It's the Naval Station Validusia: The pic is from it's Wookieepedia article, the station seems to be originating from the book The Essential Guide to Warfare.

Maybe some older, but none the less nice background about the U-Wing. As per Doug Chiang, they designed nearly 800 different drafts before they could single out the now used one.

I really like some of them:

I really wish Star Wars VII had used Doug Chiang's work as a starting point as opposed to rummaging through unused McQuarrie art. Chiang's work still has that Star Wars feel without looking "exactly" like standard Star Wars. And that's where this universe should have been 30 years after the battle of Endor.

For Rogue One, it works better. However, I still find it a bit odd how we're seeing these brilliantly-designed ships like the Tie Striker that are more futuristic and inventive than the stuff used by the First Order many years later. But I will admit the U Wing fits nicely.

I absolutely agree. The first Order should have been using for example a next step fighter type succeeding the TIE Interceptor, not step back in design history.

For the TIE Striker, I’m still not convinced that this design will prevail. Possibly just being better suited for atmosphere dog-fights isn’t enough to justify a whole new production series getting past proto-type status. As far of what have understood from the (toy) designs so far, is that they have an extend cargo space in the back of the prolonged pod. No special functions such as a pivoting quad laser turret in the back for ground strafing runs (also a Doug Chiang design for TFA!).

But so far for the new trailer, aaah, the nostalgia!

By the Force, why have I not browsed this thread sooner? It's brilliant!

(And I know this sounds like a classic spambot message :p - but yes, the vehicles and vehicle comparisons are fascinating.)

I almost wonder if those circular things are linear accelerators, to move material from the surface up to the assembly site.

My first thought was the circle thing is the upstream end of a space elevator. It's hard to see what that brown rectangular thing in the middle is, when the shot isn't straight on (end of above clip) it looks to have something grey hooked on below it.

By the roundishness I assume it’s of Calamari design.

This was also speculated by @Rieekan a page before. :)

All in all, I find this new structure with the ISD “nose” Dockings quite intriguing. And it really looks like a big cargo crate that’ s floating in the middle section. The whole thing seems to be a gate for the planetary shield, so that ships can pass without shutting the whole shield down for that procedure. Smart.

Meanwhile, I’m quite confident that this is a cargo transport in the center, hauling one huge orange container.

    SpaceBattle_03a.jpg

If I’m not mistaken, the structure contains lots of hangar bays around the ring with swarms of TIE’s waiting to overwhelm any enemy craft with sheer numbers.

I wonder if the team leaves Yavin with permission to do so. From how the pictures are selected and the facial expressions from the team members, one could get the impression that they are not authorized by alliance command to go.

I've said something similar (might have been on another thread) about how the team goes to rescue jyn when the alliance tells them not to bother with it now that they've gotten theyre information...I mean, the shield base thing might even be where she's held instead of the death star, who know..

Cool observations, I think you're probably right. However, that orbital facility appears to have two docking "pits" for Star Destroyers (matching the bow of one of these), yet the Star Destroyer in the image doesn't seem to be docked (well, he shouldn't and instead get ready for action, perhaps the ship is rising to deal with the larger Rebel ships...)

    ??????

    star-wars6-movie-screencaps_com-13078.jpg

Actually, that's been my whole point for many, many years, i.e. we never saw the 'Rebel (Star)Cruiser' (official designation in the original ESB materials) as a medical vehicle in the final film (merely its sickbay in ESB). IMHO, it's a big misinterpretation based on re-edits that occurred during the making of ROJ. Looks I should assemble a visual comparison of the original screenplay sequence and images compared to the final edit of the space battle in ROJ. ;)

So do I, but I'm afraid it will remain forever the "Medical Frigate" because of that editing change in the final cut of ROJ:

Great background info indeed @Lt. Hija!

I hope this time, the capital ships are not just to providing nice background scenery, but will join the battle too.

The new featurette brought some nice impressions with it vehicles-wise:
