Yeah, the Y-wings are bombers. You’d figure they’d just drop their payload at the right angle and velocity to let the DS gravity do the rest. But they specifically refer to using torpedoes in the briefing so that’s kinda out.
A lot of the tertiary fun for me is finding the flaws and oddities of this universe and coming up with practical (or impractical) ways of explaining them away. Not because I need to desperately rationalize the verisimilitude of a children’s fantasy movie to myself, but because I find it enjoyable to play in this crazy sandbox George made for us.

If I remember correctly, that exhaust port is said by the rebel council to be very very small, 2meters x 2meters.
To small for a droïd ?

R2 was deeply modified/updated/improved by Anakin, and the booster rockets are part of that improvement. This is said in Matthew Stovers's novelization "REVENGE OF THE SITH".

perhaps not disintegrated, but surely its electronics would have burnt due to the shield, making the droid unefficient ?

    Excellent point.

mmmmh, do you mean: like sound in space (sonic bomb in ep 2) or light rays who cross and chock ?

I’m an ignorant American, so can’t speak with great authority on the metric system. I understood that 1 meter is a little over 3 feet. So 2 meters would be well over 6 feet. That should be more than enough room for any R2 unit I’d think.
No film novelizations before TFA are canon though. So hard to say whether that’s the actual case nowadays or not.
Yeah, this is what I’m hanging my hat on: the ray-shielding. I’m sure there’s numerous ways to explain how it could stop a droid but not a torpedo.

"ignorant " is waaaay too much ! sorry for having employed a metric system... I'm an arrogant frenchie ;)

I'd rather think the same like you, in a quiet world, slowly "rolling" to the hole, carefully targeting, and then jump in with a "blip"...
... but when ejected from an X-Wing pursued by 3 TIE, x meters (I beg your pardon: x feet) high, flying at y miles per hour, makes me feel the target suddenly becomes waaaaaay smaller :)

For the sake of accuracy, it’s a pretty decent stretch before those TIEs show up though. Apparently the Rebel fighters were too small to target with turbo-lasers. A droid is even smaller. An X-wing could have conceivably ejected its R2 close enough to the port for inertia to carry it most of the way, then maneuver with its thrusters for the rest.

It’s doable is all I’m really saying.
