Oh, boy. That went a bit further than even i was expecting.

Well, firstly, let's leave race out of it. I think its been made pretty clear over the past year+ that we're done with that. If that's the only basis of any of your arguments, then you have no real argument.

What you're implying, that Finn saved Rey in order to "earn her favor" is so barbaric and inane and, in my opinion, contradicts half of the things you are enraged about in the first place. Needless to say, I don't think this could be any further from the truth.

I'm not even taking the bait on the rest of those race-driven claims. I figured you were heading down that path with your initial "pink elephant" statement, but this is just absurd.

Finn to get his own look and clothes (mission accomplished)

Finn to be apart of the films comic relief without being the butt of the jokes

Finn to win a fight against a worthy opponent ( read not a storm trooper) without it being luck but rather mostly skill and determination. The easiest way to display this would be a win over a KOR.

Finn's involvement actually being important to the outcome of the story. (hint this ocurred in TFA and did not in TLJ. Don't @ me If they left him in a coma and Rose repairing blast crying over her sister literally every meaningful thing in the story could've still happened)

Here are some bonuses that would also add to Finn's character but won't make or break his story at this point. At least 2 of the 3 above and I'll be alright.

    • He learns more about his origin than he was kidnapped as a baby (I'm not asking for his parents to show up but maybe the name of the planet he was stolen from
    • A signature weapon
    • A lightsaber redo (nothing as long as TFA just some light work where he handles business)
    • Poe taught him to pilot between movies and we see him in a starfighter
    • Some witty dialogue with Lando
    • Him having an opportunity to (slightly) engage Kylo Ren and wounding him somehow (I realize that fight is Rey's, but dude put him in a whole coma Finn shooting him in the arm in retaliation is more than fair)

Wish I shared your enthusiasm. You see him looking determined, I see him posing for a photo and not looking particularly determined or anything else. The description is he and Jannah are about to face mechanized units of the FO while riding the new alien horses. And I don't know... difficult to get excited about it.

I still have hope, but I have a bad feeling, Finn will forever be a sidekick. I hope I'm wrong, I hope JJ does something to develop his character arc this late in the game... I don't even believe what I'm saying...

Be careful of what you ask. I gave you the rated PG version. Let's get this real clear. I could care less how you see things. You aren't my barometer for anything. You would deny anything because you are in position to do so, but it doesn't make you right. You do what you typically do, and it's predictable. You are funny with your attempts at pretending to be enlightened when you are doing nothing more than hiding behind your own barbaric way of thinking.

Yeah it's too late now. All hopes were dashed in TLJ. He will remain Finn the Janitor forever.

A Calvary charge on (ostensibly) horseback up against mechanized forces has the feel of just one more instance of the "Rock Beats Laser" trope that has been done to death (especially in SW).

I don't think the character arc is all that important. He went from Stormtrooper to fugitive to Resistance fighter willing to die for a cause. I think we started seeing him mature as a leader at the end of TLJ, when he took charge. Now we just need him to do some cool heroic sh*t!

Just to remind some folks, Han Solo didn't do all that much after he was frozen in ESB. He would not have befriended the Ewoks. He was clumsy attacking a Biker Scout. His big moment was coming up with the idea to impersonate an AT-ST driver to get them to open the back door. So let's not nitpick how Finn gets his victories.

The more I read the spoilers, the more I think we are getting a lot of ROTJ tropes. JJ just can't break free! If Kylo sacrifices himself to kill Palpatine and is redeemed at the same time, then this entire story was a waste.

That picture from VF of him and Jannah on the alien horses got me more excited than any of the other photos. I love Finn, he's a supporting main character, much like Han was honestly, and he's always been a good guy and fun. John Boyega as an actor and personality on the press tours is such a joy as well.

I still can't believe how some compare Han Solo, the coolest space pirate of all time, to goofy Finn. I just don't get it. Would Han Solo drink from the trough? Would a director instruct Mr. Ford, you're thirsty drink from that ghastly pool of slop that the animal is drinking from?

From the moment we meet Han in Chalmun's Cantina, he exudes coolness. a no nonsense, seasoned pirate, who's all about making money to pay off his debts.

From the moment we meet Finn, he is unsure of himself. He wants to do good, so he helps Poe escape, yet he is talking to himself to boost his self confidence.

