Luke's epiphany of Snoke.

I think the raw power that Luke is referring to is Ben Solo. Ben had a lot of raw power. Luke tried to teach him to control and use it, but he failed and Ben turned to the Dark Side and killed all of Luke's other followers. Now Luke sees that same kind of raw power in Rey. He is afraid to try to train Rey, because he is afraid he will fail again and she will fall to the Dark Side.

Also, I have yet to see anything that makes me believe Snoke is a powerful force user. We know that he is a force user, since he is training Kylo Ren and he reached out to him while still in the womb, but I haven't seen anything yet that tells me that Snoke is very powerful in the force.

 

I think there has to be something beyond just power that keeps Luke from going after Snoke. Something that keeps him from fighting and defeating him. Besides, Rian Johnson has repeated multiple times that the movie was going to be "different" and as the teaser says, about balance.

Luke is NOT a coward and his traveling to Ach - To is to study the force and find a better way to end all this constant warring. He did NOT run away.

My theory is that Snoke's death will be catastrophic for the galaxy unless certain things happen before because it will throw off the balance in the force. Maybe the galaxy only survived the death of Palpatine and the Sith because of Snoke's presence as a Dark Side user.

It's just my little pet theory.

 

I assumed that he was talking about Snoke as soon as I heard it. I hadn't even considered anyone else until I logged in here.

Vader

Snoke

Palps

Ben

Rey (in a vision?)

Luke's mate!

 

Or it's a power he discovered. We don't know what he's talking about really and if you watch the trailer when he's saying this he is going inside the force tree. So maybe the force tree has a power he's scared of.

 

Ben had training from both Luke and Snoke, yet was bested by Rey. Seriously? It has to be Rey and either Palps, Vadar or Snoke he is referring too. Just listen to the soaring operatic singing when Rey lights up the saber. Raw power confirmed Unless, of course, he means raw natural talent as an untrained nooblet....

 

Raw... Unlimited Power!!!

 

I know sometimes the trailer give us reason to wildly speculate, but it is almost certainly Ben he is talking about. I think there are questions to be answered regarding the fact that Luke did face off with two of the most powerful Sith ever, but by the time he faced them, their power wasn't raw, it was refined. It was great power, but still it was refined. Also in some of the metadata we have received (either by leaks or just promo material) Luke thought that Ben was the new Chosen One. What, but raw power would give him the indication that he was the chosen one?

Also recall Snoke's reaction when he learns that Rey had resisted Kylo. He was not at all expecting it and expresses a mix of surprise and disgust.

Ben is the other time that Luke felt raw power. This one isn't a mystery.

 

He can give you twelve breakdance lessons in less than one hour.

You were right when you thought it was about Ben.

When Luke faced the Emperor it was difficult and it cost him but after facing his father the first time I think he was hardly walking naïve at that point. However he assumed he could he could train his nephew he assumed that if he could find the good in Vader that the good in Ben would be easy to reach. He didn't fear Ben's power. Seeing Rey's power makes him afraid.

 

Judging by the trailer, my guess is... (then) Ben Solo ((now)Kylo Ren) cause at that particular moment in the trailer, we see Luke's robotic hand emerging from the ruins that might as well be his Jedi academy that his nephew and the KOR destroyed (again... if THAT'S true...) On the other hand... we'll know this December I guess.... Wondering is the only name of the game now...

 

In canon Luke has witnessed many powerful force users over his travels such as:

The Vampire Queen

Garro

And even learned of an ancient jedi consciousness called the Eternal Rur through Doctor Aphra...




Now I am mindful of the fact that the general audience would have no idea who these characters are and they are definitely not who Luke is referring to in the trailer, but they set the bench mark for the kind of power Luke has seen and not been afraid of.

We don't know the extent of Kylo's powers but we know he is strong in the force- using telekinesis to stop a blaster bold, mind shard on Poe.....and maybe, just maybe burning down Luke's new jedi temple. (we are assuming this)...but at the end of the day, Rey mentally bested him in the interrogation room and physically bested him in the forest fight (though he was badly injured, I admit).

Even with these powers, I don't think Ben's powers come close to Palpatine's, whether

- dueling multiple jedi masters with a lightsaber,
- convincing a powerful jedi master like Dooku to join him as an apprentice
- concealing himself and messing with the republic under the noses of the jedi including the likes of Yoda and Mace
- using force lightning as if it were nothing
- having vader live in fear of him for +20 years

Luke was almost cooked by Palpatine in ROTJ when he fearlessly faced him...if that isn't raw power, I don't know what is.



So my bet is on either Palpatine (since he is a character the audience would be familiar with) or Snoke (as a way to establish him as a super villain).

 

As much as I love to thread people's theories, all speculation is meaningless until we see the actual movie.

The RAW strength Luke is referring to could be so many different things, and every single one of them can be explained with a good theory.

 

And theories are meant to be discussed.

 

Of course, but that doesn't mean its not meaningless.
