Last week, we learned the full story Colin Trevorrow had planned for his original vision of Episode IX: Duel of the Fates. Today, we're getting another glimpse behind that curtain as concept art from Trevorrow's time on the project has leaked, offering a small glimpse at what his story might have looked like.

The concept art comes courtesy of the Star Wars Leaks Reddit, and appears to cover all of the major story beats. Obviously, this is just a small glimpse of how things might have looked. The incredible Art of books show just how much concepts can evolve on their journey to the screen. This artwork is based on the first draft of the script, written before Carrie Fisher passed away. But it's always fun to get a peak behind the scenes and look at some of the incredible artwork produced in the making of these movies.

Going in roughly story order, the first piece, pictured above, shows Rey with her new double bladed lightsaber on the bridge of a Star Destroyer. This is likely based on the Resistance heroes' escape from the Kuat shipyards that was to open the movie. Rey's outfit here is very different from what she wore in The Rise of Skywalker, instead heavily influenced by Luke's look in Return of the Jedi.

The next image shows occupied Coruscant, the skyline of the city planet in the shadow of the gigantic First Order capital ship that looms overhead.

This is followed by an image showing a lightsaber guillotine execution of what looks to be a Resistance pilot. In the script this was to be Bisc Kova, a traitor who helped the Resistance steal the Star Destroyer from Kuat. And is that meant to be Phasma? She wasn't mentioned in the script breakdown but that could be chrome armor and the repair on the helmet would match the damage from The Last Jedi.

Ahead of her next mission, Rey continues her Jedi training under the guidance of Luke Skywalker. In the story breakdown, Luke's Force-ghost both continued Rey's training and attempted to turn Kylo Ren back towards the light.

On Remnicore, Kylo Ren found a different teacher. Tor Valum. An ancient Sith teacher who taught him how to drain the Living Force from others.

Whilst on Coruscant Finn, Rose, R2-D2, and C-3PO traveled through the lower levels on their journey to the old Jedi Temple. Here they saw how the First Order had turned the people of Coruscant into scavengers struggling to survive and ready to rise up against their oppressors.

Kylo Ren was to confront his own version of the Dagobah cave, a duel with an apparition of Darth Vader. It was a battle he would lose.

On the other side of the galaxy, Rey, Poe, Chewbacca, and BB-8 arrived on Bonadan seeking a seer to help Rey discover her path. Interestingly the concept art leak notes that Poe used to live here with his grandfather.

Under the Jedi Temple the Resistance team is successful in lighting the Force beacon and sending out Leia's call for aid to the galaxy.

On Bonadan, the Knights of Ren chase Rey and Poe in the Knife 9. The heroes take to the water in a Razor Sail as they attempt to escape. The chase sequence was to culminate in a fight between Rey and the Knights.

On Coruscant, Finn helps to inspire an uprising by those oppressed by the First Order, including former Stormtroopers.

Star Wars Leaks thinks this piece might how the Coruscant underground, but in the story breakdown it was mentioned that the Resistance repaint the walkers and war machines they find in the stolen Star Destroyer. Based on that, and what looks to be a Resistance pilot at the front of the image, I believe this to be the Resistance preparing for the battle of Coruscant.

Star Wars Leaks labels this piece as Rey confronting a monster outside the forest of Mortis. This scene wasn't mentioned in the breakdown so presumably this takes place just before she scales the mountain.

On Coruscant, First Order Stormtroopers prepare to face off with the uprising. You can see the Stormtroopers in the trench are First Order whilst those above have removed their helmets and joined the Resistance.

The people of Coruscant cheer the repainted walkers as they prepare to take on the might of the First Order.

Rey duels Kylo Ren on Mortis. This image offers our best look at how Kylo Ren would have appeared in this film, including the Mandalorian helmet smelted to his face.

The moment that would have broken everyone's heart. C-3PO mourns the destruction of R2-D2 in the battle of Coruscant.

Luke confronts his fallen apprentice, catching his lightsaber blade with his bare hand. I can picture this being the 'You are no Skywalker' moment.

With defeat inevitable, Chancellor Hux uses a lightsaber from his collection to commit suicide. In the breakdown the lightsaber was to be purple.

And finally, Leia with BB-8. It's likely this piece is from earlier in the movie, with Leia recording her message to the galaxy. But it nicely mirrors her first scene in A New Hope, a scene that was to be recreated at the end of Duel of the Fates, so I felt that this would be a nice image to end on.

So there you have it. Be sure to share your thoughts on the art work in the comments below and in the Cantina.

    1. It's hilarious that pic of Luke grabbing the sabre actually includes a lens flare :D

    2. Strange that the script that purportedly featured Leia so prominently had so few depictions of her. Not that this is all that there is of course.

    3. Like all SW concept art, it's so pretty. Such talent over at Lucasfilm. Do we know who should be credited?

Despite the story problems in the "script", it is way more in line with what we got before in the ST and has a lot of callbacks to the previous movies. (not just the OT, but also the PT and CW)
Also it was a draft, not the finished shooting script.

But I dont know if Trevorrow would have executed it better than JJ, since JJ is a good director (shitty writer tho), but the story of this draft alone would have been so much better than the movie Terrio and JJ wrote.
Trevorrow aint a bad director tho, besides JW1 which I enjoyed a lot, he did Safety Not Guaranteed (written and directed) which I consider a freaking great movie.

