Mark Hamill has recently explained that he's less interested in making a return to the franchise for Star Wars Episode IX because of the death of Carrie Fisher. This doesn't rule out him ever doing another project in the series, however - just that he'd be less excited to do so if asked.

Hamill recently spoke to ABC News about the future of the franchise, to which Hamill noted that he doesn't feel as invested in it series knowing that he can't play off of Carrie Fisher's Leia again, and that Harrison Ford is seemingly unlikely to return (even for a flashback):

It should be noted that in spite of this statement, Hamill has left multiple hints suggesting that he'll play Luke once again in the trilogy-capper - both before and after the release of The Last Jedi. As it stands, the door's wide open for Mark Hamill to return as a Force Ghost, and I think that having Luke in a crucial role in Episode IX would be a good way to provide an olive branch to fans who are still divided over the controversial sequel. J. J. Abrams wanted to write dialogue for the character, and this would be a golden opportunity. (Not even an action scene involving the character appearing as a spirit is off-limits now, as Yoda's cameo established that Force Ghosts can truly interact with the physical world.) While Star Wars isn't strictly his story, Episode IX will bring the Skywalker Saga to a close, and his presence would be greatly valued by just about everyone.

I read this mainly as Mark paying homage to his beloved friend. I think he's being very humble here and underestimates how much joy and value he brings us on his own. We need him in IX, especially now that Han and Leia can't return.

It's an unfortunate comment, because knowing that this is his mindset saddens me as a fan. At the same time, I realise he's probably exaggetating a little bit. He often does. Moreover, people are going to misinterpret this quote to death... I can see those freaking headlines: "Mark Hamill doesn't care about Star Wars anymore" or "In the aftermath of TLJ even Hamill admits Star Wars is dead to him." Ugh...

I worry about the clickbaiters/haters running with this: "See even Mark Hamill hates TLJ and his portrayal of Luke! CLICK MY VIDEO! STAR WARS IS DOOMED!" Look it's fine if you hate TLJ, but constantly using stories to spin your narrative is a whole nother level of hate and vice versa.

Well Mark and myself have pretty much the same attitude about Luke returning. Only way I would be genuinely excited is if they did a flashback or something with Han. At this point for some reason I would be much more excited about a young Luke being played by Sebastian Stan.

    Smart cookie.

I have no doubt he'll be in E9, if only as a semi-reactionary way of responding to appealing to those still upset over TLJ and because J. J. Abrams really wants him to be in there.

See, I feel so bad for Mark here.

He's clearly grieving Carrie. They were really close, and having to be on set for Star Wars has to be an incredibly difficult thing with her gone now. Same for with Harrison no longer involved. It's got to feel like all his friends have left town.

I hate the fact that already it's clear that Mark can't express his grief with this without toxic fanboys rushing in and blubbering on about how Kathleen Kennedy ruined Star Wars or whatever. Just let the man be sad, for goodness sake.

edit: Not to mention that with all of the awful people taking advantage of this, Mark is likely going to have to come out publicly and explain his sentiment here, possibly even devaluing his own concerns and feelings.

Not everything needs to be some conspiracy against the fans, guys, and this is just plain harmful.

If he returns I'd be happy but I think he wants to pass on the torch to the younger ones to carry it forwarded.
