After a really cool glimpse into the broken and fragile character of Depa Billaba and Kanan's life at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant last week, Weisman picks up right where he left off with another great issue involving a surprise attack on the temple and some great bonding time between Billaba and her soon to be apprentice.

Issue #8, Chapter 2 in the First Blood story arc, like the previous issue, begins in the Rebels era with the Ghost crew anxiously awaiting the healing of their friend and resident Jedi cowboy, Kanan Jarrus, who was injured a couple of issues back. After having just been told that it would not be safe to move Kanan from his bacta tank slumber for another few weeks, our heroes are surprised by what can only be Agent Kallus, or another Imperial demanding their surrender.

I guess the crew will be forced to make a hasty decision regarding Kanan's relocation, but that will have to wait until next issue, as Weisman takes this opportunity to cut back into Kanan's bacta-induced recollection of another time he faced certain death - when a mysterious separatist / Ninja Assassin attacked his home in the Jedi Temple.

Explosion after explosion sends every Jedi in the temple on high alert and forces them into action. Some cameos from the last issue continue with Yoda, Obi-Wan, and Mace Windu, but the real action focuses on Depa Billaba and young Caleb Dume (Kanan). Surprisingly, it's Caleb who first springs in to action, chasing the attacker after Billaba instructs him that they should just hide and wait, revealing her insecurities after her failed last mission which saw nine out of ten of the men under her command annihilated. Broken, and insecure, it's Caleb who gives her the strength to do what was necessary.

Realizing that the boy will not last long on his own, she comes to his rescue, and together they fight to apprehend the mad bomber. It is after this confrontation that Depa admits that she needs a padawan by her side to continue her journey. Despite his youth, she chooses Caleb as her padawan, a decision that excites Caleb beyond belief and stirs some jealousy among his peers. But don't worry, they'll soon get what they deserve...

Kidding...that was awful, and I apologize - but seriously, they could have showed a little support for the guy. Anyways, moving on...

The end of the issue introduced young Caleb to some familiar clone troopers from the first arc of the series, and there was a nice little cameo from General Kleeve in there as well, who took part in the planning of the separatist attack on the Jedi Temple, based on some intel by a certain blue bounty hunter from the Clone Wars series that I, personally, would love to see in this series or in Rebels in the future.

I might be enjoying this arc more than the first, which is saying something, since I really loved the first six issues of the series. I can't wait to see where this story goes and I'm loving how it feels like I'm watching some more lost episodes from the Clone Wars that tie us in to the Rebels series. I have a feeling there are great things to come, and next issue looks very promising indeed...

Don't forget to support your local comic shops, and as always, may the Force be with you.

This was a great Wednesday, not one miss! :D

Man, I like Kanan. The way Caleb forces Depa to intervene, to show how badass she actually is - so much fun!

Have we seen Master Drallig in Legends? Because, he is not in a new canon and he looks cool.

And that last panel? Feels. Larraz draws great action, possibly the best in Marvel's SW comics at the moment.

    I cannot wait for more.

    EVERYONE READ KANAN!

Cin Drallig was the leader of the Jedi Temple Guard and appeared in a hologram in Episode 3. He was also featured in the Clone Wars season 5 episode "Sabotage", where he undergoes an investigation to find out who bombed the temple (Barriss Offee).

Oh yeah! I'm really digging First Blood. Mostly since we finally get to see Master Billaba for an extended time. And gods she's a great character.
The only complaint at this point is really, the Temple got bombed *twice*? It seems like I've seen that plot point before...
But that's a minor issue I'm super excited to see what's next, bring on Grievous!

He's only in there for a couple seconds before Anakin slaughters him, but the Clone Wars episode is his real debut into the SW canon as he's not just a background character.

@Hard Case great review! And I 100% agree; this arc is AMAZING so far, and we're only two issues in! Heck! This might make it to my top 10 favorite issues in all of the new canon comics! The Quarzite race are completely underused and epic in every way, so seeing them in any capacity is a win in my books. Caleb and Depa's relationship is based on honesty and straightforwardness. We knew that, but still seeing the small moments of weakness in that strengthens their bond so much (and makes the first arc so much sadder because of it). I really like how TCW, Rebels, and Kanan have taken steps to show the audience that these background Jedi aren't just names and faces, but people with actual stories and histories. I want more. Anyways, amazing issue and I can't wait for the next one!

I wasn't sure about starting another comic but the reviews of the whole arc have convinced me that as soon as I can find a copy of the first arc collection I will be adding Kanan to my collection as it sound like Piffers overall quality of story is even better than both Star Wars & Vader

My condolences to all the victims of the Paris attack

Great book as always. This continues to be the best written and best illustrated comic in the new canon IMO.

    (emperor)

DO IT!! I look forward to this book more than any other right now. (Even though Vader Down might creep to the top!)

Great review, @Hard Case! This is a great issue. I love the inner workings of the Jedi Temple from the view of the younglings. I'm usually not crazy about time jumps, but I'm glad the story is moving forward and we will get a more detailed look at Kanan's role in the Clone Wars. This season of Rebels is much better than last (not that it was bad) and its nice to get some more backstory on Kanan.

I agree. I actually think though that the last episodes of season one were better than some of what we have gotten lately (although I did really enjoy the B-Wing episode). I think that as a whole though, this season will be better and there're still like 16 or so episodes to go. I think it'll pick up steam in the second half of the season especially. My main complaint is that there hasn't been a lot of Kanan lately. I understand that for the younger audience, they will be focusing on Ezra and Sabine a little more, but what I want to see is more Kanan Jarrus. :) They seem to be taking some time to set up some new story elements though, so I guess I'll listen to Yoda and exercise a little patience. But the Kanan series is where it's at right now with the comics. Vader Down #1 has been my favorite single issue of all, but that's just one issue. Kanan has been consistent throughout and I can't wait for issue #9 which comes out the day before the big premiere of TFA.

@Hard Case, do you think Kanan will have a similar experience with Grievous like Ahsoka did? She got off pretty well in their first duel, saved Rex, and only improved form there. Or will Bilaba save him?

Sorry for the late response... In the 2003 Clone Wars cartoon we see that Mace Windu injured Grievous, which is why he has his coughing fits in ROTS. But with that now being non-canon, how cool would it be if Kanan ended up being the one to injure Grievous? I don't see it being likely with him just being a padawan, but maybe he gets lucky somehow.

But he is already coughing from the first episode of TCW he is in. I think the idea now is the surgery and procedure left him like that.

You're probably right. I can't remember to be honest. He was so much cooler in tge 2003 CW cartoon. I remember being disappointed in his appearance in ROTS after watching that cartoon. He was a beast in that and then a coward in the movie.

Oh well :p We got Asajj and her wonderful arc, plus Darth Maul and Savage. Once all are out of play, kinda makes his character work as the last defense and just not as powerful.
