Luke Skywalker is on lockdown. The grizzled Jedi Master's portrayer, Mark Hamill, will be returning for the saga's final episode but instead of dodging First Order laser blasts - he'll be contending with J.J. Abrams' heightened script security.

While filming The Force Awakens, director J.J. Abrams used dark red colored script pages to avoid unauthorized photocopies of the script. The darker hues made the pages unreadable when deposited into a photocopier, thus keeping rogue pages from leaking the movie's secrets. Similar techniques were utilized during filming of the Scream movies and are currently used to protect secrecy on the set of HBO's Game of Thrones. However, Abrams has decided to up the ante for the highly anticipated Episode IX by eliminating physical copies altogether.

It's unclear as to whether we'll see Luke pick up his old lightsaber again, but there's one thing he certainly won't be carrying around: a script. Hamill, currently filming the History Channel drama Knightfall, was allowed a highly coveted paper script on The Last Jedi under assurances that it would be locked up in a safe every night and never leave his sight while on set. Those days are long over.

More script pages for Luke should come as a delight to fans of the actor and his character - Hamill previously spent only a week on the Episode IX set but will now be returning after his duties are completed on Knightfall. During an interview with EW, Hamill admitted most of his work on Episode IX has not been filmed yet, which could indicate a larger role for Luke albeit in a less corporeal form than last we saw him.
It remains to be seen whether these new security measures will help cut down on spoilers between now and the release of the film next year but J.J. Abrams is clearly intent on keeping the secrets of Episode IX locked down tighter than an Imperial blockade. For now, we can count on all of our questions being answered on December 20, 2019.

I feel like the fact he is admitting he hasn't starting filming yet is proof that he is either a force ghost or just has a really small role in general if hes not filming any big scenes with the cast.

I see it more as proof that he's being saved mostly toward the end of the movie, knowing how Abrams prefers to film as much in-sequence as possible.

The problem with having Luke be über-powerful from the start is that there's no conflict if he's able to show up and fix everything. That's why he was saved for the end of TFA, why he "left" Ahch-To only in the last twenty minutes of TLJ, and why most of his scenes are probably going to happen in the back half of this movie. That's also why, for all of Rey's hypercompetent accomplishments, she's done little for the actual war effort in the Sequel Trilogy thus far - and Poe and Finn, who are both substantially less powerful than she is, have done more to directly impact that part of the narrative.

Abrams wanted to work with Mark Hamill more on TFA than he got to, and it seems like E9 is the opportunity for him to get that chance. So I don't see him blowing it, especially knowing that he pushed to find a way to fit many of Carrie Fisher's deleted scenes into the film.

So it sounds like a smaller role but I think it will be a crucial one at some point in the movie, like Yodaa using lightning on the tree x10.

Just because he hasn't started filming yet, doesn't mean he won't have a big role.

Just makes it sound like his role in 9 is going to be not much more then an extended cameo, really sad how he has been used in this trilogy, waited 30 years for Mark Hamill to return to the role and we get a cameo, a subversion and an extended cameo.

    Really disappointing.

Again, that's all any of them were suppose to be in the first place. They weren't about Han, Leia and Luke.

Bit of an asterisk there... there was no guarantee we would get more movies. Blame George really on that one.

Well the trilogy could have been about anything so it could have been about them if the directors had chosen to go down that route, but personally I wasn't asking for a full trilogy about him, but the fact we never got an adventure with Luke Skywalker Jedi master, when a lot of us have grown up dreaming about seeing that and reading stories of it and instead just got a couple of cameos and a subversion, a lot of people are disappointed that the directors have chosen to use one of the most iconic characters in any medium in this way.

If you're not thats great, but personly i am.

True, but when it was announced that we were getting this trilogy one of the things people were most excited about was seeing the original cast back, you spoke to star wars fans back then an even build up to the last Jedi nearly everyone was excited about getting to see Luke as a fully fledged Jedi and go on another adventure with him.

So you can't blame fans for been disappointed that we are going to only end up with a couple of cameos and a subversion.

