I believe I was referring to the trailer (not entirely sure as the post is a month old and I can barely remember yesterday). The trailer goes out of its way to not show us "Luke" or "Leia's" face. They are hiding them from view. SO, I was just having some fun speculating as to why that might be.

As to the shot within the movie. I suppose he could reveal himself shortly after. But I'd guess that is unlikely. The way it is staged feels like a silent scene. The slow movement of the arm, the camera angle purposely hiding the face form view. My original instinct, and I'm still feeling it, is that this is an out of context shot form the "force flashback" with Rose. My guess is that in the final film it will have some filters and processing attached to make it more dream like and it will all be part of the Luke goes into exile flashback story. Could be wrong, but that's what my gut is telling me.

    Exactly.
It's one backlot at a film studio in the real world, for sure. But two different environments in the movie universe. I don't know why people just aren't seeing that...

Luke's location is on Jakku near a cliff edge IMO he decided to set up camp & had a vision that caused him to touch Artoo.

What do people have against Jason Ward? I think I'm out of the loop.

No idea but definitely a funeral pyre. I think the rumours/leaks about flashbacks are true and in that scene he is burning the bodies of dead Padawans and other allies.

I don't want to bog this thread down with MSW debate so here's a short version.

    - Many people have issues with Jason for the tone he took here, other board, and with twitter against the posters. People were questioning his sources, which is their right. But he took it personally and lashed out against those questioning him, and by extension this site and anyone who posted here. He has also found to be complicit in some inter-site trolling attempts, which angered people a lot.
    - Other people just want to dislike MSW because they don't like the spoilers they are hearing.

But a lot of the time, people tend to conflate their dislike for the individual and the truthfulness of the spoilers he has. They should be judged equally critically, but separately of each other as one has no impact on the other.

I personally don't have anything against the person, unless there's shoddy journalism (if you can call it that) going on. As for his spoilers, only time will tell. I can separate the man from the rumors. If anything, it will prove that he had credible sources or an overactive imagination when it comes to interpreting those call-sheets.

after reading some of the pretty bad exchanges @Max Rebo highlighted and some of the duplicitous stuff done by certain "associates", i just put all the non-starwars stuff to one side and focus on the actual material SW7N/MSW/SWU put out. That has meant being called a "jason ward fanboy" because for some it's impossible to see that separation, but it is possible to do. I'd really like it if the personalities were put to one side. If people have issues with anyone on any of those sites then lets just focus on their content, not the person because it all just ends up in confusion/circular logic and never ending arguments.

but yeah, as Max has said, I don't want to bog this thread down with this stuff ;)

Its a flashback scene after the jedi academy killings. And Luke leaves to go into exile!

It strikes me as a personal moment for a fallen friend. Which I don't want to happen and hope it doesn't. And I don't subscribe to the flashback happening at all. I believe in the two sets, one location theory. And I believe it's Luke. Wouldn't it be great if it were kylo and he were mourning his nephew who he had to destroy when they were both under the spell of a dark side puppet master?! Episode VIII, on to uber!

I'm bumping this thread since the topic has come up recently in a couple other treads.

I have to say that while I do think that is Luke in the trailer, I find it hilarious how everyone is suddenly a CSI hand expert. I mean if you took a picture of 10 white guys individual hands, there is no way you could match most of them with their owners. That's just silly.

I am absolutely convinced there is a reason for Mark/Luke's voice being layered in that trailer. I noticed it on my first watch as I was listening with earbuds. Mark can sound almost exactly as he did 30 years ago if he wants to and he can sound much, much different. He's a vocal acrobat and him sounding so creepy in the new audio was done for some reason. I can't wait to find out.

The new stuff he recorded was only used for the echo effect. The rest sounds like the original because dialog because it is. ;)

have you guys considered the possibility that the suposed flashback scene is actually the scene of luke cremating han's dead body, in the third act of the movie, if the rumour about han's death is true?? we can see fire and a sad R2-D2....

I was thinking that for a while, my only gripes with it being Han is the fact that Luke is sat and hooded with nobody else around other than R2. The robe covering his face leads me to think this will be shown to us before our real introduction, hence the over exposure of the robotic hand to help us identify him as Luke. It's a hard one to call, for all we know he could be sat around a campfire with Padawan's opposite him, his solemn gesture being due to a badly cooked marshmellow! Either way it's all exciting stuff to speculate!

Just going from that behind the scenes picture of the same scene on the backlot in Pinewood, couldn't see other actors and the way the crew are stood and the position of cameras didn't leave much room for them. I mean, they could be at the other side of what's burning but from memory of the teaser, the other side looks to be some sort of rocky area. Just my two cents though, I think we'll all be surprised when it comes out!

Although this question can't be answered definitively based on the trailer and the picture of when it appears they were preparing for the scene it is a logical assumption regardless of any rumors or speculation because there is only Luke and R2 both times. Could there eventually more people in the scene? Yes. However, based on what we see it is more probable they are the only ones more so than others being in the scene.
