My response to this would be "why?"

Why would you cast a third actor in this part when we already have an actor alive and willing who has played the part before and we have established canon that force ghosts can appear as a younger version of their living self. Its much less of a hand wave to have Ewan come back than to needlessly cast a new actor.

Its not impossible, but I'm not a fan of the idea. Let something good come of the awful addition of Hayden into RotJ SE. Bring Ewan back.

    Straight to Nopelandia!

If they wanted a brief moment with ghost Obi, it would have been mo-capped into cg.

Obi-Wan did gym in the 30 years between the OT and ST. I thought this too but they could bring Ewan back and use CGI to make him older.

We all miss that crazy old wizard, the embodiment of what a Jedi should be, but I don't think so. MVS will play a pivotal role but not a long term one, maybe Sifo Diyas, maybe Bobba Fett, but his influence or tool age will be significant for other characters, in my padawan opinion. He may become a character we all love, longing for more.

I think there is a lot of reasons this won't happen. McGreggor is alive he can be aged with make up, they can mo cap Guiness' likeness, or the most significant the writer of the script could have Yoda or Anakin share the info.

I like the idea, but like everyone is saying: why not McGregor? Maybe because MvS brings much more gravitas?
Food for thought. Perhaps we will find out soon.

    No!
I think MVS will either be the VO for Darth Plaguis or the "junkyard scrap dealer" rumored to be in the wrecked AT AT, not Rey(Daisy).

MVS can't be the VO for a sith unless there is more than the one voiced by Serkis.

The rumor that Rey takes the saber to an old cyborg has been awhile for weeks and I think the cyborg was connected to MVS long before SpoilerMan "leaked it."

    NOOOOOOO!
I get that we're grasping at straws here in regards to MvS's character, but I can't even attempt to believe that JJ & friends world be that dumb/crazy/ballsy to actually try to bring back Obi-wan with some Alec Guiness look-alike hat trick.

Sheesh (or sheev) Id rather have him play Kenobi's brother than his Force Ghost.

MVS is 85...when Kenobi died 35 years before, I think his character was only supposed to be about 58 so it's more possible that he was his slightly older brother that remembers the Jedi taking his brother away from him.

But couldn't they just age Ewan like in Prometheus where they aged Guy Pearce. I think Yoda's force ghost will play a role instead. Also, it would just look weird for MVS to play him, even though MVS is a great actor. Well, he played Jesus so maybe he could pull it off.

I can't make it out but is that Obi Wan in the top right of the picture? Wild guess but maybe they're discussing the cinematography of the film here.

To me it would make sense to get an actor like Max Von Sydow to emulate Obi Wan's body language, they could go back over the face with CGI and get a voice actor who sounds like Alec Guinness, it's 100% possible to have Obi Wan convincingly star in TFA.

“He’s been buying up the film rights to dead movie stars in the hope of using computer trickery to put them all together in a movie, so you’d have Orson Welles and Barbara Stanwyck appear alongside today’s stars.”

“I’ve not been privy to any of Uncle George’s plans, but I’ve seen some amazing things done with classic movie stars by a few talented filmmakers, in terms of tests that pretty much told me, this is definitely going to become a reality for us movie-goers.”

With the exception of the two pictures with the Falcon, the pictures above it are stills from the other six movies. Like you said, they're probably talking about the cinematography methods used.

As and actor myself, I can't see why they would get someone as well accomplished as Max Von Sydow just to copy Alec Guinness's body movement. That's something I think would go to Andy Serkis if they wanted that. If MVS is Obi-Wan, I expect that they wouldn't do a lot to make him even more like AG, because he looks like him already.

Neat article, and if they did that, it looks like it would take away the need for an actor to be there. But I'm just guessing at that.

    Hope I've been a help!

This was at the bottom of the article: "UPDATE: Movieline received word from Lucasfilm that this is a “false rumor.” You mean Mel Smith lied? How is that possible?"

Also, I'll quote myself when this idea was talked about in a different thread:
