So how does everyone feel about this? Would you pay $50 for a one night streaming or 24 hour rental of many of the biggest release sites just 2 weeks after they premiere in theaters? Do you think the general population would go for it? How would many of the big chain theaters react? Would they slowly die out? Would it force them to get even more high end in order to differentiate themselves from a home viewing experience to survive?

I myself only go to the actual cinema for movies I think would benefit from the big screen, high end audio I can only get at a theater. I would say perhaps 8 movies a year meet that criteria. They are usually sci-fi, historical or war movies. Other than that I am more likely to wait them out for home viewing with a few exceptions. I could see myself maybe going for 6-10 of these 2 week to premiere to home movies that sort of fall in a grey zone. The gray zone being where I wasnt quite willing to go for the all out theater experience but interested in paying for a early home release at the $50 a pop rate.

I think theaters are going to eventually die. Things like 3D quickly fizzed out for me but I have read about the so called 4d theaters that include thing like pumping in other environmental sensations to add to the experience but beyond the ones in the actual Disney park attractions I have never really been to one. These bells and whistles though substantially blow up the price and become self defeating. Security concerns, over priced concessions both the normal and premium further kill things. I could see the day that there might be all major studio releases going straight to home releases. 4K big screen TVs are becoming them new norm and more and more of the people, many of whom I would by no means consider well-off even have decent off-tv speaker systems. Combine the upside of home viewing with the downside of theater viewings and I think the writing is on the wall.

I don't find much logic in the article. Theatre owners would have to be incredibly stupid to go for that. It's perfectly obvious that that would either destroy the theatre industry or be a complete waste of money for those making said home videos. Who wants to pay $50 for a movie that they don't even know if it's good? So many people are cheap and they prefer to pay a few bucks for nasty looking bootleg movies just to conserve some bucks and these idea people think said buyers are going to dish out 40 or 50 dollars just to see a movie two weeks after it hits the theatre?

Yeah my first thought while reading the article was, so the movie studios are trying to talk the theater owners into going along nicely and commiting suicide. Although who knows I thought I heard something not to long ago about the studios and theater owners drastically changing the money making structure so something seems to be freaking them out,

You said it as that would indeed be committing suicide! I don't know why but that post just reminded me of what a simple little thing like Red Box did to huge video rental stores everywhere.