People can be as disappointed as they want to be (everyone has their own views, and I am not trying to change anyone's mind), but I personally am not really interested in seeing a bunch of 60-70 year olds running around like they did when they were in their 20s. I think what we got of Luke in TLJ was actually pretty awesome! It may not have been what some people were hoping for, but I think it was much more realistic than him acting like a Marvel superhero, which is what it seems a lot of people wanted. And the scene on Crait was great - an older, wiser Jedi making a fool of the impetuous youngster! Very fitting!

The problem is they made Luke the whole catalyst that drove the drama for the ST. His handling of Ben Solo started the events that led up to Episode 7, and then him bailing was a very big plot point for the whole Saga. So they can't have it both ways in that Luke, Leia and Han were going to have cameos (which I would have been totally fine with), but their kid/nephew is a big reason for the rise of the First Order. Once they decided to go that route, they should have developed the events leading up to this better and given Luke, Leia and Han more screentime. Instead we get a movie of Han, a movie of Luke, and then they die.

That's exactly it isn't it, If you like the subversion of the last Jedi then your probably happy, if not your left disappointed.

Personly I wanted to see Mark Hamill playing Luke going on another adventure as an older wiser Jedi Master we didn't get that and never will, and for me and many others we are and always will be disappointing.

But for those who loved what we got, hey I'm honestly thrilled for you guys, I wish I felt the same, It's Star Wars I want to love it!

I get what you are saying. All of us on this forum are pretty invested in Star Wars. We love it and want to always love it. There have been some things I have been disappointed in. I was really looking forward to Rogue One, but I was disappointed in it. That feeling sucks. Sorry you had that feeling with TLJ.

Great post! I think you’ve made a very good point, we’re all Star Wars fans and want to love any new film, so when some one doesn’t like one of the new films we should feel sorry them, rather then shout at them and tell they are wrong.

Like wise if some likes a film you don’t be happy for them.

Of course we should still discuss what we like and don’t like, but do it from a more understanding point of view.

Let's have faith my friend. Hamill is still alive. We only need a wise brain in the industry of tv or cinema to light up.

I would love it to happen, but i don't really see how they do it and fit it in with current cannon, i think that was our one and only chance to have another adventure with Mark Hamill playing Luke, I would love to be proved wrong but I don't see how they do it.

Fact is some ramped up in their mind it was all about Luke. When that wasn't true. From the moment it was announced George Lucas even stated they and Luke were cameos. This whole Luke got treated this way or that was is silly. He wasn't the focus. And , Honestly Mark doesn't make matters better by his problem with it when he knew as well. He didn't have to do anything. There was an adventure with Luke it was called the OT.

As you've said he wasn't the Focus, and I agree, and have never said he needed to be, but it it isnt as black an white as he had to either be the sole focus of the film or be a cameo & and subversion. They could have easily fitted Luke in as Jedi Master and the story still be about Rey and Kylo.....And yes we got the original trilogy and Luke was one of the main reasons people fell in love with star wars, and we saw his journey to becoming a Jedi Knight, and people have been saying for decades how cool it would be to see Luke on screen again as a fully fledged Jedi or later Jedi Master. So when this trilogy was announced people where incredibly excited that the original cast, was coming back and we where finally going to get to see that! So when we don't get to see something which star wars fans had been dreaming of seeing for decades in the only opportunity we are likely to get of course some people are going to feel sad.

As for Geroge Lucas, I love him but Ive heard him say about 50 different conflicting about what episode 7 to 9 would be. Last I heard Geroge wanted this trilogy to be about the whills & midichlorians which this trilogy defiantly hasn't been about, so saying what they did with Luke was great, or for that matter was terrible just doesn't matter at this stage, he didn't write the films. What we got is what JJ Abrams and Rian Johnson intended.

I get that you loved what we got and arn't fussed we will never get that adventure with Mark Hamill playing Luke, but others are, is that such a horrendous thing?

It was said that GL had an outline for TFA which would have had Luke and Rey on some kind of journey, I would assume they team up in the 2nd act of the film. Ironically this could be viewed as a basically Luke and Obi-wan all over again...
