I actually read this as, "Damn, I can't just ignore this nuisance and go on with my smuggling like I'd planned." :p

I definitely think this is true.

Ok... I don't think I fully agree, but just because she didn't seem exactly the same doesn't mean she should be killed off. What if Mark Hamill's performance of Luke in VIII is lackluster? Should he die? No, not unless the story is created with that goal in mind, and it will have to be written well and make sense.

But I would agree with Ford's performance. I think TFA was probably the best movie involving Han.

ha! could be partly that too. but i think it's definitely more to do with invoking his brother-in-law.

I agree with what you are saying. I don't think you kill her off because the performance wasn't top notch. I just think that within that story you had 2 choices to deliver that needed emotional fire power and they picked the character that was played by an actor that was still delivering at the highest level. The story will probably evolve such that you are proven right, but inside the vacuum of TFA I wish it had been Leia instead. I guess all I am saying is that I would have been more excited to see Han in VIII than I am about seeing Leia.

Ah, I see. It would have been nice to have seen Han survive and be around for the rest of the trilogy, but that would mean TFA would need some story tweaking either to accommodate him not dying, or make Leia's death more emotional and prominent.

I honestly don't think the fans would have mourned her death as much as Han's but it would have made Harrison's role MUCH juicier .

Same here. Stop messing with Leia - she's had enough the freaking entire saga to wish her dead. As much as I did grieve over Han's death, I can see your point - and it is actually a trend for the saga having the Skywalkers survive rather than their consorts (Padme, anyone?).

awww man, we're like one slave Leia joke away from this turning into something real bad.

clearly there's a lesson here about tangling romantically with Skywalkers. another reason why i hope Luke didn't father Rey ~ hahaha

I know! Poor lady who got into Luke... if it happened. Still wishing Rey has a different tie with the Skywalkers if any.

I didn't get the impression that Han seemed resentful when Luke's name was mentioned. He actually seemed a bit nostalgic to me.

And I'm sure Han and Lei blame themselves more than anyone for what happened to Ben

that's an interesting observation. "Yeah, I knew Luke". Or Luke's fate and failure is just very very tragic for Han because his son was involved.

Definitely a heavy tragedy if we consider the ties between them from the OT. Han would look Luke sort of like a little brother ("Great, kid!") and then a close friend, then a brother-in-law.

Even a sort of mentor to Luke. And the fact that he says "I knew" also mystifies the character of Luke. Is he no longer himself? Is the old Luke gone? Does Han presume him lost forever? Even dead?

It might've had a slightly lesser impact on fans, but it would wreak havoc on the Rebellion.

sort of like his "i used to be" when Rey asks if he's Han Solo.

there's a theme of identity / denial / the inescapability of self throughout the film.

I like that theory, where Han did not go back to his smuggler way, and instead was keeping a tab on Rey at the behest of Luke.

exactly and that theme ties in very wel with that of belonging. You have many form of displacement in this movie: identity, spatial, relational and yes even the 'Self'.

And we would definitely miss Carrie Fisher and her dog Gary at the press conferences lol. I mean, we'll definitely miss Harrison Ford, but she's funnier lol.

i can't think that as a possibility. hiding one's kids in the galaxy didn't really work so well the last time; i can hardly see them inflicting that on their own.

aside from which, if you were going to hide your kid, seems like you'd hide them in a nice place. not a junkyard with a slavedriver.

i'm starting to wobble a bit on Rey's abandonment on Jakku being Ben's doing, but he still is the only one who would make such a mess of it.

Yes, it's not like leaving a kid under the care of relatives. (Like Luke and Harry Potter lol).
