I think a lot of it was that Mark was disappointed he couldn't be more a part of the making of the film and have high school reunion time in that fashion with Carrie, Harrison, Tony and Peter and anyone else who was around from the OT and said as much. I think a lot of it as well is taking it out of context and he himself has said that it was a good script.

The way I see it, you can kind of address this whole thing with a single example:

Yes, that would've been a way to tell a story, too. And what's more, it would have been really cool! But it would have been a different story than what we got. Yes, we would get to see an incredible fight between Luke and Kylo (one that I have a hard time believing Kylo could walk away from) but we would have lost the emotional fight for life with Rey.

The point is, Mark wants to tell a story with Luke. And it's certainly not a bad story. But it is not the story, at least not this time. And, like many creative minds, I can understand his frustration, but I have faith that he'll understand what's best for the fans.

Also, we'd still need to know the backstory of Ben-Luke-Snoke for a greater context to be placed on that fight. There still would be a pretty shallow context to that fight. It'd be Obi-Wan vs. Vader in ANH, but even less - ANH's saber battle wasn't the climax, and it had the context of Luke seeing the man who - allegedly - killed his father, kill his then-mentor. Rey wouldn't have had that relationship, so there was even less context and we'd still have some questions going into Ep. 8.

My whole point for everyone can be summed up in this statement:

"If the writers fail to take into account the characters way of doing things, then we aren't really being delivered Star Wars. They are fabricating a completely different Luke that conflicts with everything written before. Something to keep in mind."

So in essence we will have to wait and see.

But Mark Hamill has been correct on Luke's way of doing things.

Luke is Luke. If there was no good reason for him not to set off for Han Solo to save him, or sense it, then that is NOT Luke.

We will have to wait and see. Mark has valid points. We all have seen Luke on how he acts, how he thinks.

Perhaps something was more important on Achto for him to not show up. Perhaps the Dark Side clouded his vision. We don't know.

Yet like I said, if any writer for Star Wars neglects a character's way of doing things, without good reason, then that is not the character.

Maybe Luke just grew heartless over the years and decided to just watch Han die, like a movie?

You can see why Mark has concerns. That concern alone is enough to possibly have warranted an entire rewrite.
