This is two theories, but they have a similiar basis so i decided to have them both on the same thread.

Theory 1: Maz Kanata was a sith apprentice... during the fall of the old republic 1000 years before the prequels she was an apprentice of a Sith Lord, after the battle of Takodona she was left behind... she made her home in the castle, and gathered supplies... providing them at a cost to scavengers who came to pick the remains of the battlefield for centuries to come... eventually people kept coming because of different reasons

Theory 2: maz is in fact... a sith lord, this delicate old woman routine is a facade and she and other sith lords are in hiding... but here is the kicker, I think if she is a Sith lord that we will come to see a different side of the sith.

That we will see the Sith and the Jedi join forces to defeat the first order and their force users... i know its hokey, but it is sometihng that will probably be seen in the movies eventually so..... meh...

Original, that's for sure. But why does she have to be a Sith? I just posted a response on your other theory, but the same thing applies here: any Sith Post-RotJ would ruin Anakin's Chosen One status, or at least the prophecy side of it.

As for her being a former Sith apprentice, that's honestly as likely a backstory for her as is her being a former Jedi or Jedi apprentice (and by this I mean it could go either way (or both ways) since we just don't know enough about Maz).

The reason I doubt either one of the theories is true is that it would seemingly undermine who Maz is and what she stands for (or, at least, it would in my mind). So could she have been a Sith apprentice? Possibly, but what good would it do to a story that's told after the fall of the Sith once and for all?

I am not saying she has too be sith, and certainly with my first theory she could have been a jedi padawan instead... and that would be just as good, but I think it personally adds a bit of a surprising edge too it.

i just want to discuss the possibilities of her having a history with the sith, specifically on that topic, within this thread.

In terms of story I think it would be a good way to have someone in the story that came back from the Dark Side and possibly contribute to Kylo Rens story, that way we can see that it is indeed possible for someone to come back from that...

and while that was in the original films, having a character who experienced redemption could provide a solid grounding for that in a way.

As for the second theory... *shruuuuuugs*

Just seems like something a writer would do without thinking it through all the way and just come off too the audience like "huh.. .yeah... thats a thing that happened"

It certainly wouldnt contribbute as much too the story as the first story would contribute that is for sure. The first theory is just a subtle thing that could be kinda cute and interesting.

Plus I like when characters like this have simple and humble backstories... the more complicated they are the more groan worthy, and deliberatly making a mystery makes it inevitably a let down whenever it finally happens.

Edit: BTW Takodona was the site of an ancient battle between the Jedi and Sith in the canon, and that is made me come up with the first (admittedly better of the two) theory.

Damn Son...Nice. I go with both. Jedi or Sith. Or at least someone that had the Force and found relicts or ways to train on her own. A Grey one...

Her castle is full of awful freaks. Read Tales From A Galaxy Far, Far Away - Aliens. That's who she keeps around.

Like Bendu or Nightsisters, she's another path that didn't go Jedi Or Sith. But she is on the light side.

Same as Snoke is supposedly not a Jedi or Sith but is on the darkside.

What I liked about TFA is they, for the first time, introduced us to a character that was talking about the Force, while not being a force user.
It showed that, though people are unable to manipulate the force themselves, they are aware of it and have there own understanding of it.
I don't like the thought though of Maz Kanata the force using pirate come bar owner. Not one bit.

Maz is a force user. She uses the force in a deleted scene and her force abilities are also confirmed in the The Force Awakens Visual Dictionary.

Original theory for sure.....but I think the bigger issue with Maz is that in TFA her character basically amounted to a failed Yoda....complete with bad CGI and no real development.

The idea of the Jedi and Sith joining forces though is rather intriguing and harkens back to the good old days of 1980's cartoons where enemies would frequently team up for a short while to defeat a common foe.

The thing is though, she isn't just a copy of Yoda. But she is Yoda + Lando.

An old friend of Han's, who provides the heroes with safe shelter within a place they own. With one person (Leia, Finn) asking Han if they can trust them. Until they're attacked by the bad guys. Sound familiar?

The creators know Yoda is too iconic to emulate, so they went with a Yoda and Lando mix.

But you would also think the Lucas Story Group would nip that in the bud if it's against Canon. But since both of us aren't strong defenders of that theory let's leave it there...

The cantina's are places dotted around the galaxy frequented by smugglers. Han is a smuggler.
If you take 5 from the letter M in Maz's name and subtract 12 from the z it spells HAN
then if you add the 12 and the 5 together, you get 17
    which is your I.Q :p
I joke of course, love your theory, keep up the good work

There are a few other things to take into account with Maz.

In the small iteration of their good guy team in TFA. Where Rey is the hero, Finn is the lancer, Chewie is the big guy, BB-8 the cute sidekick. Both Han and Maz function as team mentor and team smart guy.

You also have the first time when Rey and Maz speak to each other. That Star Wars passes the Bechdel Test.

Also there is lots of King Arthur mythology symbolized in The Force Awakens. Maz represents the Lady of the Lake (seriously her castle is right on the lake), who hands our heroes the magical sword they need.

I believe she knew of the sith ways but is not involved with them, her conversation with Rey convinced me she is on the side of the force.

That power core and fusion cutter look like two halves of a lightsabre to me. Could be just recycling props, or could it be something else?
