In this arena, you will keep it from being your fault...so don't do it.

He's in it. That's about it.

Not much in the trailer that provides any fodder for speculation.

I have a feeling TROS is going to be a structural mirror of ROTJ. With that said, Rey will have Luke screen time, Poe will have Han screen time and Finn will have Leia screen time. Luke will be relegated to a Yoda/Obi-Wan scene, explaining stuff to move the narrative.

With that said, Finn has a chance to be a big part of any ground battle. Poe, Rey and Finn will start out together and get separated about midway through the film, giving Poe and Finn plenty of buddy comedy scenes. I also doubt we will hear any Finn janitor jokes. He will be much more serious a foe and probably kill a KOR or two. Here's hoping!

I think JJ may decide to take the road less traveled in terms of screen time (i.e. it's not how much you get, it's what you do with it). I do agree that Luke most likely is a Force Ghost, and that Finn and Poe probably do separate from Rey, not so much because of their chemistry (there is some, but they didn't spend a heck of a time together in TFA) but because Rey will be involved in a Force plot and there will be no place for them in it.

If there is a ground battle I suspect they'll all be in it. I'll only bet against the janitor joke this time because they appear to be returning to one of the destroyed DS and where Finn has no tailor made insights of the operations (since he was a part of the FO, not the Empire, he will be as ignorant as everyone else).

We'll see if JJ makes the effort to make Finn a credible foe. He has lost every head to head match up he's had (TR-8R, Kylo, Phasma) if he suddenly starts "bodying" KoR without further explanation it will come off as fan service. I'm not saying he has to have the Rocky on the mountain top training montage, but it would probably makes sense to at least allude to Finn honing some combat training. We've seen his body of work up to this point, it's reasonable to assume that at the end of TLJ, he is not prepared to face and defeat a KoR. He has to level up.

Finn is missing one big and major thing for the hero's journey "Meeting the Mentor" Rey had Luke skywalker in 8 and Maz Kanata in 7. This is something that Finn does not have that is clearly his mentor. Rose in 8 was suppose to be a mentor , but in reality she was no body special .

Part of the hero's journey is meeting the mentor .Once the hero has committed to the quest, consciously or unconsciously, his guide and magical helper appears or becomes known. More often than not, this supernatural mentor will present the hero with one or more talismans or artifacts that will aid him later in his quest. Meeting the person that can help them in their journey. Finn lacks this in 7 and 8, will we see it in 9 is the big question? This mentor might be Rey or Jannah or could be someone else new. I thinking Rey because Finn was holding her staff in the trailer which could mean something. It could also mean Finn and Poe gets separated from Rey and Finn finds her staff but does not find her, because she off doing Force stuff. Finn's costume is between Han and Lando costume in ROTJ. So it appears he just a side character for 9, and the new villain and the Knights of Ren, and the other new characters will be getting most of the screen time, and story line into the plot of the movie and Finn is just a tag along. Or part of the resistance fighting scenes.

There is a new Star Wars channel that one of the host is a big Finn fan, and he was the person talking to John Boyega about Finn using the lightsaber in 9 and John respond in vague answer that did not answer his question. But this host said on his channel which he owns a comic book store in Philly, that Finn at the end of this year is coming out with his own comic book. Which can mean a lot about explaining his story or even force senstive without seeing it explained on screen. I believe deeply that KK doesn't want any other force users on the light side with Rey that is a male because it takes the spot light away from her . Just look how they did Mark Hamil and down played him for 7 and 8 with no real fighting scenes or screen time in 7. The defeating of Kylo Ren in 7. I believe Finn character was held back so he does not take the spot light off Rey as the main hero, this is why we seen a weaker Finn in 8 along with a weaker version of Luke in 8. Finn having his own comic book might be the way Lucasfilm want to shed light on Finn more and if he is Force Sensitive it can be in comic books and not on screen with Rey taking the spot light off her.

I think the Finn comic is just the Age of Resistance comic book onehsot .

All main characters across the eras are getting one. Finn's is about when he was stationed on Starkiller. So it's nothing new.

As part of his hero's journey,
Finn got three "talismans" from "mentors" in TFA, and they turned out to be nothing special for him.

Han giving him his blaster. Which he never really used and later lost. And was treated with less significance than when Han gave Rey hers. Which she still has it.

Maz giving Finn the lightsaber. Which meta wise, was a bait-and -switch. In universe wise, it was just to get it to its true owner Rey.

When Poe said Finn could keep the Resistance jacket. It's just a jacket. It's SUPPOSE to symbolize Finn being on th Resistance side. Big whoop. It's also the only thing that Finn keeps from TFA, into TLJ. But of course, Finn discards it on the Supremacy.

Even Rose still has her necklace which symbolizes her bond with her sister.

In Rise of the Skywalker, it appears Finn still has jack $@&%#. Besides getting a standard Resistance blasted (that Poe and others also possess). And he carries Rey's staff for her, like a purse, when she's too busy.

He's just gonna be the brave Resistance fighter. That's it. Doesn't even have his own name or his own jacket. Embarrassing.

Really? He lost to Phasma? It seems that Finn can only win if he goes Rambo on someone, burns them and then pisses on their graves for good measure.

And why would fighting KOR be a stretch? Or a demonstration of Finn's strength or 'worthiness'? What did KOR do to make them all that imposing or credible foe for Finn? Pose in a single TFA scene and seemingly massacre a village? I mean, FO did that too in The Force Awakens. Being made fun of by Snoke? Looking cool?

