Im loving this design. It looks more balanced, streamlined, dare I say...elegant. When Han got it he even said "I made some special modifications myself"...so to me, I kinda visualize it like those cut out hoods on classic cars (im not a car guy sorry), where they cut out holes in the hoods for supped up engines...kinda the same deal here with the falcon. Hans ditching the front part and some of the paneling for speed (I guess)..

Thats cool to me! Makes sense. Of course people are going to Vhlor about it, like everything with Star Wars. You could put out an exact 1:1 replica of the original falcon from ANH and they would still Vhlor that the paint on the starboard hatch isn't chipped in the right place or some such nonsense..

How do we explain the fact that the falcon appears in episode 3 with the forked front but is on the Solo poster without the fork?

It's an easy and justifiable retcon in my book. That minuscule appearance in RotS was a simple shake at fan service and had absolutely no meaning. YT-1300's were as common in a GFFA as a Ford F-150 is in real life.

NO! Lucas never did fan service. That's only something Disney does!

Heh, they also have the wrong dish fitted to the Falcon in the Solo film version, as it came out of the factory with a rectangular one before Han replaced it with a military grade circular one.

"After the original circular military-grade sensor dish was lost during the Battle of Endor, the dish was replaced with the base rectangular model which was originally supplied with the ship. "

What to say that Lando or Han change out the dish at some point to the circular one? Just because it an "original" dish doesn't mean that they got the falcon with that square dish? Also it's a "base" model which means there are other options. Just like you can change out stock rims in a vehicle, why can't can you have the options to change components on a ship? Who's to say that this ship is only the base model? It's a weak argument, especially we don't know any context of this film.

Because that's where cargo containers go on that type of freighter. There's at least one old making-of video out there, that I remember, that mentions this (although I cannot remember which DVD set it is on). My bet is that this particular container is the spice that Han discards when Imperials are about to board the Millennium Falcon (as per the line in A New Hope).

Same reason this isn't necessarily the Outrider anymore in the current canon.

Anyway, I'm pretty interested to see why and how the Falcon ends up with its forked front.

I really like how the spin-offs are adding a history to the series. From the Falcon to the Empire's rise, there are a ton of things that add to the mythology