I would compare Finn to Luke Skywalker because Luke was kind of awkward in the beginning, or i would go so far as to compare Finn to Jar Jar because of his goofy antics. Falling off the bed in the beginning of TLJ, to get laughs, when the last time we saw Finn, Kylo Ren puts him in a coma... oy vey.

Han Solo has been depicted as the epitome of cool especially in tESB. How on earth, does someone compare Han to Finn. I must be from another universe.

In the Solo film, a young Han exudes cool. He wants to be a pilot, and even when he fails he still exudes cool.

Finn has been depicted as nothing but a clown. During his Canto arc with Rose he tries to play a bit of a serious role, but nonetheless even Rose calls him a dummy when she save him...

its so true, thanks brother for articulating something that has bothered me since the inception of Reylo... Finn risks his life to recuse Rey and when Chewie explains to Rey it was Finn's idea she hugs him... Rey wears Finn's jacket... she sheds a tear for him when Kylo cuts him down... yet she falls for the evil Kylo Ren... OY VEY.

You're comparing personalities. I'm comparing their role as secondary hero to the main hero. They can only be so heroic and not upstage the main hero.

Look, it's clear many of you wanted Finn to be Lando 2.0. Personally, I'm glad we got a character that has heart, humor, and room to grow.
    --- Double Post Merged, May 29, 2019, Original Post Date: May 29, 2019 ---
She didn't fall for him. She has a connection to him and a sympathy for him. They are flip sides of the same coin. OY VEY, you folks really reach hard in finding things you hate about Finn's character.

What about Rose? She fell for Finn but he doesn't seem to feel the same way. Can you believe she risked her life to save him and he barely acknowledged her kiss? What a jerk!

There's a stark difference between "upstaging the main hero" and being treated with respect. So, you're saying that having Finn be treated with a modicum decency would somehow take something away from the other characters.

Finn NOT drinking out of a trough like an animal would somehow upstage Rey?

Finn NOT having his backstory made into a joke would upstage Rey?

Finn NOT being tazzed over and over again throughout the series would upstage Rey?

Finn NOT waking up at the beginning of TLJ and looking like a fool would upstage Rey?

I'm sorry, I'm not following your logic here.

Finn drinking out of a trough because he just survived a ship crashing and a long walk through the desert makes him a joke?

Finn's backstory isn't a joke either, there are over 7000 sanitation workers in the state of NY. The military typically makes all new recruits work sanitation, kitchen, etc. That's the beauty of his story. He worked in sanitation on the largest weapon ever created and used his knowledge to bring it down.

Finn wasn't tazed over and over again. BB-8 got him because he thought he was a thief. Rose got him because she thought he was a deserter. Not seeing a point to this.

Finn waking up disoriented was funny. He's a funny guy. WTF is wrong with that?

For the vocal super minority that hate Finn's character, why not just stop watching and talking about it?

All of that could've been avoided if the writers wanted to do so. They could've had Finn wake up in TLJ and be treated with respect. They could've written a scene where Finn gets hydrated that doesn't also work to dehumanize him.

Basically what you're post boils down to is, Finn doesn't deserve to be treated with respect. That's a strange thing to say about a character you claim to like.

I mean the callback to Palpatine alone would suggest that there will be some mirroring of TROS and ROTJ. And while I know this opinion isn't popular, I find it difficult to believe that Kylo will survive this Episode with LFL insisting that this is the end of the Skywalker saga. And I doubt they'll kill him off without a redemptive arc, so... there's that.

I do think Finn's character arc is really important (and what I perceive to be a lack of attention to developing it in a meaningful way has harmed the character overall). I hope it's due to him not being planned out rather than apathy. A lot of characters with potential were wasted in this trilogy.

I honestly think there are just too many characters in this trilogy. There is a constant pull between legacy cast and new cast. There simply isn't enough time to explore them. In the OT, Darth Vader was pretty one dimensional and didn't require an "arc" so to speak. But Kylo Ren does.

Personally, I feel it would have been better if Finn and Poe were merged into one character. He could have been a Tie Fighter pilot that defected or something. Rey and Finn along with Kylo could have easily been enough. While I like Oscar, his character just isn't interesting to me. They could have used legacy cast or a Wedge-type character to fill in the smaller parts. I really don't think there is a concerted effort to make Finn an afterthought. It's just the nature of the story and the choices JJ made for TFA.
