I know there's an ongoing controversy over whether he actually gave the order for that or not, but being a big JLC stan, I'm convinced he did. ;)

What a great man he was....Ok so even if he didn't, that event was such a small part of the measure of his great life. Almost killed at the Battle of Petersburg (amazing that he survived based upon the rudimentary medicine back then) then commands troops in battle with little to no military training....his stirring speech before Gettysburg to the deserters that he brought back into his unit. At Appomattox his decision to have his troops at attention and salute Gen Lee and his troops, incredibly bold decision and very moving. Then 4 time Governor of Maine and President of Bowdoin College.....

Agreed, agreed. I love reading his writings too. He can't help being a little bit OTT flowery Victorian, but stuff like this just gets me when I think of his life:

But we had with us, to keep and to care for, more than five hundred bruised bodies of men--men made in the image of God, marred by the hand of man, and must we say in the name of God? And where is the reckoning for such things? And who is answerable?... Was it God's command we heard, or His forgiveness we must forever implore?

that's it. now i have to watch it this weekend. : D

definitely the best thing about that movie. he was wonderful (the actor and the colonel).

great ~ now i gotta fight with you for him too? hahahaha
oh the poor man suffered physically ever after the war.
it breaks your heart, but it's amazing how he endured it.

he was indeed a great and noble spirit.

I've not read many but of the ones I have read, this

    One is my favorite.
It's not exactly a novel, it's the Regimental History of the real unit that I re-enacted as.

@Choose Light and @FN-3263827 Check this out. Matthew Broderick, not only did he do an awesome job portraying Shaw, but he looks so amazingly like him too!

They got the facial hair down anyway, and in a Civil War movie, that's half the battle! (That was terrible wordplay, I know.:p)

I love Gettysburg and Gods and Generals to death (my unit was in them and you can see them at various points throughout each film), but my gosh the facial hair was rubbish for most of the cast.

I would love to! I'll just need to find the time to go through the movies and give you the timing of it. Being the Irish brigade, anytime they show up onscreen, there's a pretty good chance you'll see us. :)

    Also, for the opening scene:

Minute 1:45 is my flag. :) We went as a unit to see it when the film was released, and anyone who reenacted cheered when their flag came onscreen.

    Gettysbeard. XD

it's unfortunate that the movies did poorly as it kept him from finishing the trilogy.

    Haha! Seriously!

No kidding. It would have been amazing to see The Last Full Measure. Maybe Maxwell can reboot the films with a miniseries... and Stephen Lang could play another role! Haha.

Since the Battle of Gettysburg was in 1863, and the G and G covered things from 1861 up to Chancellorsville where Jackson was shot, the last film would have covered the rest of the war, ending with Appomattox. I haven't read the book in ages so I can't recall all the details, but it would have continued to tell the stories of Lee and Chamberlain.

it would have been the Petersburg siege and then to the end of the war.
pity they didn't just finish it ~ yeah, even as a tv movie. : o (

edit: oops, Stormie beat me. : D

That would have been nice to see though as a film I don't think anything could match the impact of Gettysburg though Glory comes close.

No worries! Petersburg is important and I didn't mention that! Haha.
They are all great movies in their own way. :)
