Yeah I'm sure the part between the mandibles is a detachable cargo pod, or something like that. Han did say he made some special modifications himself, so he probably changed the radar dish, ect. I beleive in ROTJ, the torpedoes came out of the space between the mandibles. So that was probably a modification, since theres no reason to have torpedoes on a cargo ship.

I think worrying about this kind of stuff is a little too much. The thing in ROTS is only an easter egg.

And the "Disney is doing this because of money" argument is getting old. Like if selling merchandise wasn't a big element during the original trilogy.

I looked at this shot as well. I think we may all be assuming the wrong thing. Just because the Falcon looks new doesn’t mean it’s not modified on this movie as well. I believe it’s been customized for speed to make the Kessel Run. The aerodynamics (pointier, flat radar dish, all coverings to reduce drag, blue markings for racing?) all point to this.

So what if THIS Falcon is modified in the front? Then when Han needs it to be more of an all around fighting ship, he continues to modify until we get the OT Falcon.

Just because it looks new doesn't mean it is new, so unless the film literally contradicts that fact with dialogue, there's nothing wrong with the Falcon being pristine after 66 years.

Could have just been cherished my Beckett and/or Lando like a classic car. After all, neither of these cars below are *new*, both are over 50 years old. The key difference is just how they've been looked after:

I agree that the part between the mandibles is likely to be a detachable pod, possibly a cargo pod converted to living quarters. The dish and blaster cannons were replaced either by Han or Lando to a "military grade" specification and if you look carefully in the trailer the cannons look more like pea shooters than the quad cannons from the OT.

If they are sticking to the Falcon being around 50+ years old by this point, I'd guess that the ship has been restored and upgraded internally as a luxury personal transport rather than a stock freighter. Either way it's good seeing it before it was modified by Lando/Han.

In RoTS, it’s just your average run-of-the-mill YT-1300 transport, not necessarily the ‘Falcon’. You can get all kinds of customizations for this model at your local Corellian Engineering Corp. dealer just around the corner.

No really, I'm not hung up on how it looks, how it got dirty, how it.........I mean it's a movie, and the Falcon is a plot device.

If the nose is an added piece for this movie, it may also be used as an attempt to disguise the ship from the Empire, Bounty Hunters, etc...

Very good point. Perhaps the tear down and modifications aren't just practical for performance but also for evading the Empire.

There is a video on Youtube I saw yesterday that shows "leaked" footage of the Falcon. The middle is actually a shipping container, because I do believe the YT's are shipping vessels. When i saw the short clip, it made sense. Plus the Falcon is just as much part of this story as any core character(Han, Chewie & the Falcon!)

Yep...and important word in my post is, "attempt", because if that was the main reason for the change, then LOL because they're being chased by a Star Destroyer and TIEs in the teaser. :D

YT-1300's are endlessly modifiable. Able to be built and rebuilt to suit any pilot's needs. Han needed a stripped down, hot-rodded smuggling vessel. Lando, I'm guessing, would want something a little more crisp and clean and sleek, so he'd most likely have it fully restored.

If the non-canon info on the YT-1300 holds up, the saucer of the Falcon is the base with the "mandibles" being a modular thing fitted to the front. The front end has merely been completely replaced from it's original to one that suits Han and Chewie's needs in the Falcon that we know.

Even so, it's an easy and justifiable retcon in my book. That minuscule appearance in RotS was a simple shake at fan service and had absolutely no meaning. YT-1300's were as common in a GFFA as a Ford F-150 is in real life.

You right on this. If I’m not totally mistaken, Ron Howard said in an interview that they wanted to show the YT-1300 as original intended – as a cargo hauler pushing around containers. That’s exactly what is rigged in between the mandibles.

What if the blast isnt the falcon at all? Maybe it is a Corellian freighter that Han piloting by some other reason. Maybe an imperial, well cared for, one?
Then later in the movie the falcon turns up and the reason Han wants it and trie to win it is because he knows those ships?
Sorry about the grammar, I hope you atleast understand my point.
