Augustman - JOHN BOYEGA: THE RISING STAR FROM THE STAR WARS FRANCHISE (PART I)

John Boyega: "Ah man, you’re [asking questions and] talking to the person that has struggled over the years with all these secrets and stuff. It’s important to me not to reveal anything because the shock value is so important for this one." "[Star Wars: The Last Jedi]…it split the fans, yeah." "Yeah, [J. J. Abrams being back] is good, but I also feel that with this movie, you’ll understand why there was such an about-turn in [Star Wars: The Last Jedi]. Sometimes, life gets in the way, and I think that was just what happened to the characters, what with them splitting apart, suffering, and having so little hope of winning. I think that’s good, because the next movie wraps things up in a way that makes sense of all that."

Boyega with some quotes from the new EW piece.
I understand Boyega's frustration with his part in The Last Jedi. Luke having such a big part meant the central 3 got less time that I would have liked. I still think Han Solo got too much time in TFA. That time should have been dedicated to Luke, but alas.

I can't wait to see all three of them together in this film.

Nice poster but can we get my man a weapon? Stuff is dangerous, there's a war going on!

So I looked at the new footage on GMA of the chase scene and again I noticed.....

Poe driving the speeder, the droids riding, Chewbacca shooting at the troopers, Rey shooting at the troopers. Finn is there....just there. I asked this earlier where is his weapon???

Right now this is just an observation (not a complaint) but all the Finn footage has been action without any actual action (fighting I mean) Finn riding a space horse on a star destroyer, Finn with his outstretched arm to catch Rey as she jumps from a star destroyer to the Millennium Falcon, Finn riding a speeder (and not shooting) Finn running down a hallway with Poe and Chewbacca ( and them shooting people and him not shooting people) So it makes me wonder if they are keeping footage of Finn fighting out of the trailers ( and Finn better be fighting somebody dammit! There's a war going on!) So what does everybody think? Is there an epic (ok not epic but interesting because he is fighting an interesting opponent such as a : KOR, short Kylo rematch, Sith trooper?) fight sequence hopefully with a new gun, lightsaber, or Vibrosword being withheld from the marketing?

Why are we not deliberately seeing Finn fighting or even with a weapon in marketing? Thoughts?

I watched again and I thought he points his blaster at the jet-pack troopers right at the end. But it is interesting that he doesn't have a weapon on his character poster. He is however shown with the blaster rifle he got from Han on the Orbak and the standard Resistance blaster on his hip which he's shown pointing and shooting on one of the posters and one of the stills and he's also briefly shown with Rey's staff. It's interesting also that when he and Jannah are shown on the wreckage he no longer has the blaster rifle. Anyway I don't want to read too much into this and I'm just going to hope to be pleasantly surprised. It doesn't look likely so far but I'm hoping he has another melee fight which he handily wins this time.

My hopes and tempered expectations mirror yours. As the Mandalorian has already shown and the KOR presentation teases. There are plenty of melee fighting opportunities in a GFFA that do not involve light sabers.

Yeah but it would have been really cool to see him wield a lightsaber again. With Daisy's comments about her and Adams improvement, I think that's completely off the table for Finn, sadly. They didn't just promote him with it in TFA, the novelization takes the time to frame him receiving it as a significant moment for him. Then for them to just take it away and act like it never happened, it still has me somewhat miffed. Oh well, whatever they do with Finn they're going to have to really sell it for me because just shooting blasters is not good enough.

What would really mess this movie up for me is for Kylo to get a redemption and end up with Rey facing down Palpatine at the end when that should be Finn. Maybe I would still check out the Mandalorian and that would only be because it's a series and I started watching from the beginning. But other than that I would be pretty much done with Star Wars for a long time. Yep, it would make me that upset.

Not to get your hopes up but their is an older rumor that never got debunked or confirmed by the spoiler crowd that was floated by one of the more "reliable" leakers.
There was a zero gravity fight sequence teased early on in production that several leakers mentioned. One of the last times it was discussed the leaker thought it actually did not involve Rey, but Finn or it involved Rey and Finn working together. Its never been debunked people just stopped talking about it. Maybe Finn fights some Sith troopers in zero gravity?[/SPOILER. As always temper your expectations but of there is a surprise Finn fight sequence it might be something along those lines.

The likelihood is that it is Sith Troopers that Finn clashes with, and my guess is, like every other Storm Trooper flavor that's come out, it's really still just the standard Storm Trooper with a little razzle dazzle. I don't expect them to be formidable, just red. That probably doesn't lend him an opportunity to do any melee fighting.

However, if he does get involved in melee, I'm guessing it'll be some type of group melee. I don't anticipate you're going to see him scoring 1 on 1 melee victories on his own, it will probably always be within a group setting.

Daisy Ridley: "I think the core of the whole thing is I guess like challenging your identity and what it is that you think makes you you and the things that people think they have bestowed upon a certain person or whatever it is - is challenging what other people [are] telling you you are. Yeah."

John Boyega: "For me it's loyalty and the inner struggle, darkness and light, good decisions, bad decisions, family, love...but it's a space opera at the end of the day. It has all these things in there but it's coded in just an epic story. And it's gonna be fun (gestures)."

John Boyega: "I actually don't know [how Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker ends]. Because we shot several different things, we had reshoots, J. J. [Abrams] added some changes so I'm curious. I think I watch the movie next week [for the first time]. Yeah." (archive)

John Boyega: "Yeah [it was me that left the script under the bed.] It was an accident." "[J. J. Abrams] is definitely upset. 'Get over it' [I say]. (laughs) What I thought would be good is if people get to read the film before they see it. It's a whole new creative thing I've got going on." "[Publicity stunt?] That's what I think." "I love 'Baby Yoda' [from The Mandalorian]. [I choose] 'Baby Yoda' [over Porgs], man." (November 27, 2019)
