Han and Leia on the run from the Empire. Luke in peril on the Smuggler's Moon. Chewie and Threepio to the rescue! And so the saga continues...

Well, it certainly has been a busy day for Marvel with the release of not one, not two, but four Star Wars related issues - one of them of course being the tenth issue of the titular series - a series that has been shaping up really nicely in recent issues, compared to its mediocre beginnings.

The issue begins with Han and Leia on board Sana's ship, the Volt Cobra, on the run from Imperials. After a lot of back and forth banter between the three, the trio are finally able to make the jump to hyperspace. Unfortunately, we still don't get full disclosure on the Sana and Han relationship, but we do get a little snippet about a supposed "marriage" that took place on Stenness.

It's pretty clear from the exchanges between Sana and Han, with her constant use of the word "husband" with a smirk on her face and his beligerent denial of the legitimacy of said union, that Han is not actually married to this woman. Hopefully in the next issue or so, we will finally be able to put this plot thread to rest as it is starting to become a little bit tiresome, even if it does add some fun tension between Han and Leia. They eventually receive a transmission from the Alliance about Luke being in trouble on Nar Shaddaa, and off they go to help their friend.

Meanwhile, on the Smuggler's Moon, we see Luke being escorted by Magnaguard droids into a coliseum type arena under the orders of Luke's captor Grakkus the Hutt, the gigantic Hutt with spider legs and connoisseur of Jedi artifacts we were introduced to in the last issue. Apparently, Grakkus has big plans to exploit Luke's gladitorial style death in his arena and expects big profit from those who want to witness the death of the last Jedi in person. Luke is introduced to the Gamemaster, a gladiator trainer of sorts, and we see a glimpse of the monster he will surely be pit against in the next issue.

The issue also follows Chewbacca and C-3PO as they bring the Falcon to Nar Shaddaa to rescue Luke. After Chewbacca gets information about Luke's whereabouts from the local miscreants as only a Wookiee could, by of course - ripping people's arms out of their sockets - he sets out to find Luke at Grakkus' palace.

The issue ends in a cliffhanger of sorts with all of the main characters converging on the Smuggler's Moon and an interesting last couple of frames that reveal a new threat on the rise for the mighty Chewbacca. This issue was definitely a building block, a stepping stone, in the overall story.

Although not much here to write home about, we do seem to have a nice little set up going on that I'm hoping will lead to an explosive second half of this arc. Even though this series got off to a slow start, it is definitely picking up steam, and with the second arc of the series nearing its climax, its a great time to check it out if you haven't already.

I liked Grakkus's assortment of beasties for his gladiator fights. A wampa, something with tentacles like in Jabba's prison, and possibly one of the creatures on the holochess board from ANH. Any idea what the other two are?

The tall one looks like a Ronto (first seen at Mos Eisley in the Special Edition of Episode IV: A New Hope.)

Was that Dengar in the last panel?

If I like one thing in this and other canon materials is how they add to and are trying to strengthen the movies: here we got an explanation how Luke could even survive the first meeting with Vader (although Vader was mostly playing with him) when he didn't get any lightsaber training. Well, apparently he did.

At first, I liked how they didn't serve the answer to Sana Solo situation at once, now it's just getting old. But, the buildup with them all coming to Smugglers' Moon promises an explosive end to this arc before the Vader Down arc.

I liked how all the roads are finally converging. For some reason too, I find that Taskmaster/Trainer character to be the coolest. Good issue, and I can't wait until the next one!

That's what I thought, but I never considered them ferocious monsters. Maybe Jawas are more badass than I thought?

Either that or it was a rancor - which would cheapen RoTJ somewhat so I hope you're right!

That was most def Dengar, and it was an interesting/hilarious choice to have him talking to a Gungan. A badass Gungan on the smugglers moon with a pirates eyepatch? Hilarious.

I have a faint faint suspicion that the Gamesmaster is Quinlan Vos, or, failing that, someone with a great level of familiarity with Jedi - like a clone trooper, random padawan, or an old Clone Wars era bounty hunter. He definitely had potential for depth and displayed some knowledge of the ways of the force and lightsaber combat.

In the last month we have been introduced to a few new antagonists, with saber-ish skills, who lack (or have not developed) force powers. Interesting.

    Welcome back, Dengar!!

I enjoyed this issue much more than the last two. I'm getting used to the cadence of the plot.

If he is Quinlan Vos, I think they would have to explain his red skin ;). The Gamemaster did really interest me though, I hope we find out about him. With his skin being red I would have to assume that he is an alien. I can think of two red skinned species of aliens from EU material off the top of my head. The first being the Zeltrons, who have already been canonized in A New Dawn, and the second being the Sith species from the EU. A third possibility is that he is a Twi'lek, however based on the art, it certainly doesn't seem like he is hiding any head tails under his hood.

Frankly, Zeltrons are known for being a very empathetic species in EU, so unless they are changing them in the new Canon that seems unlikely, although it could add an interesting wrinkle to the character of the Gamemaster.

The Sith species also seems unlikely, in Legends they died out millennia before the movies. Additionally, I could see the Story Group not wanting to reference the Sith as a species so as to not confuse fans in the new canon. Also, we never get a good look at the Gamemaster's face, but from what we do see there doesn't seem to be any trace of the tendrils on his face that would mark him as that species(although the prominence of the tendrils could vary greatly from one Sith to another in Legends).

There are a few things in favor of him possibly being a pureblood of the Sith species though(which doesn't mean he would be a practicing Sith in the the sense that Vader or Sidious is though). First, we do have a precedence of connections to the Sith species in canon now. Two different sources mention the Massassi species as the builders of the temples on Yavin IV. In legends the Massassi were an offshoot of the Sith species that were enslaved by them to act as warriors and slaves. It should be noted however that nothing in new Canon material describes the appearance of the Massassi, so they may not appear the way they were originally rendered in Legends. Another clue to the possible existence of the Sith species is a line from the book Aftermath, in one of the scenes they describe an ancient vase with red faced figures wearing dark hooded robes. This definitely isn't surefire proof that the Sith species exist, but it certainly would seem to hint that they exist in some form in the new Canon. If they do exist, it would be reasonable to say that they may have changed the name of their species, possibly merging them with the Massassi.

Now if the Gamesmaster were a Sith/Massassi/new proxy for the the Sith species of old, it might explain why he seems to have at least a rudimentary knowledge of the Lightsaber combat and possibly, the Force.

The other possibility to consider of course is that the Gamemaster is a completely new species in the Star Wars canon.

Don't think it was Jar Jar - too skinny. But if it were, they would be throwing him into the fire, then pointing and laughing and making fun of him for sure. Fan service.

Interestingly, I did not notice red skin at all - dude just looked like an ordinary human with a hood on. I will give it a third read and have a closer look! I think odds on he's a new race, but it would be cool to see the Sith species re-canonized. I think it's safe to say most of us comic followers would be familiar with them, and the story group have been re-canonizing lot's of old EU content.

I have a feeling that it might be. This takes place 20 yrs from the last time we've seen him and we don't know his fate. I know we only heard a few Gungans talk in the films but I don't remember ANY of them talking the way Jar Jar does.

Captain Tarpals - http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Roos_Tarpals - spoke with the same creole, but slightly more mature manerisms. He was the guy that caught Jar Jar and the Jedi in Ootoh Gunga and then fought alongside Jar Jar in the big battle on the plains. Not saying it's him - doesn't look anything like him and he did die in legends.

I feel like if it were Jar Jar they would have drawn him at weirder angles and with more Jar Jar mannerisms, but can't rule it out!
