Have you ever heard a band say: "Well, our upcoming album is pretty good but nowhere near as good as the classics we had in the past..." Or a Game developer announcing their new game like this:" This sequel to our groundbreaking Game XY is pretty much more of the same. With better graphics..." You probably haven't. There's this thing called PR and actors are expected to be full of praise when promoting their latest movie.
Disney has an elaborate bonus system which rewards actors "behaving properly" during promotional events. Hamill has shown us time and time again that he is not really good at keeping secrets and sometimes he is more honest than what seems to be good for him. Whenever Hamill has one of his honest moments and blurts out a secret on Twitter he's immediately scolded by some Disney official, there's some kind of demento, etc...
This leads to contradictory statements like: "Mark Hamill says TLJ is the best SW movie since ESB" coexisting with statements like "I fundamentally disagree with all of your (Rian's) choices". To me it seems like Hamill has been urged to step up the promotion game as the release date of TLJ is getting closer and closer. I could be wrong but I am still a bit nervous because so far all that I have heard about "TLJ" is "it's different" which means very little in terms of actual quality. We will have to wait and see....

I get where you’re coming from, but I think he’s being genuine when he says that.

For one, he loves to play villainous or more ambiguously aligned characters (such as The Joker), the latter of which Luke appears to be from this film’s marketing, and it seems he would have been more interested in the early idea for ROTJ that Luke donned the mask of Vader after both his father and the Emperor had died.

Saying it’s the best since the prequels is a lose-lose situation when it comes to the fan base and would be the best way to see his opinions ridiculed (whilst I think Hamill found enjoyment of them, I’ve never read anything to suggest that he thought that they were masterpieces).

So yeah, I think he’s being genuine here. Let’s not forget that film is a completely subjective medium, so it’s totally possible that it’s Mark Hamill’s favourite SW film since TESB but fans could hate it. Considering how his earlier opinions were a bit weird to hear, I wouldn’t be surprised to find that he watched the film several months ago and the film has been festering in his mind for a while now, which could have him have greater appreciation for the film in hindsight, which works well with how he finds the film to be “cerebral”.

I just don’t think Mark’s one of those actors who would lie about his own opinions; he’s very honest with fans, and is always very grateful to them, and he seems the opposite of a corporate sellout, so I doubt anyone could pay him enough to change his opinions.

Wait and see I guess, but I have a good feeling about this...

He certainly isn't a sellout and I always enjoy watching his performances during Star Wars conventions but it seems weird to me that his initial dislike for the screenplay changed so much that he now thinks TLJ is better than Jedi, TFA, R1... Maybe he is just trying to be nice to Rian and to us fans. Hamill doesn't seem to be the person to publicly trash talk something he knows is so beloved by generations of fans like SW is. We will see on Dec. 13th. I'll watch the movie two times in a row like I always do with new SW releases and then I'll finally know whether I join the Rian Johnson hypetrain or not :)

Assuming he isn't doing PR for Lucasfilm, then this just drives my hype levels up even more.

    I can absolutely respect that.

Honestly, I think that Mark was in a closed bubble during TLJ’s filming, and thus didn’t get to see what else happened in the film. If he’s playing a much darker, and seemingly lonely, Luke, it seems to contrast greatly with Mark Hamill’s own personality of telling jokes and being lighthearted much of the time. Not being given context for his performance could certainly have been what resulted in his comments earlier regarding the film.

Just got to wait and see I guess, my friend, but I’m sure you’ll be on the hype train soon enough! :)

Also to be fair, Mark didn't say he didnt like the movie, he just said initially he didn't like where Rian was taking Luke. He had the same thing to say about TFA and then said he was wrong.

During the times of TPM, before its released, I heard Spielberg says "Fans gonna love The Phantom Mence!". After that, I just believe in one person: Me.

That wasn't even the whole quote of what Mark Hamill said. And no one's making him do anything.

To me ESB isn't the golden standard anyway. I'm not gonna compare it and didn't even compare TFA.

Didn't Mark say TLJ was his favorite film since TESB and not the best? The title to the thread is a little misleading.

Yes. His exact quote was "Probably my favorite one since the Empire strikes back."

The inner cynic in me wants to call out Mark and say he is a sellout/ being shackled. But I do agree with most people here that I doubt it. Mark loves Star Wars. He is certainly grateful to the franchise and in turn has never once taken it for granted. And having met him years ago, I can attest to that. And yes it is anecdotal, but unlike some actors, cough Ford, he very much respects the franchise for what it did to him and those many individuals who grew up with it.

That said, I won't lie; Mark saying he disagreed with Rian Johnson had me scared. Because, I love Rian Johnson, but I mean Luke Skywalker is such a cultural icon and really a part of Mark Hamill and how it has defined him. So to hear this news, I am happy.

Because, much like some people here, I do agree he probably has reconciled that this rendition of Luke is very different from what he had in mind. And really, that is my train of thought for Luke and TLJ. This isn't going to be the Luke I am accustomed to. He will be something different. And that is okay. Because, upon emptying one's self of preconceptions; it becomes easier to judge a movie. And really, I look forward to seeing this movie and hoping it lives up to what Mark says it is.

From what I have seen of him in interviews, videos etc, I think that Mark Hamill is probably a "strange" guy. The type who you can never catch up with.

Sometimes I don't know if he even likes Star Wars anymore or if he does, I feel like in the back of his mind he blames his Luke part for his kind of average acting career, just like many actors who did iconic roles and couldn't do anything else. They are asked about this role all the time and you feel that they want to say "oh f..k that, I want to talk about my new movies, projects" etc, but then the interviewer is like " yeah great, but Star wars....."

His reluctancy to return as Luke is also another true story.

About his disagreement on Luke, I believe that back in 1983 he would have discussed with Lucas for some possible continuation of the OT and his view would be of an all powerful Luke restoring the Jedi order with Leia and having children with Mara Jade.

So it's only normal for him to not be that accustomed to this new Luke but I believe that with the time he loved it because his mental state is closer to the one of his other iconic roles, the Joker and the Trickster.

If Hamill after his first viewing of the script disagreed "with everything Rian had written down for Luke", I believe him. If he now says that he now loves TLJ and that it's probably his favourite movie since ESB, then why shouldn't I believe him? Because he's changed his mind and is saying something positive? It scares me how some people are already thinking he might be a sell-out who has been press-ganged by that all mighty evil marketing machine called Disney.

Anthony Daniels said the same exact statement about TFA in the fall of 2015. I get that actors need to hype a film so I take everything they say with a grain of salt.

But I warn fans not to get caught up in the ‘as great as ESB’ hype. Just go in expecting a great or good film and you won’t be setting yourself up for disappointment. We have a habit since the internet of looking at everything in two lenses, “This is the worst movie ever or this is the greatest movie.” It’s usually somewhere in the middle.

I think TLJ will deliver as it may even be a great movie, but I’m not falling in that trap that it’s going to equal ESB. There is a reason a movie is a classic, because it’s so rare when it happens.

To be clear: Mark said the best since TESB, not as good as TESB.

Whilst I agree, I’ve been saying for months that I think this movie has everything going in the right direction, so I won’t at all be surprised if it’s vying to be everyone’s favourite SW film afterwards. I also expect it to perplex a lot of people during their first viewing.
