Ya, there is a niggle here, and a niggle there, but when I left the theatre, I felt something truly special. So many great moments overcome most of the negativity for me.

Well.... ESB got a fair share of crap when it was released back in the day so I am confident TLJ will be regarded in the same way in the future.

It has nothing to do with being different. In fact, the only thing I liked in the movie were the different style shots that RJ threw out such as the mirror scene with Rey. The problem is the movie is just bad and doesn't develop any of the characters where you care what happens in Epsiode 9. The main villain is killed easier then Boba Fett, the Rey/Kylo/Snoke scene is LITERALLY straight out of ROTJ!

Then you have the eye rolling moments: Leia flying like General Zod, Kylo Ren shirtless like this is an episode of Dawsons Creek, The beginning part where Poe puts General Hux on Hold is something you would see in Spaceballs, Luke Skywalker doing Neo like he was in the Matrix, I could go on an on.

Just remember Mark Hamill said back in May, "I fundamentally disagree with 100% of where RJ is taking Luke Skywalker." He warned us all!

Fact is, the movie is pure genius. If people would have the slightest understanding of how movie-making and storytelling works they would see. But I also said this for TFA: I seriously think Lucasfilm has overestimated the intelligence of its audience. The critics rave it, the audience - the US audience in particular - destroy it. The latter critiques it as if it were a superhero movie. They don't understand that the theme of the movie is:

MEETING YOUR HEROES MIGHT LEAD TO DISILLUSION. THEY ARE NOT THE PEOPLE YOU IMAGINE THEM TO BE
    Rose with Finn
    Rey with Luke
    Poe with Holdo

The audience reacts the same way as Rey would to first meeting Luke. But unfortunately the audience is not so smart enough to realize that it is intentional. They also completely overlook the fact that those HEROES end up being exactly as they had always imagined them, at the END OF THE MOVIE.

Finn becomes a true hero, willing to sacrifice himself - previously an alleged coward/traitor
Holdo rams the supremacy and sacrifices herself - previously an alleged coward/traitor
Luke saves everyone, and ends up being Luke as we imagined him - previously a reluctant recluse

The fact that Luke acts pretty crazy in the first scenes of TFA, with the milking and the fishing, throwing away the sabre etc. is all quite similar to this:

LUKE meets YODA, but YODA isn't the GREAT JEDI MASTER who he though he would be. He talks funny and is a total nutcrack when Luke first meets him. He is small and talks funny. But in the END he ends up being just as WISE and POWERFUL as LUKE imagined him to be. In THE LAST JEDI we see the exact same structure, but now taking on epic proportions. Whereas Yoda stayed 'disinterested' in joining the fight of the Rebellion, LUKE actually SAVES THE RESISTANCE

Shouldn't be surprised you put up this great post. Excellent post.
I will add the help of a song:

"Your heroes turn out to be assholes
And the light in the tunnel that you're chasing is a train
The singer's in key the guitars in tune
But the song is still slipping away "

I'm so proud the movie has managed to acquire such an overwelmingly positive reception by critics. I completely agree with those reviews. But I'm also quite disappointed and surprised that many fans really are no longer capable of 'seeing' and 'reading' what is right in front of their very noses. I'm also very disappointed that.....at least on the internet.....it is very difficult just to share thoughts about the movie in a normal fashion. Its themes, plots, tropes, motifs, its references, its cinematography its acting, characters, layers, writing and dialogue, that's the stuff I like to discuss. Instead what I'm confronted with is a red hot and fuming horde of rabit Star Wars fans whose primary interest is bashing a movie because Luke did some strange stuff in the first act and is as such 'NOT AS THEY IMAGINED HIM TO BE'. Which is annoying, but also remarkably funny, in some respects.

He also said that in the end he was extremely satisfied how it all worked out and a bit ashamed that he did not trust Rian Johnson's direction in the first place. He also said that the movie is the best Star Wars movie since Empire Strikes Back, which funnily enough, according to the critics, it is. You failed to mention that, but a person can be wrong at times.

You can't talk about anything now. Good that is...the Finn thread is a perfect example. No matter how much you show positive light from TFA on through TLJ of Finn it gets met with some Kylo fury.

I wish I had some Forceskype to try and help redeem them.

I'm not suggesting everyone who doesn't like it is a Scum, just that there are undoubtedly a lot of whiners who have subconsciously set themselves up to find fault in all things star wars ever since they heard their first line of gungan basic 18 years ago. In their case... It may be winter but it sure smells like summers eve!

I couldn't imagine Luke going out any other way though. I always expected the Obi-Wan or a blaze of glory but neither felt "Luke"
Luke winning by outsmarting Kylo and showing off immense power and restraint simultaneously is pure Luke. Going in peace after saving the rebels AGAIN.
That is Luke Skywalker. He didn't win with violence in ROTJ. He won by putting his weapons down and appealing to the greater good in Vader. He won not by raising a weapon against Kylo but by doing what needed done to save the rebellion. Beautifully done.

Don't even acknowledge Twitter. Just don't. To all Twitter users: "Your mom just texted you. Your pizza rolls are ready"

Seriously. That is how much I think of the Twitterverse. "It's 5pm eastern time honey!! Time to get out of bed and do your UberLyft thing"

Say that to VIII. It essentially undid everything TFA set up.
