While speaking to Fandango's Erik Davis after the end of The Last Jedi panel at Star Wars Celebration Orlando, Mark Hamill revealed that after he saw the script for The Force Awakens, he proposed to director J.J. Abrams that Luke should witness the death of Han Solo thus reuniting with his old friend at least in some capacity.

    Here are Mark's exact words:

I definitely think that Mark's idea was not terrible at all, but it definitely wouldn't have served the story well. The lack of reunion between Han and Luke was something that many old fans had problems with. But we should remember that the new movies are about the new characters. Luke showing up during the conflict at the end would have pushed the movie in a completely different direction.

What do you think? Would you prefer that Luke showed up during the final battle, witnessing the death of his old friend? Or did they do the right call to make him a mystery.

That would be a great scene.

I really thought they had plans to reunite the big three (or five if you count Chewie and the droids) in a creative way. I figured they would do a flashback scene, maybe something on Endor if it served the story, but now that Carrie Fisher is gone I cant see them digitally recreating her in any way. Its too soon and would be perceived as tasteless. Its a bummer that the heroes didn't have one final "damned fool crusade to save the galaxy" but we just just have to let go of that dream.

The lack of a "happy reunion" is the cost of Luke's isolation. His fear put him away from his friends and family and it cost them dearly. Luke reappearing without ever seeing Leia and Han is fitting to me. It shows what poor choices made out of fear can lead to.

If you run away from life, you may miss events or people that can never be retrieved. There are no do overs.

I think it was best left the way they did it, with Luke as the maguffin for the very end of the film.

As nice as it would have been for Luke to show up for the climax of the film and see Han, then it means Luke has to DO something. His lack of presence was the thrust of the plot, so if he showed up it would have to be to accomplish some task, which would have taken away from Rey, Finn and Poe's story.

Luke's impact will be dealt with in TLJ, and I have come to appreciate that.

I think Mark is right, but it's KK's Star Wars now..so there's nothing to about it.

What does Kathleen have to do with this? This was about Mark's idea and JJ deciding not to...

I don't see how that reunion would have served the story. Then he sees it but can't do something about ok, and then? Maybe he goes off to hug leia while Rey and Finn fight Kylo. That causes more problems then it solves and I think it is better to leave the happy ending out and show the gffa in a not so happy way.Yeah in times of war you often don't get a family reunion. Hamill proposed the idea of Luke putting on Vaders mask in RotJ and Lucas wanted to send him of in the sunset without happy ending and I agree with both of them, that his arc can't end well. The problem for me personally was that Luke had a very lucky strain in the OT and wasn't the most interesting character, to much of the "white knight" archetype, which worked ver 3 films, but I'm happy that ended. What TFA did for me was ignite my interest in him again and maybe we see something that is in character in TLJ but still surprising in the end, that could make Luke a great character in the Big3 league.

And I again ask, what does KK have to do with this specific story?

No where is she mentioned. This was Mark addressing JJ Abrams. It never made it past him. Her involvement in the story is utterly irrelevant at this juncture.

I'm noticing a very upsetting trend here lately.

Exactly. The proposed ending by Mark is great...for Mark and Harrison.
It's not great for the story. Makes no sense for Luke or Leia to be there without incredible re-writes.

And if Luke is so strong in the Force, you'd think he'd be able to do something like Force push Kylo and Han apart or something.

For me the bigger question is: "HOW WOULD THAT BE POSSIBL?!

It wouldn't be without a drastic re-write or just being dumb...

Why does everyone need a reunion. This is life, people die, and you regret not being with them at the last moment. The present situation gives more drama and scope to Luke character.

I slowly start to think Mark isnt happy how Episode 7 turned out.
That isnt the first time he said things he expected to be different.

He jokes about his intense preparation for the role, and then ending up having only a small scene. But he absolutely loves The Force Awakens and where at present his and Daisy's story is going. This is in fact one of the few instances were I can actually say with great pleasure: "he told me so" :)

Sssssuuuurrrreee! She has nothing to do with the story. That's the reason why SHE cut in when Mark was talking about Luke's role and assured the crowd of Luke's greater role in The Last Jedi. She's taken over for George Lucas...you think she has NO SAY about the stories? You think TFA was done without her consent or input?

Again, what does she have to do with this specific story?
Where is she mentioned? What about this says she was even aware of Mark's idea?

You mean when she did her job to help promote her movie? FFS.
You clowns on here with you unabashed hatred for Kennedy is insane.
