I figured since Palpatine is in Episode IX in some kind of way then he should have his own thread.

I don't think he will be in it in the way we might expect though. In fact there are many ways he could be.

What do you think his role and capacity will be? Speculate away.

    He could appear as:

    - Flashback
    - Holocron
    - Forceghost (something new for a sith)
    - Clone
    - Didn't die in ROTJ
    - Only his voice

If I had to choose...flashback scene or a forceghost to Kylo.

Many believe that Palpatine created Anakin, and thus the entire Skywalker line.

This movie wraps the saga up, beginning to end. If Palps really was the beginning, he's almost required to play a role in the end. Symmetry, rhyme, whatever you wanna call it, Star Wars is loaded with it.

How will it happen? No clue. But I think we'll all learn something unexpected about the Force by the time this one's over.

At this point I am not sure how he is going to be portrayed in TROS. If executed well it should be fantastic. However, there is a chance for it to be bad if not done well. I trust JJ to pull it off. Boyega in an interview stated that he questioned Palpatine coming back and had a sit down with JJ to discuss it. Boyega seemed to like the idea and how it turned out so hopefully that is a good sign

I think it's likely he'll appear in a psychical form, either hologram/holocron, ghost/spirit thing or in the flesh. I doubt the Emperor would have much to do in the story if he was just a voice that was in a handful of scenes.
Likewise, JJ said he was surprised the news of McDiarmid being involved wasn't leaked.

I wonder if Matt Smith is gonna play a clone or younger self in a flash back?

I mean we literally know NOTHING about who he is playing

    Also, outlandish theory here:

In TFA we found out Kylo converses with the helmet of Vader. What if Palpatine, through Snoke, broke into Kylo's head to pull him to the dark while Anakin tried to reach Kylo and keep him in the light. It would make sense why Kylo keeps wavering back and forth

He can't come back as a ghost can he? Isn't that a power/skill that Qui-Gon discovered and passed on whilst Plagueis had a more worldly way of sticking around?

Dark Siders can't become Force Ghosts as they are filled with darkness and only pure light sided people can become FG's. Sith can become spirits but they are tired to an object or place. The novelizations of ROTJ, and then The Clone Wars showed this IIRC with Darth Bane.

if Palpatine is somehow still present in one form or another then is this still true?

Serkis shed some light on just how powerful his character actually is. When asked if his character is more powerful than Darth Vader and the Emperor, Serkis said: "Oh, without question. He has limitless resources, let's put it that way."

i was always of the opinion that 'Snoke' isn't really dead. i think he'll return too and this will be closely linked to Palpatine (ie he's Plagueis)...

Maybe dark siders can become Force zombies or vampires rather than luminous spirits.

Maybe Palpatine mellowed out after 30 years in the netherworld?

It was never confirmed that Matt Smith was in IX and he has denied being in it. JJ has stated that Ian was on set. Any form of Palpatine we get will likely only be Ian

Its all gonna be about execution, Palpatine/Sideous for me he is the greatest film villain ever and Ian Mcdiarmid has never got enough credit for his portrayal of the character. So having him in the film could be a great boost to the film, it could also make sense to the plot and the books, with in the books Palaptine having a continuously plan, sensing the Darkside in the unknown region, so you could briefly tie in Snokes backstory. The film also needs a new villian with Snoke dead, Kylo conflicted and Hux comedy relief, and Palpatine instantly provides a threat. Plus if they did a force Ghost i've always wanted to see a darkskide force ghost.

However if they do this wrong it is gonna come across like they have ran out of ideas and are just rehashing old characters and the plot from original trilogy.

My hype was in an all-time low after Jedi, now I can't freaking wait!

I just want to see Palps back as the saga's puppet master.

My dream scenario would be a third act with Palpatine and the Knights vs. Rey and Kylo.

When I saw him say this, I immediately thought "he's alive and in the flesh". Otherwise, what is confusing about it? The question, if you peel back the layers, that Finn (I mean Boyega) was asking was "How does that work [if he's dead]". If it's a recording, I'm pretty sure Boyega knows how recordings work.

Are you referring to TLJ as Jedi? Please only refer to RotJ as just Jedi, if any.

Actually in an earlier draft of "Revenge of the Sith" Palpatine was Anakins Creator/Father.

George changed it later in the writing process.

I'm not convinced Palpatine is the main villain of the movie. Could be, but it could also be a red herring. I can see him being the MacGuffin that leads to something else. All in all, I'm definitely open-minded. It could go very wrong if executed poorly, but I think it could work. There's no way J.J. doesn't realise he's stepping on thin ice here and I tend to believe he must have a good reason to go back to Palpatine, something deeper than using him because there has to be some great evil for the good guys to fight. At least I hope so...

I also hope that the rule of dark side users not being able to come back from the dead (like Jedi) won't be retconned too blatantly... ;) I have to admit, thought, that the idea of his spirit being trapped in the wreckage of the Death Star is kind of appealing. It would create some sort of nest of the dark side, like the cave on Ahch-To.