If this is real, which it appears to be given the fact that SWNN is reporting on it, I have a couple of weird feelings:

First and foremost, I always found concept art to be interesting, but never pivotal to understanding a movie. I mean this in the sense what when MCU or Solo or TFA concept art came out, I looked at it and always thought "so that's ALWAYS how they planned it!" or "it's interesting to see how it changed so much from conception," or "that's cool, why did they leave it out?" But it NEVER ONCE changed how I viewed the movie I watched.

The leaked concept art for TROS...did. Certain ideas looked so much cooler, or would have helped the movie out a little more IMO had they made it from concept to cinema. And now these leaks (if this is real) happen, and I'm left with that feeling all over again. The FO ship looks stunning, Rey's lightsaber is pretty much fan fulfillment in the best way, Luke coming back to haunt Kylo is AWESOME, and Finn seemingly does more than yell the entire movie (even if he's not F.S, but for a better arc it's a trade I'm willing to take). AND ROSE DOES STUFF!

I didn't like all of the concept stuff in Trevorrow's script, nor do I like him as a director* but now a larger part of me wishes to see the movie he would have made.

*To be fair, the only movie I've seen by him is Jurassic World, and since I hadn't finished Jurassic Park or any of the sequels before seeing it, I didn't care about anything. It was a spectacle of a movie, but not a very deep or emotional one.

    Safety Not Guaranteed is amazing.
Makes me think time travel was intended to be in the new trilogy at some point.

Abrams - Star Trek had it
    Johnson - Looper
    Trevorrow - Safety Not Guaranteed.

All I can say about the stuff from Trevorrow's leaks is this: It seems like it would have at least been interesting, which is one of my biggest issues with TROS, I felt disinterested for much of it. Even if it wasn't as good as TROS, I feel like it would have been interesting.

Canto Bight is an obvious hang up for a lot of people in TLJ (it's only 15 minutes of screen time tops IIRC). Despite that I appreciate it for being a big swing by Johnson. He gave us the most prequel era thing the ST had to offer.

It would've been a fun reference to this. In which Luke basically looks the father to.

That was my first thought when I read the outline. How could the absence of Leia be an issue with that story. For that story to work she is pretty unnecessary.

I can't help, but after reading the breakdown and seeing the concept arts I have to say- I probably would have liked Colin's version of EPIX much more. It was something new and original, but it still feels like Star Wars.
Yes, I would have changed some minor things like a redemption for Kylo Ren.

Being someone who was extremely devastated by the overall movie that is TROS, the leaked DOTF script was an absolute blessing.

That leak, complimented by these concept art images, has completely rekindled my passionate love for this GFFA.

All I can think about now is this movie.

Even if this is all we ever get, I am eternally thankful!

    Here's what should happen though...

Disney/LucasFilm should bring back Colin Trevorrow to make this movie. Have him update his original script to take into consideration more carefully all the events of TLJ (i.e. Luke dying, etc.), along with the failures of TROS, while at the same time keeping it as close as possible to his first draft.

The only major changes I would suggest The Mouse dictate:

-Replace Tor Valum with a ghost/phantom version of Darth Sidious who is attempting to regain his physical form. Be more creative with his return.
-Ben Solo is redeemed, and he survives the final fight... only to exile himself on Ahch-To in the last scene as Rey flies away in the Millennium Falcon.

As for Carrie Fisher passing, and the role of General Leia... technology! I honestly do not care how it gets done, use everything you have at your disposal...

Motion-capture/CGI, body-doubles/lookalikes, unused footage, or a combination of all the above. The memory of Carrie Fisher lives on most efficiently through the visualization of her corporeal form by others. The best way to honor her memory in this case would be to create for her the finest quality digital representation ever seen on screen, as opposed to doing her a disservice by limiting the time and involvement her character has in the story/movie.

This isn't even anything new! It was done at the end of R1, and a great amount of fans thoroughly enjoy that movie, regardless of their personal opinions towards that particular scene. We've come a long way since then as well, Supreme Leader Snoke in TLJ is proof of that. If a dedicated group of creatives/animators put that same sort of love and care into her digital performance for DOTF, I just know that it would turn out beautifully!

So... yeah. They should do that! Bet on it. Make two versions of Star Wars: Episode IX, put them both in theaters and let the people decide which one wins. The loser gets branded officially as 'Legends' from that point forward. It also gives the 'Duel Of The Fates' title dual meanings... Super meta!

That would literally be the greatest motion-picture duel in the history of mankind... I sure know where I'd put my money!

Art can be very different to script. I know it's not going to happen as it would be impossible but let's just say we got Treverrow's movie but then compared the art work of TRoS we could be in the situation of wanting to see the JJ film. The death star sea wreckage, Kijmi, Rey healing the Snake, her yellow lightsaber. They too were pretty cool ideas for art. Film wise the script though could have been better. Duel of Fates exactly the same. Fab art work, script work - not great.

Usually I would agree, but in this case, no. It's not the art works which excites me about DOTF, but the ideas. Furthermore I have seen concept arts for TROS before the movies was released and they were not as exciting.
