill her.
    3. He was so dominant at first that he could have killed her.

While you're thinking "he's obviously a threat, he's still much more powerful than Rey", you're kinda feeling "he lost anyway."

So, for lots of folks it's this: "He wasn't there for her, period." This doesn't sound like a good argument for expressing your hope that it's not the case, so other arguments are promptly brought up.

But make no mistake - that's what this is about, and why the debate won't die until Rey's lineage is revealed.
At that point, it'll turn into something else: whether it was a "profoundly satisfying" origin or not.

(Spoiler Alert: not everyone will like it, regardless of whose daughter she is!)

And that particular debate shall endure 'till the end of time. ;)

Happier prospects for Anakin, Padme and kids but probably no Han Solo in the life of Luke and Leia. Not interested lol.

I'm sure her undisclosed surname will be revealed by Luke in Episode 8, I saw the way he looked at her as if he knew her when she was younger.

That's something we can all agree on, there's simply no way to please everyone, especially when there are already a number of fans displeased with TFA to begin with.

I was just telling that to a friend who was saying that her biggest fear with the sequels was that, in order to get more money, they would end up ruining it all. (Just for the record, she is only aware of the OT/PT, not familiar with either the EU or the new canon). But my explanation was actually that, there is no way to please everyone. A bunch of folks hated the prequels because "they were nothing like the OT" and a bunch of folks hated TFA because "it was too much like the OT". So agree with you, there will be someone complaining about it.
