saw R1 last night and i have to say, it wasn't the best Star Wars movie i've seen. it wasn't awful, i did enjoy it, but it was definitely not one of the best. if i had to rank it against the saga episodes best to worst it would be something like: ep 5, ep 6, ep 4, ep 7, ep 3, R1, ep 1, ep 2.

firstly, the music annoyed me. when they flash the Rogue One title up they start what sounds like the traditional Star Wars theme, but then it falls on its face. i don't understand why they didn't use the OG theme during this moment; they use it at other points in the film, so why they dropped it here is beyond me.

i liked the characters, they were all pretty classic. the random cameos were fun too, nothing too cheesy or forced. although, having said that, the CGI was a little weird and unsettling, almost like you're watching a video game character crammed into a live action movie.

speaking of cheesy and forced, Darth Vader delivers a pun. you read that right, the Dark Lord of the Sith makes a pun.

other than that one line, Vader is in pretty good form, albeit for not nearly enough time. i could have done for a lot more Vader screen time, but ho hum.

the beginning sort of drags on and the end comes up all of a sudden, so the pacing is a bit weird. they did manage to tie in some cool story threads, one that explains stuff in the OT and one that hints at some stuff in the ST.

if anyone has specific questions on the film i'm happy to answer with a spoiler tag on it; otherwise i tried to keep this spoiler free.
