You do realize he would have died without Rey, Chewie, Leia, the Resistance.

People are so desperate for some strange reason to stop any criticism of Finn's handling that they've resorted to bringing out non-existent reasons as to why he's been written the way he has. Case in point, the argument that he's inept because he hasn't been in an actual battle before. There is not even a tiny hint that this is or should be a problem for Finn. This is just straight up excuse making for the writers. Nowhere in any if the movies or extended material (scarce as it is) is it ever said that Finn or any character for that matter has any difficulty translating skills from training to actual battle. When we talk about stormtroopers especially, this has never been a thing. So why are we offering this excuse to the writers of TFA and TLJ to mess over Finn?

I’ll admit I haven’t read every page of this thread, so sorry if I’m asking a repetitive question, but when was Finn shown to be “inept” in battle?

Dollars to donuts it's probably the whole lightsaber thing.
Ya know, him wielding a very powerful weapon the first time and not being aces at it considering he has no force ability.

You do realize there would be no Resistance if Finn didn't make the choice to help them. No character has given up more, and has given so little respect in return.
Look at the country we are in. Unfortunately that's all you need to know. Stories will always be predictable as long as the thinking behind it doesn't change. It seems to be hard for some to tell a story with a universal message. I think the OT had that, and that's why it resonated with so many people. However with each new trilogy, Star Wars becomes more exclusive, and the stories are getting smaller and smaller. Which makes no sense when it comes to space. There are more stars in our galaxy than there are grains of sand on a beach. A galaxy is HUGE. Force users wouldn't be as exclusive as it's being shown now, and there would be all kinds of skilled people throughout the galaxy. It's kind of sad they had to make a soldier weak, who had the most interesting and original story, in order for Rey and Kylo to stand out. And it won't work. It's the big pink elephant in the room. We know why it's happening, but we can't talk about it.

You mean the scene where he brings a sword to a gun fight and manages to not get instantly shot to death? Or the scene where he manages to hold his own against a way more skilled opponent?

    Great . . . now I want donuts. Thanks.

It's happening because Finn was always meant to be the sidekick. Can't have him upstage Kylo. Now Kylo and Rey will love and Finn will stand there with his mouth open.

I hate to be that guy but is anyone still optimistic at this point? Remember how Finn was going to be fine because Abrams was coming back and Finn was his guy? Remember how the "trio" all being together was supposed to all but guarantee Finn overall relevance? Whether you choose to write this off or not, between this and the covers it's not looking good folks.

I for one, never said everything was going to be fine because JJ was back.

I can't judge TROS because I haven't seen the movie yet obviously.

But this was the same guy who had Finn taken by Rathars, drink out of an animal trough, and put in a coma amongst other things.

A question for those who feel Finn is irrelevant. What needs to happen in TLJ for that to change?

Won’t let me edit for some reason. That should be what needs to happen in The Rise of Skywalker for that to change

No one wants to be thought of in a bad way. Even though we can do bad things. We want to pretend to be progressive in a country that's used separation as it's foundation to make itself wealthy, but no one wants to talk about that. When you live in a multi-cultural/multi-ethnic country, it's good business to push we are progressive. White men can be shown being intimate with all kinds of women, and it's considered progressive. However, white women aren't given the same freedom. Men don't risk their lives over a woman the way Finn did, and it not go any place. That's not how men work, but we have it here. White men are Star Wars largest fan base, so they have to be pleased, and Rey is a symbol white men have created for themselves. She is dealing with a problem white women have dealt with for a long time. Being placed on pedestals to show virtue, but ignoring their humanity in the process. Rey goes out of her way to help a man she saw kill his father and almost kill the only person to care enough about her to come back. What woman of any color would in her right mind do what Rey did?
