I'm kinda surprised that there isn't already a thread for this issue. Anyhow, just finished reading issue 17 and I really enjoyed it. I'm less annoyed by cyber people created by Cylo now that the weird Mon Cal/Grievous has been eliminated(I seriously hated his design and found it very distracting). As usual we get more of Vader being a badass Sith Lord, plus some more backstabbing intrigue between he and Cylo.

I must add that I really like the background given on the planet Shu-Torun. I found it interesting when first introduced in the annual, and it continues to grow more interesting as this story arc progresses. Also, just like Vader, I didn't buy that Aphra was dead for a second. Maybe that scene was meant to partially show why Vader doesn't like disintegrations, although I still look forward to finding out why he singled out Boba Fett with that line in ESB.

Lastly, the cover for this issue has to be one of the best, if not the best cover I've seen so far on any of Marvel's Star Wars titles, seriously gorgeous stuff.

Same here! I read the issue last night and I was looking for the review :)

It was an enjoyable issue since it keeps developing the arc-story of what happened to Darth Vader between ANH and ESB. As we can see, the Empire is not free from internal politics and we can see that Tagge and Cylo are sort-of conspiring against Vader. It seems like they resent his close relationship with the Emperor - I don't know if they are aware their dear Emperor is a Sith and Vader his apprentice - but they want to get the Empire victorious, but not Vader.

Some will complain about keeping the stories focused between ANH and ESB but this is Vader and for me it's even endearing to see him face enemies even between his kind - members of the Galactic Empire, that is.

One of the revelations that made me think during this issue was: so Dr. Cylo had anything to do with the assisted-living armor for Vader? I guess so from what he said, maybe he designed this system and had it in inventory by the time Palpatine came back with a dying Anakin from Mustafar.

When the bounty hunter came with a "dead" Dr. Aphra, I seriously gasped. For a short moment I thought the bounty hunters were successful from taking her out of the Rebel Jail, or even killed someone else (Sana?) but rapidly discarded this thought since it is supposed to be continued on the next Star Wars comic.

About Aiolin... when she approaches Vader asking him to train her to beat her twin brother... a theory just came into my mind. What if she survived after ROTJ in some way? (Another potential role for Laura Dern came to mind in Episode VIII. LOL).

Great issue, liked the Shu-Torun planet depiction as @Admiral Petty said. I have a little bit of issue with the drawings of Larroca - sometimes the perspective on faces it is a little weird in my opinion - but Delgado makes a great work with the coloring.

    • Would you follow Darth Vader into war?
    • Better that than to be against him.
    • A lesson the Ore Barons are about to learn…

Following the events of the previous issue, Vader gives an ultimatum to the ore-barons: cease the rebellion before Vader takes things into his own hands. Barons, however, do not intend to give up that easily. They intend to maintain their power over the planet and their ruler.

    DarthVader17-1.JPG

Queen Trios has retreated to a sacred place of her people to contemplate the future. When the barons attack, Vader has no intention to run. Together with the twins Morin and Aiolin he destroys the imposing lava leviathan. The twins are forced, pun intended, to keep up with Vader who wouldn’t be broken up if they perished with the ship.

    DarthVader17-3.jpg

Upon their return, several interesting things happen. Queen requests retribution on the baron Rubix whose vessel attacked the sacred site to which Vader agrees. While we didn’t see much of her in this issue, Trios remains an interesting character: she obviously cares about her people, but she is not beyond using Vader. It will be interesting to see if she eventually chooses to do away with barons entirely and become a true ruler, albeit under the Empire.

We also see that Cylo is in contact with General Tagge. Tagge respects Vader’s powers, but believes that he is taking too many chances. He is winning the battles, but cannot win the war. He wants the Shu-Torun campaign to end as a triumph of the Empire, not Darth Vader.

    DarthVader17-4.jpg
    DarthVader17-5.jpg

Vader gets the news that Aphra was found. But, before he meets with the bounty hunter, he is stopped by Aiolin. She tells him that eventually she would have to fight with her brother and asks Vader to train her, because he is the last legacy of the Jedi. Vader is entirely dismissive of both her and her brother and declines.

    DarthVader17-6.jpg DarthVader17-7.jpg

The bounty hunter is surprised that the client is Darth Vader. If he knew, he probably wouldn’t try to sell disintegrated body as Aphra’s. Vader knows that the body is not Aphra’s and disposes of the bounty hunter as a lesson to all the others.