Finn completed the first part of his arc in TLJ. And no, there were no two same arcs - one in TFA, one in TLJ - movies are literally a day apart if even that, so it was always one arc, that started by abandoning the FO and ended with 'Rebel Scum' (Poe didn't even have an arc in TFA, it was entirely crammed in TLJ). And he ended it in a place of personal clarity, knowing his place in the world or, better said, knowing what place he wants in the world.

Does he have to level up? All our heroes have to level up in IX, and that's even without counting Palpatine. I think the time jump will serve that purpose. They will all begin the film 'leveled up', but Palpatine (in one form or another) will challenge that. And then they will all have to come together to defeat the final boss.

What J.J. needs to do with Finn is show what makes him special. His heart? His bravery? His skill (he is military trained)? Is he a warrior? A strategist? Vanguard or bridgeburner? Something else? What is Finn now, when he accepted his part in the galaxy?

These threads have ignored what makes Finn special from the beginning. He was “programmed” from birth to be a heartless, weak minded drone. Fodder for an army that defeats their enemies with overwhelming numbers. A glorified clone. Finn resisted that programming. He beat their system. He’s special because he has a conscience. He has a heart. He feels. He has never been given the chance to hone any skill other than what he was raised to do, yet he’s taken what they did teach him (Yes, even being in sanitation) and used it against them. Now that his shackles are off, let’s see how he grows. Remember the last two films took place in the span of a few days. Now we have a year or so time jump. I’m sure he’ll have his moment. For those that think he should have been Rambo right after he defected, that wouldn’t make sense since we’ve never seen a Rambo like Stormtrooper. Hell most of them can be mind tricked. Not Finn.

Sometimes what bothers me about this character is that we just can't have an honest discussion about Finn. You can't provide honest and substantiated critique without it being countered with hyperbole. I'm trying to make the case for how you ensure continuity based on in-film elements and your response to suggest that we just want Finn to go Rambo, burn people, and/or piss on their grave. Seriously.

"He has lost every head to head match up he's had (TR-8R, Kylo, Phasma)". This is a statement of fact; literally in the film. In each instance, they engage in combat, and he is bested. But the point of bringing it up is that there is nothing to draw from in the previous Episodes to suggest to you it would be realistic for him to defeat a KoR. If they plan to have him defeat someone who travels with Kylo and is considered a "Knight" they'll need to provide some element to explain why now it's possible.

Actually there has been an argument made that the existence of a "Reconditioning" Department in the First Order (mentioned in TFA) suggests that Finn is not special for having resisted programming, and that it happens often enough to have a department to deal with it.

People who believed Finn would be a special soldier from defection relied on supplemental materials that suggested he should be special. This information however (I would argue) does not make it's way into the on-screen presentation. I say all this to say, I don't think people who were looking for Finn to be special in some way from the outset arrived their exclusively via head canon. I believe the seeds for such thoughts were planted in the "BTA" book.

Obviously, you and I see 'facts' differently. Finn wasn't bested by Phasma. Finn won. It might not be overwhelming, 'Hulk smash' win, but it was a win. What do we have to honestly talk about if you don't recognize/accept that? I can only conclude that Finn and his win are somehow insufficient, hence maybe Rambo-type character would be.

You could actually conclude that Finn not winning any melee through the application skill is a problem (especially if you anticipate in TROS, that he might be shown winning against skilled components when his resume lacks any evidence that he is capable of doing so based on his skill). You could conclude that.

Going on 4 years now I have watched people try to side step legitimate critique of Finn's combat skills, by focusing on the end result, and not the context on how they got there. (i.e. Phasma is dead so Finn won). Of course from this perspective, Finn is actually undefeated. He went head to head with TR-8R and in the end, TR-8R died, so Finn won right? And he went head to head with Kylo and wounded him, and since the movie ended with Kylo unable to fight anymore, Finn won right? Because the end result is what matters, not how we arrived at the end result and not Finn's actual actions.

These machinations are, for whatever reason, not necessary for wins for other characters. And they don't even have to go Rambo, burn people and piss on their graves to do it. When Rey defeats the gang on Jakku, she didn't use a LS or the Force. She doesn't require serendipity to save her, no one steps in on her behalf, she doesn't require for her opponent to let down their guard; she just applies skill and wins. It's an unfair observation to note that Finn never has? If I suggest he needs to be imbued with some training I'm actually lobbying for him to be Rambo?

I think the reconditioning could be a pretty broad department so to speak. It could be for soliders that fail to follow orders without question. Or for soldiers that aren't up to par from a skill stand point. It doesn't suggest to me that there were others that defected or grew a conscience. I would imagine from a plot stand point they needed a way to deal with him, thus reconditioning. I doubt JJ and Kasdan were thinking about other "Finns". The whole point is he is unique.

I'll just say this. "Special" is a point of view. Finn was heroic in his defection. Heroic in his willingness to fight for someone other than himself (Rey) and basically fight a much stronger opponent with a weapon he never weilded. Heroic in his eventual willingness to die for a cause.

The books and supplemental stuff prior to a film, especially the young adult novels, always build things up more than the films. It's the only way to reach their target audience. I don't think any of the books suggested he was Captain America, but I could be wrong. I do agree the TFA marketing (trailer, poster) had everyone believing he was force sensitive and that was a major blunder.

As it should be, since she is the protagonist of the ST.

Mmmm no. Finn is not a force user, because Rey is the light side force user of this story and she has the limelight because she is the protagonist.

I also find interesting this obsession with Finn not having a weapon... Pretty Freudian if you ask me.
