Remember I was looking at it from the perspective of a potentially guilt-ridden Luke who blames himself for a) almost giving in to the Dark Side and kill his own father and b) that his father had to sacrifice himself to save Luke (thus, Luke blaming himself for being the cause of death).
You are of course right that technically Vader died because of the Emperor's stray lightning bolts (though he was already well beaten by Luke - so Luke could also blame himself for preparing the steak, so to speak). Strange though how little lightning Vader needs to die compared to Luke. I guess his suit made it more deadly? Or did him denouncing the Dark Side weaken him up?

Yeah I mean I could have completely misinterpreted it all these years but I assumed that the lightening destroyed his life support systems, thus Vader saying "it's too late for me now" or whatever when Luke worries about taking his helmet off.

But I feel like Luke had a lot of resolution at the end of ROTJ after redeeming his father and (in the Christian sense) saving his fathers souls of eternal damnation.

Oh yes, there's no doubt Luke's arc was done, but since we now have an actual Episode VII coming up, that arc must / should be continued, and that is why many think that one way of doing it, is to have Luke feel the aftermath. Not saying that's how it's gonna be, for all we know Luke was perfectly pleased with himself and started passing on what he had learned (to Leia) right after the party. Kind of like Leia shrugging off the destruction of Alderaan, there's no actual need for Luke to consider the moral implications of, say, killing the population of a moon-sized space station but I'd like it if Luke has become haunted by his past to the point that he considers remaining the last and only Jedi.

He wasn't exactly looking forward to it. He told obi wan he couldn't do it. But he had to face vader. That's how I saw it. How about you?

After Vader drops the emperor, the sound of his mechanical breathing had changed. The lighting clearly enveloped parts of his suit as he carried the emperor. We know that he needed the suit to breathe. It just always seemed like the obvious conclusion to me that it was the malfunction in his breathing apparatus that caused his death.

That being said, none of that would have gone down if Luke hadn't confronted him. And Luke did temporarily give into his anger and try to kill Vader before stopping himself. Luke may not have struck the death blow, but I can definitely see a scenario where he blames himself for his father's death.

If, however, he does blame himself so much that he has gone into exile, I don't want to see this occur in a storyline where he is also a great Jedi (moving mountains and what not). That obsessive attachment to his past deeds is very un-jedi like. If they go down that path, he should still be learning, not a true master. Unless they are going to the dark side with him...

I'm thinking he we be in self-imposed exile due to being hunted by the main villain of the movie. He will have minimal contact with the rest of the cast but the movie will open with Luke sending a hidden message to his friends to meet him, along with instructions on how to do so.

It would be very cool to see Luke pull down a Star Destroyer using the Force.

I don't like the Luke's been missing for years (would his friends really not search for him he about died saving them in Empire) idea just doesn't sound right Starwars is about patterns.

When I think about the plot for episode 7 I look at episode 4.

The hand floating in space thing might not be the intro.

What if the movie starts like 4 the Villain attacks a republic ship that has Luke on board
he has a saber fight losses his robotic hand and is taken prisoner
villains ship destroys republic ship sending Lukes saber gripped robot hand into space.

The defector storm trooper dude joins up with the good guys with info about were the bad guys are going because he saw Luke get taken.

Something I wrote for a possible intro taken from the "Plot of Episode VII" thread.

After the opening crawl, we would see a ship in space getting the crap blown out of it by a large upgraded Star Destroyr, referencing the beginning of A New Hope. Cut to inside the destroyer to show Isaac, in Mando gear minus the helmet, in command, the men at the consoles and whatnot are indeed Imperial officers. The ship outside begins to descend and crash lands on Tattooine. Isaac calls on the comm for Christie to take her squad down to the surface to search for survivors.
Christie, in Stormtrooper gear puts on her helmet and begins loading guns onto her person. John runs up to her in his Storm gear to give a report. He is her top recruit from the academy but she doubts his commitment to return the Empire to its former glory. They board a shuttle, similar to Shuttle Tyderium, and begin to head to Tattooine.
Cut to the desert, shot over the shoulder of an unknown individual. They have binoculars in hand and see the smoking husk of a destroyed spaceship. The person, shown to be Ridley, is riding on one of the creatures Anakin and friends rode into the podrace hanger in Ep I. She approaches the ship and begins investigating the debris.
Christie’s ship lands a little while after Ridley enters the ship. Daisy’s steed runs off frightened as the shuttle extends its landing gear. Christie sends her squad of five troopers into the broken ship. After searching they determine the ship was a diversion and that Skywalker had tricked them, again. She says the “emperor/count/whatever the main villain is” will be very displeased with them. She orders her men back to the shuttle but John is still looking around. He comes across Luke’s lightsaber and picks it up. At the same time Ridley finds him and attempts to hit him on the head to knock him out but he turns around just in time and catches her blow. After a small altercation, he falls and hits his head on the console, blacking out. Ridley drags him into a storage area, hidden from the rest of the ship and puts Luke’s saber in her bag.
Christie gets tired of waiting and begins searching for him. Unable to find him, she determines he deserted like she figured he would. The troopers place charges around the ship to blow it up. Christie and her troopers board their vessel and take off. Ridley throws John over her shoulder and uses the Force to help carry him out of the ship before it blows. The ships explosion knocks her on her face with John landing beside her. The blast wakes him up. He quickly searches for his blaster but discovers he lost it on the ship that just exploded. He removes his helmet and begins arguing with Ridley but he gives up as they are both out in the middle of the desert, a re-hash of the R2/3PO scene when they go separate ways back to civilization. Ridley eventually gets comm signal and calls her father, Han, to come pick her up.
Christie reports to Isaac and he is unhappy with her. Says something along the lines of when they chose him (a bounty hunter) to track down Luke Skywalker, he never thought he would be lead astray by a decoy ship.
Han and Chewie, in a ship that isn’t the Falcon (the Falcon is under repair at the new Rebel/Republic base on Dantooine) flies over John, stripped of his storm armor. He immediately turns around and begins running after to chase it. Han’s ship touches down where Ridley is and she begins to board the ship as John, unknowingly using the Force, reaches her and asks to come aboard. She allows him to. Ridley tells Han it was a decoy ship to lure the imperials off of Luke’s trail but she did find his old lightsaber aboard. Han suggests that Luke may have sealed a message in the saber hilt. Upon inspecting it, Ridley discovers a small data disc and puts it into the ship’s computer. A holo of Luke appears and greets Daisy, he knew by the will of the Force she would uncover his message. He is unkempt due to his self-imposed exile. He explains where he is and tells them how to find him. He also says the empire is getting closer to finding him and needs their help. Han reluctantly allows John to stay aboard with them. John figures out who Han is and praises his strategic ploys from Endor and some other battle that happened after RotJ. They enter hyperspace to head to base on Dantooine. After a long talk, John decides that he will join the Rebels/Republic but Daisy still doesn’t trust him.

Maybe he started feeling the pressures of the Dark Side and went into seclusion to not only help himself but protect the ones he cares about.

I believe Luke will be found on a small island in the middle of an ocean—it has a monastery where he can go and rethink his life.

    Speculation ;)
After the wars, Force users are blamed and held responsible.

Luke is the last Jedi and gets arrested by the newly formed Galactic Alliance.

He never resisted his arrest. But Leia manages to free him, he has to hide to protect her.

He lives in Exile, nobody knows where. Right until...