    DarthVader17-8.jpg

The ore barons are in turmoil after the demonstration of Vader’s powers. Cylo is presented as an expert and promises to deliver them Vader.

    DarthVader17-9.jpg

While we have come to expect Vader destroying everything in his path, some more subtle elements were highlight of this issue for me. One of those things is Cylo insinuating the previous connection with Vader, one for which the Sith should have been grateful for. Is it possible that it was Cylo who created Vader’s suit and saved his life? One thing is for sure, Vader wouldn’t care, especially when he finds out that Cylo is making the same mistake Karbin did.

Aiolin knowledge of Vader’s history is interesting as well. We are led to believe that, especially in this time period, very few people knew who Vader was besides Emperor’s enforcer. Her knowledge suggests that Cylo has much closer relationship with Palpatine than what we might expect. Her request to be trained by Vader might also suggest the cracks in Cylo’s team or, at least, Aiolin’s knowledge that she could be replaced at any time.

I never hid the fact that these cyborg characters were annoying to me, mainly because they do little but boast how good they are. However, if we are given a bit more about them as people – who they are as individuals, what they want for themselves, etc. – I might be inclined to care for them more. If he has to keep them in the story, let’s hope Gillen gives us more nuances as he did in this issue. Larocca’s art continues to be one of the highlights of this series. His clean lines, details and use of shadows are perfectly complimented by Edgar Delgado’s coloring.

Since this is a four-issue arc, we can expect the story to move forward quickly. All the setup is in place so we will probably see Cylo’s plan unfold in the next and resolution in the last issue. For those who have been following Marvel’s Darth Vader from the beginning, this issue will offer several interesting tidbits about the comic’s players while delivering on hard-ass Vader and making promises on the future. The arc may suite newcomers well – it’s only four issues and it is a good sample for what you can expect from the series. I am excited to see how Vader deals with Cylo because he is certainly a smarter opponent then Karbin.

I'm liking this arc more than I thought I would. From the initial descriptions, I was thinking that this would be an inconsequential filler arc, but (even if on a grand scale it is) we're getting some good character development for Cylo and the twins.
From the introduction of Cylo's experiments, the twins have been presented as the most important, and I've been interested in getting to know them as characters... which, hasn't really happened yet. So I'm glad to see them starting to fix that problem here.
    Overall a very solid issue.

@LadyMusashi great review! I liked this issue but didn't love it. The pacing at times felt off for me (panel to panel) and I felt like they were rushing it a bit.
Thank you for stating this! I kinda validates the rushed feeling I was getting while excusing it.

Aiolin is definitely getting more screen time than her brother, and I'm ok with that. It's interesting because I feel like in a way, all of the females surrounding Vader are there to mirror/deconstruct a role of a previous female in Vader's life (or...you know...for him to have a harem like in all of those high school animes...nevermind...). You have - as I mentioned in the last review - Queen Trios deconstructing what Vader's relationship with Padme would be like, Aphra almost as a surrogate Ahsoka without the Jedi training (which is probably good for her in the long run), and now Aiolin could be a breakdown of what being a child of Vader would be like, assuming he trains her and doesn't kill her so he can use her brother as a surrogate Luke. Or maybe he'll keep her alive to try and seduce Luke or something. Who knows what plans are formed in that Sith Lord's head.

Hahaha interesting theory! I wouldn't mind seeing that played out! Now just for clarification and tinfoil theories, does this mean as a character or are you putting her in the bidding for Luke's wife?

Overall, I loved the review and I can't wait to see where the series goes!

Can we all agree here in that Tagge is probably the most logically sound character from ANH? He knew the risk, left, advanced his own plans, made the fleet the priority, and took over Tarkin's spot, yet he was aware of Vader's prowess and was very careful around him. He always felt like the smartest and logical man in ANH, and I love that it's showing here. Vader is just being a pure badass jumping into the ship and destroying it, and in a way that is both devastating and controlled, shows hes still got the old fighting leadership of the Clone War, and totally rejects the twins in the OT style of Vader-speak, if that makes sense. If anything, his line has been one of the only times I've seen Vader, not Anakin, develop as a character, which is awesome!
