Finn's story in The Last Jedi kind of took a back seat to what was happening with Luke/Rey/Kylo, but his character does grow a lot in the film. In The Force Awakens, Finn is ultimately all for himself until making a connection with Rey. He starts of TLJ in a similar position. He ends the film willing to sacrifice himself for the Resistance.

    So now what?

Rose has a huge crush on him, but I'm not sure it's reciprocated. With the Rebellion now underway Finn has to be considered one of the leaders. Where will he been when Episode IX rolls around. Finally, it seems like the "force sensitive Finn" theory is dead, but I wouldn't rule it out 100%.

    What do you all think?

I assume that unlike TLJ, where the Resistance was running from the FO.

In IX, the resistance will be going against the FO head on. I see Finn being a big part if not the main part in that.

    For his role?
If you look at TLJ, it was about the 4 main characters succeeding their predecessors.

Throughout the film, Leia was passing on knowledge to Poe so he could one day take over from her.

Obviously the same as with Rey and Luke.

Kylo and Finn are different. They both killed their mentors.

Kylo killed Snoke and took over his position by force. And he's now the Supreme Leader.

Finn killed Phasma. But we've yet to see how that effects whatever his new role is.

I would honestly like to see Finn really start to question his allegiance. Not turning back to the First Order, but more so growing and realizing that both sides are so heavily flawed. See him no longer fighting for a side, but fighting for a cause, a founder or cog in the new galactic governing body.

Finn's character has essentially been brainwashed since childhood, he has no sense of what is really going on. His character is the ideal vehicle for us, as the audience, to learn more about the state of politics in the galaxy and continue this narrative thread of the good, the bad, and the in between.

I always felt Finn was a JJ character, and I expect him to have a much bigger role in 9. He will probably be a leader in the Rebellion, if Poe is the new Leia, Finn might take Poes role

We know he did sanitation on StarKiller, sweeping Snoke's ship in ep VIII, can't wait to know where he was making the dishes in ep IX.

it would be neat if Finn turned out to be FS, but i feel that's a bit of a stretch.

i don't think Phasma died in TLJ; i fully expect her to return in 9. however, i agree with @LarsSkywalker that all the characters in TLJ were set up to succeed their superiors in one way or another.

i think the safe bet would be that he becomes something of a hero/leader for the Resistance/Rebellion, playing closely with Poe.

Finn might not be the only storm trooper less than enthusiastic about being taken from his family and raised as a killbot for some disembodied head’s dastardly plans. That was something from TFA that TLJ never had a chance to touch on. That would give him something to do. He can be storm trooper Moses.

Literally could go any direction since absolutely nothing's been set up. I would ignore anything out of Episode 8 and simply write whatever I wanted for Episode 9. I know he joins the Resistance in Episode 8, but I see no reason why he can't decide to break away and be establishing a Storm Trooper revolt independently in Episode 9. I also see no reason why he can't be FS, but instead of sending him down a Jedi Path, let's see how the GFFA looks with FS people using blasters as their primary weapons and who are in the profession of soldiers instead of peace keepers like Jedi. That way people afraid of Finn Rey don't have to worry about them being an item (as they'll go separate paths) but ultimately the revolt could help the resistance and create a 3 way conflict instead of a 2 way. Might be interesting to see how Finn and Poe's relationship is tested by Finn not being a part of the Resistance.

This will never happen of course, just an interesting angle they could take if they wanted. In reality he'll probably just become a Resistance Fighter and go on another mission, armed with knowledge of a FO installation from his time as a janitor. That seems to be the working formula for Finn thus far.

This touches on an idea out of The Last Jedi that I'm not sure JJ will follow up. There's an element of truth in Kylo Ren's "let the past die." idea. The Empire wasn't as big as the Republic and the New Republic isn't as big as the Empire. After decades of fighting the galaxy may have lost it's appetite for war. Keep in mind that before the Clone Wars there wasn't a centralized military. These wars only serve to make people rich. Finn sees this during his trip to Canto Bight with Rose.

It's time for the conflict to end once and for and for the Jedi to protect the galaxy again.

Before TLJ came out, Boyega did interviews where he said Finn could be a gunslinger-Boba Fett-type vibe.

So I think that's where the character is headed.

I don't see FS in his future at all.

Rey will teach him the ways of the Force and upon her death, he will be the one to head the new Jedi Order.

I've always suspected that Finn will help lead a FO revolt and that is how the "Imperial War Machine" will be defeated for good.

He will be a general....(pretty obvious the Resistance is at most 30 deep) I think and Finn, in particular in Episode 9 will be an opportunity to showcase the ground war
( done well in Rogue one) with Finn commanding ground troops and Poe commanding the air. Tag teaming leadership of the Resistance. Though Poe is Leia's sucessor ( overall commander) but Finn is THE field commander. My hope is he becomes a commando Jace Malcom style :

or even attaching his unknown back story to Mandalorians (give him some cool armor unique to him), widely featured in EU and Rebels tv show but not really introduced in the films but a large part of the Star Wars mythology they have an opportunity with Finn ( still a blank canvas...great job RJ...sarcasm implied).

I want Finn to get another lightsaber fight though. Doesn't have to be a rematch with Kylo ( a Knights of Ren will do) just a good fight that he doesn't end in a coma and I'll be good. Force sensitive...I can take or leave at this point as long as Finn can fight and is not a comic device and has a real purpose in the story ( the last Jedi I'm looking at you) Finn can be redeemed as the excellent character he started out as in TFA.

Finn will need to confront his past. Just like Kylo, just like Rey. Now that Finn has found his new belonging. First with Rey and now in extension with the resistance, Finn must now face that he was once one of the faceless agents of evil. Finn can only accept fully what he has become, when he finds out that there are others like him. He needs to understand what he was. Don't kill the past, but accept that it is part of who you are. Most probably, Finn will incite a strormtrooper rebellion, lead them into combat, free the slaves (the slave children) and decide the outcome of the war. In other words, they (the Resistance) are going to 'weaponize' Finn's knowledge in an effort to save the galaxy from First Order rule.

That would make Hux his antagonist.

I guess it depends on the status of the Resistance at the beginning of the film, but given how he's one of the few surviving member, I'd imagine he'd be a pretty big deal once/if they expand again.

I read somewhere that originally, after defeating Phasma, the stormtroopers present lay down their weapons and/ or join the resistance.
So your idea might be where Finn is going.

And don't forget, Hux did bitchslap Finn.

Exactly, they have been playing with the idea. The First Order officers are portrayed as 'not as obedient as they should be' for a reason.

As for the bitchslap, this reminded me so much of this:
