What a great way to conduct military training. It's a miracle that the Rebel Alliance won.

    'Give the kid a break!'

Luke's training is mostly about his karmic and yoga-based prowess gained from his lessons from Yoda in Empire.

Besides, the kid's got a lotta heart...

By "EMPIRE", Luke had been with the Rebel Alliance for three years. I'm still wondering why the Alliance had allowed him to participate in the Battle of Yavin, with no military training whatsoever.

Luke spent a lot of time piloting a Skyhopper, which is made by Income like the X-wing, and shares a similar cockpit and controls. Luke probably spent a couple hours in a simulator to get himself acclimated to the differences in the X-wing's controls, plus the latent Force powers, and he was good to go.

Well keep in mind; the kid unwittingly got into the Death Star undetected, impersonated a Stormtrooper, broke into the detention facility, broke a princess out, AND managed to successfully bust OUT of the DS with the/her booty and return her to the Rebels, on TOP of the fact that he can shoot as he blew at least two tie fighters out of the sky on his way out....so he can shoot....and Biggs called him an awesome pilot.....you're hired. 2+2=4......

Exactly, add all of that to the fact that the Alliance was desperate for pilots, and boom, easy to see how Luke was given an X-Wing.

He showed up with a lightsaber and saved Princess leia from the depths of the Death Star. They were going to let him fly, even if he didn't know how to put his helmet on.

And he had a lot of help. It's one thing to hire Luke. It's another not to train him in the skills of aerial combat.

What? Really? If that's how the Rebellion Alliance dealt with their pilots, it's a miracle that they won the damn war.

Right? It's shocking but they had the last of the living jedi so I'm pretty sure that must have helped...but also he rescued their PRINCESS so he seemed trustworthy.
    :p.

Yep it was on Biggs's word that he was as good as he said he was.

I keep reading these excuses on why Luke was allowed to participate in the Battle of Yavin with no military training and it's just not working. No one wants to question Lucas' decision on allowing this to happen? I guess people want to pretend that it's something not to wonder about.

Personal experience here. I've been massivly underqualified for many jobs I have done. And I blow up Death Stars all day! Seriously, Luke is not such a bad pilot, swamprats, T-16's. But he also mouths off to Han implying he knows something about hyperstellar navagation. Why else would he push for Old Ben to just get a ship of their own for that price? I think, like Rey, he spent his time on terra dreaming about ways to get away. And also working skills to that end.
