    I saw the movie twice.
We are lead to believe that Luke is still the good Jedi we all love.
And I think he is good.
BUT there is something about that scene that makes me think about this twice: the music. Maybe I'm wrong, but some parts of it, mostly the part in which we finaly see his face, that remind me A LOT about the music in the final scenes of Ep III (i of course mean the "dark" music at the end of that movie.
During Luke's scene I was almost expecting to see a yellow-eyed Luke....
    What do you think?
Also his expression was not a happy one.... but maybe its because he's worried the same will happen with Ray, as with Ben Solo.....

Speculating on Luke's thoughts is something I will be obsessing with until Episode VIII tells us.

We won't know what his expression meant until episode 8. To me, it seemed like an overflow of emotion, so many at once that not one took precedent & expressed itself more than the others.

I believe he was so emotional because Rey is his daughter & he hasn't seen her in 15 years. I also believe his wife, Rey's mother, was killed directly prior to her being left on Jakku. So the combination of him seeing his daughter, remembering his wife, & seeing a human being for the first time in nearly 2 decades, must be overwhelming.

(Also, what the Blast does Luke eat/drink?)

I'll say this though. When Luke first turns around he looked sad and out of it. His eyes were glazed over and his general demeanor was quite pathetic. But then when he is seen for a second and final time, his head tilts down, his jaw clenches slightly and his eyes form a frown, indicating that he is back in the moment and is now more determined.

Do you think he was thinking "after all I faced, all I've overcome, everything I accomplished... Why do these lazy a$$ writers have me hiding out on this planet while my friend dies, my weak nephew wreaks havoc, and planets are destroyed???"

I think their is something poetic to be said about the time we first meet Rey, looking up into the sky, waiting for her family to return, and Luke staring out into the horizon of the ocean, the very same way he gazed into the sunset on Tatooine in ANH.
On Tatooine, he was gazing toward a bright future. On the mysterious island, I believe he was looking toward the past with a broken heart. And then he turns around finds Rey with his light saber extended toward, as though his strength and some kind of redemption has been found. Regarding Rey, I believe she has found exactly what she has been looking for.

That it would have been a good scene if Luke said something, anything just one word but he chose to remain silent, I wonder will he force grip the lightsaber from Rey or walk over & take it from her.

No, he has his own reasons for being out there and I can't wait to find out why.

There is something to be said about a king/warrior and his sword. A sword is always symbol of strength. Whatever happened to Luke in the past 30 years, must have cost him everything that he had. When Luke saw his light saber, it almost looked like something had awoken inside, just like the title of the movie suggests.
Remember Lord of the Rings: the Two Towers. Gandalf awakens the king out of his madness and hands him his sword to help him "wake" to remember who he was.

If I was in Luke's position having experienced everything he's gone through, I might feel that force sensitivity is a curse. Therefore, IF Rey ends up being his child, he might have wiped her mind and sent her away somewhere barren simply to protect her from ever having to be part of all this. So when he finally sees her, he is grieving that she is beginning a journey that has brought him so much pain in his life, yet at the same time he is reminded of his power and the responsibility that comes with it.

Yes losing his padawans was everything to him, like a second family, that loss would fill him with guilt to exile himself but now that Rey has found him, I wonder what will he do.

Reasons to hide that he has never, ever had before. Reasons to let planets be destroyed, Han die, and Ben Solo continue being bad.

    Okay,,,

The reason is.....JJ is not a good writer. Good producer, okay director, bad writer.

"He will remember and if he doesn't, those dirty lost boys will jog his memory. He'll crow. He'll fight. He'll fly.

    And then, he'll die.

    Ha ha! Ha ha! Oh-ah-ha-ha!"

He is in exile because of what happened to all his younglings and his own nephew being the cause and when Rey meets him he's just sensed the deaths of billions and the death of his best friend Han Solo.
I don't think he's in much if a happy place right now

Keep in mind, JJ had Kasdan helping him write this. I think the next episode is going to be dark, like ESB, and that while TFA was not very dark (excepting Han), it has set up the larger story.

My opinion is that Luke lost it, and channeled the Dark Side in his hopelessness and grief when his temple was destroyed and *that* is why he ran, and wouldn't come back. He's afraid it could happen again and he could hurt others. He's spent all this time trying to find his "balance".

I wonder if after 14 years of exile on his island, Luke may have gone a bit crazy (ala Ben Gunn) and started talking backwards like Yoda or something.... ;)

I also saw that he doesn't exactly looked happy especially after Rey showed him the saber. I am almost expecting Rian to go much darker than TFA for Epi 8.

See, I think this is the only remotely acceptable explanation.

I wish we could have seen Luke go ape sh!t in the wasted flashback.

I have a feeling they'll just go the guilt route, which is lame as anything.

I'm of the feeling that he is not willing to take the lightsaber from her at all.. that his expression is as if to say, "my dear girl, I'm so sorry but I cannot take that from you. It is yours now". If you watch Rey's expressions while she extends the saber to him, at first they are pleading "Please take this.. you're our only hope". And then her expression changes to acceptance.

I could be wrong but that's how I saw it. Very powerful scene :)
