    What I hope it is:
That the small group of young actors will be the focus going after or "on a quest" to find Luke Skywalker to aid what is now the Galatic Republic(led by Leia Solo, but not a queen or a chancellor).
Han Solo will either be "retired" or considered the "supreme commander"(like Ike in WWII) of all the military forces(ground & air). I think the RUMOR of Han & Chewie tooling about on a super star destroyer are true. Solo will either let the young actors take the Falcon on their mission or he will use it in the big 3rd act battle.
Luke may either be held captive(doubt it) or in exile(with JJ, that seems likely ;) ).
He may be the reluctant hero(like Gary Cooper in High Noon) or, dunt dunt dah.... do a climatic switch & reveal HE'S the real bad guy(like a clever Palpatine switch-a-roo).
This will expand the storyline into Ep VIII.
One or 2 MAIN CHARACTERS will bite it, to keep the audiences on their toes and I wouldn't doubt if the evil power will literally thrash the galaxy, destroying Corcusant & leaving a "scorched Earth" type ending.
Film critics & wags will compare it story-wise to TESB and it will get high praise.

The Sequel Trilogy is about Luke. George Lucas confirmed as much in the 80's. Just to deny it later.

"The other one ā€” what happens to Luke afterward ā€” is much more ethereal. I have a tiny notebook full of notes on that. If Iā€™m really ambitious, I could proceed to figure out what would have happened to Luke" (Lucas in 1980).

Luke would have a romantic relationship with a female love interest (Lucas in 1988).

And this from Gary Kurtz and Mark Hamil.

The focus would be on Luke Skywalker's journey to becoming the premier Jedi knight, with Luke's sister (who was not Leia) appearing in Episode VIII, and the first appearance of the Emperor, and Luke's ultimate confrontation with him, in Episode IX (a storyline as planned pre-1980, according to A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back producer Gary Kurtz).

In Episode IX, Hamill would cameo, "like Obi-Wan handing the lightsaber down to the next new hope" (according to Hamill, in 2004)

Obviously plans changed and Leia and Luke are related and the Emperor died. So maybe it's his final confrontation with Plagueis.

I believe that GL's plans changed while in production with the OT. There was suppose to be a 7,8,&9 and than a 10,11&12. The major Battle in ROTJ was suppose to be with Boba Fett leaving the battle with the Emperor for Episode 8. Because of problems in production and him family issues he decided while in production to condense the Films into a 4,5,&6 and leave it opened to come back to do the PT. Don't ask me to support this with a link because I don't remember where I got this info from, but this was the gist of what I heard.

Um either Lucas thought the ST would happen within 10 years of the OT or he was an idiot who thought anybody would like to see a movie filled with geriatrics and no young leads and actually make money.

    This as well ...

"It's like a saga, the story of a group of people, a family" (Lucas in 1980).

R2-D2 and C-3PO would be the only characters who might continue through all nine films (Lucas in 1980, 1981 and 1983).

There's also a LOT of information on Wookiepedia about Episode VII. Here is one interesting excerpt:

Lucas asked him to play Luke as an Obi-Wan type character who passes on the Excalibur to the next young hope in Episode IX, and that the sequels were to feature new characters with Hamill making a cameo in Episode IX. These sequels were to be made around 2011. In a 2004 interview, Hamill said: "You know, when I first did this, it was four trilogies. 12 movies! And out on the desert, any time between setups...lots of free time. And George was talking about this whole thing. I said, 'Why are you starting with IV, V and VI? It's crazy.' [Imitating Lucas grumble,] 'It's the most commercial section of the movie.' He said the first trilogy's darker, more serious. And the impression I got, he said, 'Um, how'd you like to be in Episode IX?' This is 1976. 'When is that going to be?' '2011.' I defy anyone to add 36 years to their lives and not be stunned. Even an eight year old is like, 'No, I'll never be 47.' So I did the math and figured out how old I'd be. I said, 'Well, what do you want me to do?' He said, 'You'll just be like a cameo. You'll be like Obi-Wan handing the lightsaber down to the next new hope." George Lucas has dismissed this as nothing more than an off-hand comment.

