I think these possession theories are quite interesting and a good way to bridge the entire saga in the last installment. Although, I want Palpatine to be the big evil, not just a skin suit for some expanded universe/side character. My hope is that Palply learned his master's secrets and killed him, as was hinted at in RotS, and I would find it anoying if he's just a marionette puppet for an unholier-than-thou character whome we have never seen in the saga. That would, IMHO, be quite unsatisfying.

I agree. Palpatine is the main big bad of the Saga. We might get another Plagueis reference but I don’t think anything more than that.

I hope his intro scene is his cloaked hood faced away from the camera before he says: ''I've been expecting you'' before his famous laugh.

I’m starting to think the whole Palpatine thing is going to be a humbug like the wizard of oz. Matt Smith will be the person behind the illusion. The impostor (Matt) will take palpatine’s guise, in some holographic tricky way (thence McDermott) :D... I would rather have palpatine and his legend being used to intimidate than him using someone else and coming back all badass... The theatrical and cheating nature of evil would be actually quite an interesting theme.

In this scheme snoke and the FO would just be a group manipulated by the big guns: the empire in exile. Matt Smith( or whoever palpatine’s impostor is) might be pretending he is more powerful than he really is... Besides for me the true story in this trilogy is Kylo conquering the evil in himself rather than defeating another powerful force user.

Only problem is that I'm not sure Matt Smith is even in EP9. I think it's only been a rumour that he is.

But I do agree it will be like a possible wizard of oz type thing, possibly. Or he really needs a host body to live. Not sure, yet. But I don't think he will be in it flesh and blood. And have thought that for a long time.

as rumors go... it was a very strong one.

to my knowledge the only thing he has ever said when asked if he is in TROS is..
"As far as I can tell, I’m definitely not"

very clever response lol.. because he would not be permitted to tell - if he has a hush-hush role.

No Plapatine, please. Been there, done that. The ST needs an original villain.

Instead we're getting a rebooted Vader and Plapy.

You could sell me on the first if it was done well, but the second undermines the OT too much.

Are you suggesting a wiser, more powerful Sith Lord?

If so, I'm all in to see muh dad onscreen!

    No.

Something different that fits a more original story that still feels necessary for the Saga.

My own choice would be for a villain who shows how difficult it is to rebuild a democratic form of government.

I hear this of the but I can't see how Palpatine returning would undermine the OT... Surely Vader acted to save his son in the throne room. Failing to kill Palpatine or/and his influence doesn't undo that.

Well, how did Palpatine survived ?

Did he fly ? Did he escape in a ship ? Is he able to change bodies like a ghoul ?

Is he Plagueis who in fact never die ?

Is it an emergency move because Snoke was cut in a half ?

Why did he disappear for so long ?

Essence transference (see the most recent Darth Vader comics)

    "The long game".

In a story saga that has always been specifically predicted on the concepts of myth and cyclical narrative, Palpatine returning really shouldn't be surprising to anyone.

    So he's basically immortal ?

At what distance do the transference work ?

Yeah. We all have these questions and I don't know what to think about it. I'm Still hoping that we are going to see him in a flashback or as an old holocrom from the time of the empire.

If the explosion of the Death Star didn't kill him, I don't see what can.

BTW, it's just making the end of RoTS completely pointless and Vader's sacrifice utterly useless.

Not really, because essence transference isn't a perfect guarantee of survival.

He would have transferred his essence into an artefact before his death as a "failsafe" and a contingency in the same vein as Operation Cinder.

As an aside, the more we start to learn about TRoS, the more apparent it becomes that the perception that "Abrams isn't going to be beholden to or rely on Auxiliary Canon in order to bring the Saga films to an end" isn't an accurate one.

Like when he screamed falling at the end of RoTJ and before the explosion ?

So at that moment, he transferred himself into an artifact which felt on Endor ?

Did he haunted Snoke too ? And transferred himself again before being cutting in half or was he still in Endor in his box ?

Is there a box somewhere with Plagueis inside it ?
