Hahaha... see, now this is probably some epic and really cool moment in the show. But I'm just sitting here like, "wtf??"

I can't tell if you've helped or hurt the case for cartoons. :D

Here's my simple take, on how to to do an animated series not aimed toward kids: Write it and direct it as if it were meant to be live action. Don't have goofy stunts or cheesy superfluous action sequences that can only be pulled off through animation. And yeah, I know the current state of CGI blurs that line even more. But, case in point, I'm sorry but i just can't imagine a scenario where something like the above scene would work on the big screen. Some context might help its cause but.... I don't know. Maybe this isn't necessarily even the problem, but the attitude of "We can do whatever we want, it's animated!" is really a double-edged sword. With great power comes great responsibility....:)

Again, remember the demographic. This is on Disney XD; a kids network first and foremost. Its gotta look weird.

Which is my original point. If we have a cartoon on streaming, rather than on a *kids network*, perhaps we could get away from the goofy cartoon-only stuff and embrace the tone of the films. Just as fun for kids but fully accessible to adults.

That's exactly what I was trying to illustrate (heh, heh..) as well.

I have no problem with Disney owning Star Wars now... quite the opposite actually, I love what they've done with it so far and have planned for the future. But from the little I've seen from Rebels, the animation aspect of it has almost become too Disney-fied. Forces of Destiny takes it even further, but that is obviously geared even more towards kids.

Am I putting things under the microscope and getting too picky now? Probably. But, I am a Star Wars fan, after all. :D

@DarthSnow I know it's a common misconception, but I'd encourage you to challenge your view that "cartoons are for kids." There's a lot of really good animation out there- Death Note, for example, works far better as an anime than it does in Netflix's new movie. Avatar: The Last Airbender also thrives in animation, while it heavily failed in live action.

Kubo and the Two Strings won my wife over last year, and she also used to think animation was a childish medium.

I wouldn't necessarily say Rebels is a good animation, but it's fun, and I think a Star Wars fan such as yourself could appreciate it given the chance. :)

    i can totally appreciate this.

i refused to watch the Clone Wars because i hated the animation and just thought it was mindless goofy stunts and superfluous action.
and it was, about 70% of the time. but the other 30% was really worth it in a big way.

i'd say Rebels is a complete flip to 30%-70% in favor of non-cheese, which is a huge improvement. again, i refused to watch it at first, but eventually i got curious enough and i feel like it was time well spent. and yes, i did now and then fast-forward some action sequences because no one has this much time on their hands ~ hahahaha

and the space whales are epic. and also a little wtf, but that's okay. XD

Those 5 to 15 min shorts turned me off as a kid. It felt like a tease to me so I never got invested in the this version of the Clone Wars.

Oh trust me, no one is more disappointed in me than my own self for falling into that trap! I mean I still enjoy animated shows, but at the same time I always sort of attribute that to my inner child (who, try as I might, often gets the better of me.) :)

I just think I haven't found my "Kubo" yet -- That one specifically is a film I've been wanting to see for awhile now. When I get around to watching it, I'll be sure to get back to you!

I absolutely will be giving it the chance it deserves. I had the first two seasons sitting in my Amazon cart, until bigger and better things came about. I've stayed spoiler-free (mostly) and know that if I'm going to stay that way, I need to get to it sooner rather than later.

Truth be told, I'd already have been into Rebels if it was on a channel that I actually got, or I did have the ability to stream it through something like Netflix.

Who couldn't use a little more epic/wtf in their life?? :D

    Enjoy!

And yes, absolutely let me know your thoughts! :)

That's more than fair. Disney XD is so inaccessible, without cable. I know that personally, I may have... subverted traditional means to watch it. If there had been any alternative, I would have easily taken it.

Or you could be like me and let Amazon scalpel you to death and buy the whole season

Star Wars has always been for kids since its inception, it was specifically created for them, its creator has often made that statement too.

Yes, there are gory and bloody bits in it, but kids back in the day weren't like the sheltered little safespace snowflakes that exist now, who have probably never played outdoors unsupervised, never climbed a tree, swam in a river, scraped a knee from a tumble, or fallen off a bike.

The kids of the 70s and 80s loved the gore, they watched it alone or with parents. A bit of spilled blood and violence was just exciting and just make-believe fun for them. They knew that.

I think it depends on what exactly they're trying to do. The anime/manga-to-live action is...weird IMO

I partially agree with you here. Death Note has three other live action movies, and I've seen the first two of those. I was a fan of those despite HATING Death Note for most of it's manga run and absolutely refusing to watch the anime (my best friend loves it though). I never saw the third one, since it apparently retcons the first two.

The Netflix movie tries to adapt something from another culture, with that culture's mindset into an American equivalent, and it didn't fully work. The concept itself was fine and works in both settings; but the cultural language was lost.

But to add to your examples, Attack on Titan is the same. It looks awesome as an anime but utterly fails in live action.

But on the other hand, you've got Rurouni Kenshin, which works great as manga, anime, and a movie trilogy. But that's rare to do...

I 100% AGREE WITH YOU HERE.

Also @DarthSnow if we're adding cartoon recommendations, you might find Voltron: Legendary Defender on Netflix to be up your alley. If I had to choose a studio/production group to be in charge of a new Star Wars show, it'd be these peeps.

I have high hopes for this new Disney Streaming service launching next year.

They appear to be putting some $ into creating quality content. For example, there will be a CGI weekly show of Monsters, Inc (Pixar doesn’t go cheap.) And the Lady and the Tramp live action sequel and holiday feature “Nicole” are being pulled from Disney’s theatrical roster and joining this streaming launch.
The live action Star Wars series? Let us hope Disney puts as much effort into this as their ABC Marvel tv shows.
