@MandoChip - the album is a little belter isn't it! I've had it on repeat since it arrived on Friday.

    Love this track too!

    Hey all,

So, I'm looking for new rock music to get into and would like some recommendations, please :) I pretty much stopped listening to new bands in the late 90s and am in desperate need for something new. Recently, I discovered Larkin Poe, who are great! But I want more :)

I like most sub-genres of rock, but am not a metal guy. I tend to favor emotional stuff over mind-blowing technical musicianship. Dark and weird concepts are great, or, barring that, music with much pathos. Roughness is good, as are ballads. And finally, recommendations must be of bands/acts of the current millennium (i.e. active now); I don’t need to get hooked on yet another brilliant 70s band, thank you very much ;)

So, if YOU have a contemporary rock love to share, then please do :D

    Much obliged

I'll just list a bunch of my favourite (currently active) rock bands. Hope you find something that you like, @Angelman :)

Deftones, Arctic Monkeys, Alice in Chains, Tame Impala, Queens of the stone age, RHCP, Smashing Pumpkins, TOOL, Khruangbin, Royal Blood, Biffy Clyro, The Oh Sees.

I'd second @MandoChip's suggestion of Tame Impala and Royal Blood.
Others from the past 20yrs which could be worth a go...

    Slaves

    Jehnny Beth

or Savages (the band she fronts)

Arcade Fire (Bowie features on this track, so you'll probably dig it)

    Sigur Ros

...and although I'm not sure if it'll be 'rock' enough, I'd recommend Lanterns on the Lake

    Than's, mate! :D

Oh, man; Slaves is pretty great :D BluesPunkRock!

Jehnny Beth, too! That sure was weird enough, with some nice poprock sensibilities. I like it!
+Savages… Yep, I’m into Jehnny Beth :D Will buy into her/their discography for sure.

Arcade Fire I knew (but had forgotten) about. Haven’t listen to them that much, but found them through db back in the day :p

Sigur Ros, of course. Interesting Scandi weirdness ;) (“Brennisteinn” means “firestone”, btw. Icelandic is sometimes quite similar to my local/father tongue dialect of Norwegian, heh heh. Probably a reference to brimstone, I’d guess). This song reminds me of some Julee Cruise stuff off Twin Peaks/Fire Walk With Me.

Lanterns on the Lake is completely new to me. Absolutely rock :)

@Angelman - if you like Slaves, check out their track ‘Where’s your car Debbie?’ too... I love the riff on that.

Lanterns on the Lake are a big personal favourite of mine too - their guitarist Paul Gregory does a lot of production now too, but I’m a fan of his guitar played with a bow stuff (similar to Sigur Ros I guess)

One other band I should have suggested was Snapped Ankles!

Well, sir - you have some interesting music to catch up on.

I might post more later, but that'll do.

    Part 2 for @Angelman

(don't bother looking for this band - it was a one-off made up group for a cartoon series)

    Which...reminds me.
This happened while you weren't looking.

And since we're in a zany mode at the moment, I'll end with something that's not rock at all, but it'll "Boosh the mind"*

*It's called "Booshing the mind" after the effect that "The Mighty Boosh" causes where once you've seen that, a whole new spot in your brain is made that just didn't exist before.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

Most of those aren't exactly new, but there are some real gems there! :D

That disturbed cover of The Song of Silence I listen to regularly, and I'm still sad the White Stripes ain't no more...

    I'll give your rocker a listen tomorrow, @Jayson. (I'm watching a brilliant Zombie flick atm ;) ).

No, they aren't new. Just anything within the past 20 years.
    Let's see...what else...

    @Angelman
    Part 3

And one not many know, sort of on the folk side of rock....somewhat country, but the country more linked to the good old Johnny Cash thread of the genre.

Some of his other stuff is interesting. Some is very country, but quite a bit is very old American folk influenced (think, O Brother, Where Art Thou).

Then there's this one, from another guy who mostly does stuff that's just way too country for me, but this one song is so interesting because it's just .... what the f**k? Spinning and fusing things together...

It's like someone smashed jug band, blues-folk, country, AC/DC's song Thunderstruck, Beck's song Loser, late 60's American psychedelic meditation music, and Nirvana's song Radio Friendly Unit Shifter into a blender and flipped the switch.

Just...weird, but buttery at the same time. I don't know why it exists, but I'll take it!

    Cheers,
    Jayson

And this one, which, yeah, yeah...I don't care. F*** it, man. I love it anyway!

    Tuesday recommendation for @Angelman

Bob Log III... He’s a one man band delta blues rock guitar party man. He only appears on stage in a human cannonball suit, wearing an ex-USAF pilots helmet with a telephone receiver wired into it as a mike.

I first saw him at a festival where he played while crowd surfing in a rubber dinghy. The crowd always buys him drinks and last time he played here (2019) he said he wanted to toast the fans... so brought out a toaster and a loaf, making toast between songs.

He’s potentially a mad man and without doubt one of the most memorable and individual people I’ve ever been to see.

Love this one. I don't know much of his entire portfolio, but this particular song is on my regular playlist.

Also, allow me to stamp a heart "endorsed" on Lonely Boy by the Black Keys.

But back to folk rock. I love Todd Snider something fierce:

....you know what, just listen to the whole album. Dude is an excellent singer / storyteller.
