    You're right....I think she's a terrible human being...because she's shown it.

And I believe she Tweeted about how "shocked" she was...it wasn't some kind of rumor, and if you think for a second that she didn't know...you might come out of the darkness yourself, but do it slowly to get acclimated...the world might shock you with just how real that it is.

The 1 person i believe who can/should play Leia/Carrie 4 a brief scene is her daughter, Billie Lourd. She looks just like her mom. Put her in a wig & age makeup with a pinch of CGI & bam. U have Leia around age 60.

I think the stingiest of fanbois can live with this.

I took the freedom to change this thread's prefix from Rumor to Humor. This clickbait article is written based on a petition. I honestly have no idea why this site decided to present it that way. Too bad for them.

Sorry, I usually don’t make threads here, so I don’t know if it really constituted as “thread-worthy,” or if it was going in the right section or not, so my apologies if I messed any of that up! Thanks for fixing it. :)

OT: Let’s just hope this stays a fan petition, though. No one can play Leia except for the one and only Carrie Fisher. It seems wrong for her character to live on without the actress, so it makes sense to just kill the character off in a meaningful way that honors her legacy and will still allow her to be important to the story.

Wow, this got to be pretty polarizing for reasons I wouldn't have anticipated.

Weinstein is obviously a pile of human garbage, but let's not forget how depressingly widespread his villainy was known.

Streep is hardly unique in her unfortunate overlooking of him. I think it's fair to criticize her for that, but let's not forget that Harvey was the true face of evil in all of this.

Maryl Streep is the greatest actress of her generation, if not all time. Not sure I see her as Princess Leia though. I'd cast Jane Seymour if it were up to me.

There are people working at LFL who knew her personally and were her friends irl. They know that and they commented on that issue after her death. Her brother and daughter will decide what to do and what not. Fans shouldn't really be worried if they do something "sacrilegious".

You can't have it both ways. You can't kill her off and have her be an important part of the story. She would just be a memory. Yeah you can throw in a couple "let's win this battle for Leia!" type lines of dialogue, but that hardly makes her a central character.

No! Meryl Streep does not belong as Leia! Carrie Fisher IS Leia, have her die in between Ep 8 and 9 or in the crawl.

    I completely disagree.

Look at something like Mol in Inception, or Gerald in Gerald's Game.

    Heck, even

    Weber in Westworld.

In some cases these characters do make appearances even if their bodies are dead (which wouldn't quite work for Leia, still) but a powerful enough character would definitely be able to send ripples through the story, even in death.

    Leia is that powerful.

Want an example of how this could work? What's the end of The Last Jedi about, what are the two goals the Resistance has?

    1) To survive, to be the "spark"

    2) To contact Leia's allies and recruit them to fight the First Order

Leia's allies explicitly do not answer the call in The Last Jedi... obviously, leaving them to come into play in IX.

    Alright, alright, alright.

Regarding the link, it's just clickbait. I mean, I have always joked Meryl Streep could play Batman and get awards for it, but this is just wishful drinking from some fans.

Carrie and her were good friends. Meryl played basically a character inspired in Carrie's tumultuous life and written by Carrie in "Postcards from the edge". Meryl even finished her speech at the Golden Globes with a Carrie Fisher's quote, saying: "As my friend, the dear departed Princess Leia, said to me once, take your broken heart, make it into art".

Anyhow... regarding any potential recasting I only know one truth: I don't want to have an opinion about it. I think I just wanna trust Lucasfilm to do the best. (I know, it sounds weird based on my nickname but I daresay any potential outcome they bring for her character in Ep. IX will face criticism of some sort).

    This x1000.

If news is announced that Leia has been recast (by Streep, or anyone) I'll be slightly worried, but I will trust that it was completely necessary for the story and was a decision that was not at all made lightly.

The only reference above I am familiar with is Inception, which is not analogous to what we have here. The character you mention, even though she is dead, is actually in the movie. She plays a major role in both flashbacks and in dream state.

That won't work here. If you kill Leia, the only way she can exist in the movie is in dialogue amongst other characters (unless you replace the actress, but if you are going to do that then you may as well just keep her alive). So, like I said, you can have a few lines of dialogue stating "let's do this for the Princess!"... and you can certainly show character development regarding how various characters react to her death, but IMHO that doesn't make Leia a central character herself.

Furthermore, the characters who knew her best are kinda dead themselves. I might buy it if one of E9's themes showed us the difficulties Han and Luke had moving on after Leia's death but there's not terribly much chance of that...

Let me try again, because I'm not sure I conveyed what I meant to.

I agree, the Mal analogy isn't quite perfect because Cotillard is actually still in the film.

But even if she wasn't, Cobb's guilt would still have been one of his defining traits in the film, we just wouldn't have had a physical manifestation of it.

Yes, I'd agree that a "For the Princess!" line would be pretty minimal, but what if the references to her were not homages, but were actually experiences set in motion by Leia?

Maybe a more appropriate example, from the top of my head- the 2013 Tomb Raider game. Lara's dad is dead from before the game even starts, but his presence is felt through the entirety of the game, as Lara follows in his footsteps and learns the mystery of the island.

And I'm not sure exactly how Star Wars would go about doing this- perhaps with Leia having secret negotiations with a faction outside the Unknown Regions (the Chiss) perhaps some dealings Leia had made in the outer rim prior to her death, perhaps some other completely different thread that I can't even predict right now.

Point being, we don't need to limit ourselves by closing off the very possibility that her presence could be felt even in death. Because like I said, Leia is that powerful of a character.

I'm really against this, as it won't be the same even if they hire a great actress like Meryl Streep. If they have Force Ghost Luke come back and talk to Leia, do you think that scene will have the same power with Hamill talking to Streep? Episode 9 should pickup a few years later and they can maybe start the movie with Leia's funeral with Rey, Finn and Poe as it will be the final passing of the torch to the ST characters.

Would you be opposed to CGI Leia? I'm pretty sure Lucasfilm said no already, but they did an impressive job with CGI Tarkin. The tech is there.

I'm not a fan of a CGI Leia either. I think the Luke/Leia reunion scene in TLJ is as good as a sendoff as you're going to get so I hope they don't mess with that. Episode 9 is really about the new characters now as the Trilogy has come full circle.

There is no recasting Leia. Carrie is Leia and Leia is Carrie. It sucks but the best thing for the character is to kill her right before the events of IX and have her death serve as the catalyst of whatever the big crisis will be. Hopefully an animated series set during the time jump after TLJ and before IX can give us more great Leia stories before giving her a fitting death.
