I assume that Palpy remains unseen because they are hiding how he looks in RoS. Like, if he's some sort of gruesome reanimated corpse attached to a life support machine, they'd like to keep this unspoiled for a dramatic reveal in the film. (Also, our discussions on HOW he will return surely is free advertisement for the movie).

I agree. His looks are likely going to be different and they just don’t want it out before the movie

    McDiarmid's promotional video character dialogue:

D23 Special Look: Your journey...nears its end.
Trailer: Long have I waited...and now...your coming together...is your undoing.
TV Spot: Let the final battle begin.
TV Spot: This will be the final word in the story of Skywalker.

    Potential McDiarmid character dialogue:
Leaked merchandise style guide: We are not leaders, we are lords.
Leaked merchandise style guide: Nothing will stop the return of the Sith. (could be Driver's dialogue if not)

    Any others?

I think and hope the same thing. I think it would hurt the six movie story arc of Anakin if he is.

The only way in my eyes that Palpatines return is successful is if somehow Anakin is still the one that finishes him off for good.

Otherwise I dont see how it doesnt leave a massive smear of desperation all over the film.

It would be interesting if they finally fleshed out obi wan's "more powerful than you can imagine" line from ANH. Force ghost battle royale anyone? Lol

I was totally on board until the force ghost battle.
    That... not, please.

But if the point is “a long chess game” between Jedi and Sith then I agree the endgame may have to do with the force ghost as well...

There could be a path that connects all the weird staff Maz spoke about in TFA to the “hundred of generations live in you now”.

I can add other hints. Many actually. But that would probably require a new thread.
Maybe I will in the next few days.
    For now... 90% agree

Lol you can agree 100% if you wish, as the force ghost thing... Total joke and quite honestly as far as this movie is concerned... Worst nightmare lol.

I just hope this 'chess game' was rigged from the start and the writers always knew who would win and how. If they are playing 'chess' for real, I think we are all in for a major disappointment.

Lupus in fabula.... just saw this CT’s interview

    https://uproxx.it/pgzev2r

“We decided pretty early on that we wanted to really think of this as the Skywalker Saga. And from the beginning, the chess game has been between Palpatine/Sideous and the Jedi. Specifically, the Jedi as represented by Anakin and the Skywalkers. So, we were convinced someway or another Palpatine had to be a presence in this film.”

“That moment when Vader lifts Palpatine was a genuine shock to me and it’s full of truth and beauty. We had to be careful about that, but if you look at some of the lore of Palpatine and the Sith and the way that George has embedded ideas about the Sith into the mythology of Star Wars, there are ways the presence of that character can still cast its shadow in the future. I guess I’ll leave it at that.”

Notice how he is vague about Palpatine’s “presence/shadow”.
He also speaks about Sith lore...

I may be wrong... but I don’t think he “survived” and that cloning is not an option.

That said, I don’t think this was the plan for the get-go.
    I just don’t.

And I believe that the ST will feel disjointed, not matter what.

Still there is a tiny chance that they came up with something creative enough to not be a disaster.
They’re walking on a tricky edge.
And the result may end up being something laughable or something good.

Yeah that's always been my fear. SW has always been disjointed. There's been alot of moments weve had to play dumb to accept the story and allow it to make sense. It's quite ironic that the most cohesive narrative is the PT lol.

However if they can pull off some sort of mystery/reveal that makes sense and isn't completely irrelevant to the plot (looking at you GOT) then it could work. It only has to consist with the lore that has been expanded upon in the movies so far to be a success. They can't bring in a brand new element now as it would just cheapen the hell out of everything. In my opinion I think they will either leave his return very vague and open to interpretation or he did actually survive rotj somehow. I can't see them using cloning, holocrons or other supernatural tomfoolery. May as well credit JarJar for all the good it would do.

Also how they finish it will be key, if he is truly alive IMO only Anakin can kill him or at least has to be the driving force (pun intended) behind it.

It would be rather poetic to see all the skywalkers (assuming leia dies at some point in 9) in death standing side by side with the new generation to defeat the last of the old.

Having Anakin, Luke and Leia standing behind Rey and/or Kylo as Palpatine is finally defeated would be a really strong image.

There are dozens of ways they can do it. I just hope they don't try and insult our intelligence with some ridiculous gimmick.

I absolutely LOVE the new TV spot showing Kylo Ren encountering Palpatine/Sidious. Palpatine is without a doubt my favourite character from the whole Star Wars saga, and I was worried that he wouldn't have a big role in this film. I was concerned he would just show up at the end for a final showdown with Ben and Rey, but from this new TV spot it seems like hes going to be a little more involved than that. I know the two voices we hear in the trailer are that of Snoke and Vader, I was just wondering if, when Palpatine says 'my boy' - could this be a reference to Han Solo? Did Han ever refer to Ben as 'my boy'? Just a thought.

Before the TFA I was CONVINCED that the Big Bad was going to turn out to be Plagueis. I truly believed that Snoke would turn out to be him and I was so excited at that possibility. Palpatine though is 10 times better than that and itll tie everything up so well!

I agree that Palpatine is probably a better way to end than Plageuis, but I would love it if they did something to tie it back to the Plagueis/Palpatine story about cheating death. I was initially concerned about how they would include Palpatine in a way that fits the story at this point in the ST, but after seeing the clip, I'm just grateful that we get more from him and looking forward to finding out what will happen in the movie. I can't believe that we are getting the last main saga movie next week.

Thanks to a newly released interview conducted on the set of TRoS, it can now be unequivocally and officially stated that Palpatine is back in the flesh and is an integral part of the movie, so anybody who continues to play the denial game in that regard is going to be disappointed.
