Luke's Return in IX Should Not Be a Secret But a Given

When Luke said, "See you around, kid," to Kylo in VIII, it almost seemed a given Luke would be in IX.

After Mark Hamill's recent "last to know" non-answer to a question as to whether he'd be back, this got me thinking.

I believe Luke's return should not be treated as a secret.

I believe it should be a given and confirmed immediately.

Luke was [ab]used as a so-called "MacGuffin" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacGuffin) enough in VII, and, after VIII, I'm sure many fans, myself included, would only look forward more to IX knowing Luke will return.

It would not even constitute a "spoiler."

The precedent has already been set with Obi-Wan Kenobi, departing in IV and returning in the next two.

So, I'd personally encourage LucasFilm to confirm this one fact ASAP.

Let the "New Hope" give us some "new hope" for IX, I say :)

I agree that there's no point making a secret out of it. I feel like it would be just annoying at this point.

I don't want them to show Force ghost Luke in trailers or images, but they shouldn't hide Mark's involvement and announce him along with the rest of the cast. Otherwise, there would be a full year of him avoiding questions and denying it...

But then there's the crowd that would take it as "OMG Luke's still alive!" so LFL might not want to stir that pot.

I really don't think it's their intention to make/keep it a secret. Why would they?

As you said, there's a precedent for it... the concept of a Force ghost already exists and has been established. It would be a wasted effort to keep hidden what so many are already expecting.

Plus, it's Mark Hamill! You want him involved in the promotion of the film!

My hope is that the role is so large that it would be impossible to keep it a secret.

I heartily endorse this event or product. :)

Ep9 has got an opportunity to show what lies beyond for the Jedi, and others, after death. If there was an opportunity to find out why back in ANH Ben said "If you strike me down, I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine", then it's with Episode 9.

Slightly alternative take, but I read a really interesting theory this morning.

Given Luke's purpose on Crait (to enrage and distract Kylo, thereby finally showing how anger truly is a weakness) we see this manifest in several ways- most notably his appearance (the same way he looked on the night of Kylo and Luke's misunderstanding) and his wielding of Anakin's saber.

"See you around, kid" doesn't particularly sound like something Luke would say. It does sound a lot like something Han would say.

It's possible Luke was parroting Han's last words to Ben Solo, before he left for Luke's academy.

Of course, even if this is the case, it could certainly be a double meaning. I expect, and hope, that Luke will return in some form in IX.

I know this is a bit wild, but I think it's going to stay a secret. Because he's not a force ghost. He's still alive and in physical form.

It will involve some clever continuity massaging, but I think it's a move they might make.

For as much as I'd also want Luke to still be alive (just like Han), I think we just need to accept that he isn't, at least in physical form.

Rey and Leia were both very specific about "Luke being gone", so I wouldn't bet that he's still alive. TLJ would also look weird and lose significance if that was the case. However, I admit that if he is alive than this would be a great surprise, and surely a very welcome one.

So, I guess we're left with force ghosts. And, how about flashbacks of Luke in IX? Could that work well enough? Perhaps we could know more about what happened between him and Kylo. And, perhaps know more about Luke's motives for going to the island, you know, besides wanting to die :)

I'm also of the opinion that if Luke does appear in IX, they should announce it as early as possible. Now they announced Billy Dee Williams, perhaps Hamill could be next. I'ts undeniable the gravitas that these familiar characters bring to the table. And if IX is to end the Skywalker saga, then I guess Luke should be there somehow.

Luke being brought back to the physical world would help a lot in bringing back the people who swore off the series after TLJ. Think Gandalf the White

But what's the difference between him being a force ghost or being alive? None. No, force ghost is even better because he can easily troll Kylo now.

I don't believe he can physically interact with Kylo Ren, thus he couldn't kill him...That said the rules of force ghosts aren't well defined.

Luke doesn't (and shouldn't) want to kill Kylo anyway. But I think he could interact with Kylo. Just look at Yoda in TLJ.

I think that's another reason why him being a force projection was such a good option, too.

He told Leia "I can't save him," and I think he meant that.

But by not being there in actuality, he also didn't have to kill him- and the non-violent resolution is ultimately a fundamental feature of Luke's morality.

It was a cop out. Could that ending have been more anti climactic?

M'kay, you're welcome to actually address what I actually wrote.

Otherwise, isn't your response kind of a copout to my comment?

I think when the actual cast list and filming has started announcement occurs they wont hide it.

It's like the Force at least in terms of canon. All we know is that the dark side is quicker to achieve power, and one can come back to the light; it's not a life sentence if you will.

Luke being in the film will not be a big surprise at this point and those who don't want to see that will likely still see the film and hand over that cash anyhow. Let it rip big time in the marketing of the film I say

I think they should announce Mark Hamill along with the rest of the cast. It is too big of a marketing deal not to do so. Plus, it just makes sense that Luke would be in IX. I think there are some good conversations to be had between him and Rey.

I have a hard time seeing Luke trolling Kylo, in the na-na-na-boo-boo sense. It just doesn't seem like something a Jedi would do. I could see Force Ghost Luke talking to Kylo, however, and trying to convince him to come back to the light. Although I think that if Kylo does come back to the light, it ultimately needs to be Rey who convinces him.

I guess it all depends on his apparent role in the film.

If his return is pretty early in the movie, then sure, they might as well announce it.

But if it's meant to be a big twist later in the film, I think I'd rather it be a surprise.
