They were definitely in that. Their appearance was based on the description in Heir to The Empire and the accompanying West End Games sourcebook, which I think was the first time an illustration of them actually appeared anywhere.

Until then, I'd never really imagined them as an alien race... I always pictured them more as some underground network of regular guys or resistance fighters.

This is why I never really gravitated toward the EU stuff. It tries to explain away too much, and in the end renders it all sort of mundane. I love the implication of a much larger universe, with spice mines and bothans and Captain Antilles and the need for "no disintegrations." As a kid it's that kind of nuanced detail that provoked my imagination. What's a bothan? Who knows! Make it up.

Ackbar was lucky not to have took off with his ships & left the rest of rebels to deal with the second death star, we would not have seen his famous ''it's a trap'' quote.

Bothans are a werewolf-looking species. Kind of like the ones seen in the cantina in Star Wars.

In Jedi though, it is obvious they mean 'those who inhabit the planet Botha or the Bothan system' but like a previous poster stated, they had some insane need to fill in every gap in the EU materials and as far as science fiction goes, a lot of it is pretty bad.

In my humble opinion nothing was more retarded then making 'every Bothan a spy' and 'every Hutt a gangster or criminal'

    Talk about racial profiling.

To say that the interest is on the artist's intent seems like a neat workaround to me. Say what you want about the PT, but the original artists of the original trilogy certainly didn't have them in mind.

i really never gave it much thought in the past...Bothans could have been code for a group of elite soldier spy network. The would never want to give something like that away with such a large group of people, Even if they were all trusted advisers. You have to think that anyone at anytime could be a spy, and intelligence is always a priority. The Pentagon for instance has specific rooms for sharing secrets. designed to screw with all electronic recording devices and block out noise, and of course cell phone service. But i also like the idea that they are Dog people, that just makes since! i dont think the script writer ever intended to expand on this so in reality its probably just a filler line. Still though its fun to think about.