Prevailing thought is that Luke is a hermit wizard type. How does he get on this path? My opinion goes back to what yoda said in episodes 2 & 3. Everyone almost ignored his advice because the watcher believes Luke is doing the right thing by rushing off to save his friends. Yoda told him that he needed to complete his training. Even before Yoda trained him, he told Obi Wan that he was too old to train. Being a jedi is all about controlling your feelings. At Luke's age, he was too old to control his feelings. Hard to teach an old dog new tricks. By not completing his training, he was too undisciplined to control his emotions and be a jedi. Instead of turning to the dark side or hurting someone he loves with his power, he goes into hiding and becomes a powerful hermit deprived of social realities. I also believe they try and fail to convince him to join the good side at the end of this movie. He also went through alot in episodes 1-3. Hard to be a good person when you watch your foster parents, masters, friends, and father die.

There were definitely a lot of hints that Luke wasn't completely pure, he did have the capacity to go dark. I'd like to think he'll be more of a 'Dark Jedi' in the way that many are unsure of his allegiance, he's a tortured soul but regardless he'll always do the right thing and protect his friends.. Basically the Batman of the Star Wars universe.

Please don't let the 'one scene' rumor be true.. No matter how good the film is, not including Luke enough would be a massive flaw. He was the PROTAGONIST for the last three films in the canon, it only makes sense to have him be a main character.

Luke did things his own way. But he had a chance to be bad and turned it down because he knew there was good in his father. Luke is not bad in TFA just off the grid.

Lucas asked Hamill to reprise his Luke Skywalker role for 2011 back in the filming of the OT. He wasn't that far off. LOL

Yes. And told him he would be "passing the lightsaber down."

It was never going to be a film that starred people in their 60s and 70s.

Okay I'm responding to a few points made in this thread.

    1. Luke did not, nor does he blame himself for Vaders Death. Luke saved him! Saved him from darkness. Turned him to the light and his father is now one with the Force. Luke was joyful at the end of ROTJ. Happy he could see Anakin join Yoda and Obiwan. A great moment. I'm sure he communicated with him from time to time just as he did with Obiwan.

    2. The New republic or the Rebels or the Resistance would not be fearful of those with the force and want to jail them or hunt them. For over 1000 generations the Jedi order maintained peace. The few years the Sith had control would not rewrite history. Admiral Ackbar says "may the force be with you" during ROTJ. Many Rebels use MTFBWY throughout the movies. They would not turn their back on Jedi. Especially after the ONLY known Jedi blew up one Death Star and was responsible for the Death of the Emporer. No, they NEED Jedi.

    3. The idea that Luke was captured, escaped and is now in hiding and trying to somehow communicate to his friends through the force would be cool. Perhaps he reacquired his old light saber and now is using it to send a message across the galaxy. Or maybe Luke is so powerful now "the awakening" is Luke trying to send a message to all force users. They feel the tremor and it's what awakens the force in them. The question is who captured Luke and why couldn't luke defeat them.

If the Making Star Wars scoop is correct, and BB-8, R2-D2, and C-3PO crack a code that leads Rey to the planet Luke is hiding on, what planet would that be? Where has Luke been hiding all these years?

Thats a possibility. I think it will be a planet that we have heard of rather than a JJ original. Since Mark Hamill filmed on the island of Skellig Michael I was thinking maybe Mon Calamari.

Yes, i think that it will be a planet that we know or heard of, too. Mon Calamari would also be great! Or is it Moraband, because of the rumors of Luke guarding a sith tomb?

I would love it to be Moraband but I picture that planet being a dusty wasteland. The two most likely possibilities to me would be Mon Calamari and maybe Dagobah. If you look up the pictures of Skellig Michael it looks like nature made it specifically for a Star Wars movie. It's really otherworldly.

It's Alderaan! My wishes... :( RIP Alderaan. Would be incredibly awesome to see Moraband. Stated in another thread that it is my most need to see planet for the ST.

If Onderon's Sith History is canon, it could also be Dxun, with the Tomb of Freedon Nadd. Could connect with Skellig Michael in my opinion!
