I figure I should open by mentioning that since this is a remaster of the original Marvel accompaniment to A New Hope it is unlikely to be considered canon. You may find it strange that I say that considering it is based on the film, but there are a few additions (such as the deleted scenes) and slight changes to dialogue. It is also worth noting that, despite the cover being a complete redesign of the old cover, the art itself is merely a recolouring.

Considering we all know the story (or at least I bloody hope so considering where we are) I just thought it would be worth creating this post to share the art style and a general view on the remaster since I know a few may wish to see a bit before purchasing it themselves. As anyone familiar with the older Star Wars Marvel comics, or just older comics from that era in general, will know, the art style was fairly crude compared to the almost photo-realistic quality of today. The recolouring brings the old images to life, but you can obviously still notice the aged artwork, but that is to be expected and is appreciated on my part.

It's wonderful seeing a new take on the old interpretation of events of A New Hope and, as I've said, the recolouring really does justice to the artwork. It's also interesting seeing the deleted scenes and a few extra bits brought to life such as the Anchorhead scene:

I won't babble on any more because I think the images do justice better than my words. I would recommend a look to anyone with an interest in the history of Star Wars or just looking to explore A New Hope in a different way. Enjoy!

I was wondering about canon with these remastered releases. So far they have mentioned two continuities, the new canon & legends. And that seems to be all there is. All SW media fits in to one or the other. All previous material outside of film and clone wars is now Legends (so naturally, insert marvel comic here). But everything new is supposed to be canon. Sure, Marvel re-released a lot of Dark Horse collected editions with the marvel brand, but these also all have the legends logo on the cover, which indicates that even though it's a new release, it is a re-branding of something old and the label clearly identifies it. This seems to be absent from the remastered release. Any word yet on whether these additional scenes are part of the new canon or can we throw them out with the other EU stuff?

Although I don't remember there being a Legends banner on the front cover, the remasters are split into their original comics within and the cover of each iteration includes the Legends banner! So I think it's safe to assume they are Legends as a result of the deleted scenes etc. Then again, in Star Wars 005 (new canon) we see reference to the Anchorhead scenes, so it's unclear as to whether these are canon or not - I suppose only time will tell!

Thanks for posting this, Jordan. This slipped under my radar. Looks like they did a really great job on this! I'm excited for more!

It is available for purchase online through Marvel or comiXology for $19.99.

I figured we likely wouldn't see one of your excellent reviews for this one given its Legends status and the bulk of comics flying our way as of late, so I thought I'd throw a post up! It is a good read and the recolouring adds a lot. I find it interesting from a historical point of view to see how far graphic novels have come in the time since ANH!

I'll try to get around to it. I've just revisited the NPR radio dramatization of the Original Trilogy. I'm sure that's all Legends now too, but really great stuff. Again, thank you for sharing this here.
