Actually, it’s sort of different. When the Jedi believe that they “become one with the Force”, they are referring to becoming one with the Cosmic Force, and joining it permanently. Remember, they believe that there is no life after death: so becoming one with the Cosmic Force wouldn’t make them Force spirits. Ki-Adi Mundi said that “The dead are part of the Cosmic Force”, and Yoda responds to Serenity (the main Force Priestess) “This, I know” when told that “Life passes through the Living Force into the Cosmic Force, and becomes one with it.”

The Force Priestesses and Qui-Gon allude to Force spirits existing between the realms of the Cosmic and Living Force, and the former (specifically Serenity) goes on to confirm this: “We have achieved what you seek, and live between the realms.”

Actually, it’s much more specific than just being between ROTJ and TFA. On page 33:
It would seem that the destruction of Luke’s new Jedi Order caused it to become dormant, but I think that it’s much more likely that Snoke’s presence has something to do with it.

The Awakening in general seems to be what awoke it in Rey: she was likely attuned to the Force beforehand to some extent (her piloting skills, etc., like Luke) but something happening with the Cosmic Force likely awoke her raw potential.

    Thank you very much!

And whilst I’m working on other possibilities, yes: I think that the presence of Anakin’s Force spirit after the reawakening might have something to do with Kylo’s sudden pull towards the light. If I recall correctly, he says “I feel it again”, which many have taken as him constantly going back and forth between light and dark. However, given his worry about Snoke, I think that it’s the first time he might have felt the pull in years.

Whilst he goes on to ask Vader’s mask to show him the power of the Dark Side, we already know about how the Dark Side can attach itself to masks (Aftermath), and that Dark Side entities can exist despite the lack of the Cosmic or Living Force (i.e. Darth Bane on Moraband), so it’s possible that he could have been shown the power of Vader without the Cosmic Force’s and Living Force’s presence.

So if Force Ghosts exist between the Cosmic and Living Force would Luke be cut off from them if he was cut off from the cosmic force?

I can't believe I didn't think of that with Vader's helmet! Ugh! It could be a Sith artifact and could be communicating with Kylo/Ben in that way. Makes me wonder, what if when Ben found out he was Vader's grandson at the end of Bloodlines he sought out information on Vader, found the helmet and that sith specter of Vader was what led him to Snoke.

Because they dreamed it up in pre-production?

Disney also fired Michael Arndt after his proposed story ideas for TFA. I honestly think they tried a lot of stuff before landing on what we actually got to see.

Still I wonder if this was not a force ghost like we Obi-Wan and Yoda but having part of his dark side energy bound to his helmet like we see on the Clone Wars cartoon with Darth Bane.

That has always had me most curious was Luke's inaction. Because the Luke Skywalker that I know I could see him shying away if it meant he was coming up with a plan somewhere down the line. That said, my only fear of what TLJ will do with Luke is to turn him into Yoda 2.0. Basically, the "I'm not going to train you" and stay the cynic.

Don't get me wrong; I get why, but at the same time that is so much like ESB. Now, for granted; I am willing to trust Rian Johnson quite a bit with this dilemma. As in my view, he is an incredible screenwriter. But really my hope is that he snaps out of his cynicism quickly, either through Rey, himself or some combination.

I acknowledge the Luke that I am seeing isn't Legends Luke. As for his inaction; that I am most curious about. I'd hate if it was just Kylo Ren. Hence, why I suspect he discovers something on Ach-too; a big revelation one that shook him to his core. As for what, I suspect that it might have something to do with the Jedi or the Force. Perhaps, how the Force will always be locked into light side and dark side.

And that even if Luke defeats Snoke and Kylo; the cycle is still an endless one. Or perhaps the Jedi's doctrines were wrong/ misled. Hence, the "The Jedi must end" quote. Luke is saying this from a point of cynicism but also a bit of validity. Because to take a step back, light and darkness as a concept work off of one another. Both feed off of one another. As the light grows brighter so does darkness and as darkness grow darker, the light often shines brighter.

As for Luke's connection to Rey; I'm not sure. Judging from the material, it seems like he doesn't know who she is. But we'll need to wait and see. My hope, though is that Rian Johnson develops this relationship. Kind of like Miyagi and Daniel in that both grow stronger as a result of training together.

I am not to worried about TLJ being a rehash of ESB. I think that TFA needed to resemble ANH, to feel familiar to reaclimate the majority of audience members with the franchise. Most people don’t watch the movies over and over again, read all the books, comics and post in forums all the time.

Look at Rogue One, it was nothing like any Star Wars move. At first the heroes were doing bad things for good reasons, they realize they have to be better and sacrifice themselves for their cause.

I think people got to paranoid with TLJ, I think it’s going to be different and amazing. I’m so excited.

I will agree with you until a point. I didn't mind the homages until Starkiller base which for me that and the entire third act killed the movie. It's messy, too cluttered and has such a lack of tension. I can see why JJ Abrams wanted to push the movie back to January and personally I wished that KK agreed. I also didn't like the constant self-references and humor. It came off more as Spaceballs rather than a SWs movie. Even though, the OT had plenty of those moments. But it wasn't bragging. As for being paranoid, I think people are justified in being paranoid. For me personally, I know that RIan Johnson isn't stupid enough to copy ESB. He has way too much integrity going forward, having met the guy years ago. And while it is possible he could have changed, I still doubt he would do it.

Rogue One was a film that a genuinely liked. Not because it was different, but because it expanded the universe and gave a story set in the SWs mythos that while a prequel was different. I can appreciate Jyn and the rest of the characters a lot more, even if they could have been developed more. As that third act for me, made me appreciate them.

The movie also made ANH for me a lot stronger which I always saw as my least favorite of the OT. Either way, as I said; I am willing to trust Rian Johnson, but really given how this is the FIRST time we are seeing Luke Skywalker in a SWs film; I just want him to be treated well. Especially, given how Mark Hamill has improved significantly since SWs as an actor.

Starkiller base was the weakest aspect of TFA awakens. I actually refer to it as Mega Death Start 3.0. The rest I loved, but that's all just my opinion.

I agree 100% about rogue one making ANH better. I went home after seeing Rogue One and immediately watched ANH.

I so badly want Luke to be treated well. My biggest worry is that I have spent most of my life living in the universe in my imagination. Can anything they do really live up to that? I sure hope so.

Yeah, I think this is the reason they established it in the comics - to give precedence for sith artifacts having dark side spirits attached to them.
And I agree that it's probably something else than Force ghosts - Force Ghost are beings that retained their consciousness after becoming one with the Force, while these dark side spirits like Darth Bane in CW are, IMO, just some accumulated energy and emotion, an imprint of the artifact's user, far from a whole consciousness.

If I am right, it would make sense for Vader's helmet to have some remains of his energy still in it, even while he came back to the light and became a Force Ghost.

For people who did not read thread "Flux of the great Tide" I am just putting a note about new canon addition (novel "Legends of Luke Skywalker"), the knowledge about the Force Luke has acquired on the planet Lew'el.

This knoweldge putts accent on the trusting the will of the Force, in the other words Luke was probably gone in to isolation, after tragedy, waiting for the action of the Force itself, waiting for the next move of the Force.
