They didn't become 'jedi robes' until George went bananas and wrote the prequels. Up until then.. they were just normal attire for someone living on Tatooine.

The prequels actually managed to lessen the logic of the original trilogy, and made Obi Wan look stupid later on: "Why would he wear jedi robes if he was in hiding?" "Why doesn't he recognize R2?" "Why does he give Luke the lightsaber which killed the younglings?"

Ugh seeing all the Jedi in the temple walking around with the Jedi™ Approved™ Jedi™ Robes™ was so dumb... I still have flashbacks...

That being said, robes are an archetypal visual for a "wise hermit sage" type character. It works in regard to Obi-Wan in ANH and (hopefully) for Luke in TFA.

I was put off by Luke's appearance, too, but then I remembered that the prequels nearly ruined robes for me forever, I think they'll work in the context of old Luke. No one else seems to be wearing "the robes".

I'm not too disappointed with the bath robe Jedi uniform but if Finn or Rey end up wearing them later in the trilogy, I'll be highly disappointed

Not to mention how DUMB Lucas made Obi Wan look with the new "canon"

People ask questions like "Why didn't Obi Wan recognize R2?" "Why did Obi Wan dress like a Jedi if he was in hiding?" "How does Leia remember Padme?" "The original movies suck! The plot makes no sense!"

I'll tell ya why.... George Lucas snorted a mountain of space dust in the mid-eighties, forgot everything about the original trilogy.. then years later watched them ONCE before putting pen to paper. This is why The Phantom Mediocrity comes off as a bad acid trip

I'd like to clarify I don't have a problem with Luke's robes, I mean it doesn't break anything for me.. I just fear it will continue the Jedi Costume™ thing which in part turned Star Wars into a parody of itself.

Yeah this guy said it better.. I don't want to see Rey in these robes. A metal bikini maybe.. but not the robes.

a new book retconned that. Obi-Wan says to R2 off screen that it was good to see him again.

For everyone going on about the prequels inventing the whole jedi robe thing, I recommend watching Return of the Jedi, you know, the one that came before the prequel moves. I think that's Sebastian Shaw wearing one too. It's clearly a jedi robe and not desert attire. Lucas knew it was an official robe for the jedi, albeit with some modifications here and there for different folks, well before the prequels. Read Rinzler's book on the making of...there are even sketches there. Yoda is even wearing a jedi robe...before the prequels!

    This is a great post.

I think Luke will wear Jedi robes. Do I think he looks more cool in the black Jedi Tunic? Yes! However, he is the last remaining Jedi and he now most likely follows the JEDI order. I think, he will wear more traditional Jedi attire in this film.

True, and he never said he didn't recognize him, just that he never "owned" a droid. I assume the droids in the Jedi ships were on loan from the Republic.

Speaking of which, where did R2's body go when he was in the wing socket? He pops out of it completely intact in ROTS after we just spent ten minutes seeing just his head sticking out of the wing.

This is a great point. Though I still think the idea wasn't really in place when they made A New Hope, you are right regarding it being canon before the prequels came along. I take back some of my previous comments

I just want the Jedi characters to be more individual and charismatic in this trilogy compared to the prequels. I feel like the costumes play into that a bit.

I'd like Luke to be more than a stoic sage, and be a jedi master with a bit of personality/charisma like Yoda..

Well Luke went with black but he wore similar robs in ROTJ so I would not say that it was out of left field they robes were similar to Obi-wan's robes. Also I liked that the look of jedi was a mix of monastic traditions.

As for the look of Luke Skywalker if the white and light grey look is the real deal I think that makes a lot of sense. The use of the Black robes was in part a way to suggest unconsciously that Luke might go dark. When the time came near the end his shirt opened and the lighter color "on the inside" shown through. So to see Luke in the light robes I think makes a good bit of sense.

The need for him to look badass I would be rebuffed by Yoda, "Adventure, excitement a Jedi craves not these things."

I always thought the Jedi wore the simple attire of peasants kind of thing rather than having 'Jedi Robes'. Makes more sense in my head that way.

Well that was the point of brown robes that became a uniform so to speak in medieval Europe. There were pheasant garments but they all wore them.

I hated the standard-issue Jedi robes, too. Especially because a select few Jedi were allowed to wear pretty much anything they wanted to (e.g. Ahsoka, Luminara, Aayla) for no apparent reason.

So to be honest I can't say I was too excited to see Luke's look in TFA. Why would he bother wearing what is basically a uniform if he's living alone in a cave? Why not just chill in his boxers or a onesie or something?
