The Vigilance? I know we keep thinking in terms of the Inflictor because of the image in TFA and the Lost Stars novel. Though why would they have a ship already destroyed. Just makes me wonder if this has a lot of Admiral Sloane. Jakku would make sense, last hurrah of what is left of the empire.

    @Darth Sidious
I guess you’re right! The Ravager was the last remaining Super Star Destroyer in the Imperial fleet after the Battle of Endor.

Nah, that is no venator class destroyer. Take a look at the exposed conning towers- it's the Ravager.

I have to admit, despite my dislike of the first book, I find myself somewhat temped by this one. I think I'll let some of the other Cantina members who also weren't crazy about the first book weigh in on it before purchasing though(Harloff's positive review definitely helps).

"...a meeting place since time immemorial — a nexus point drawing together countless lines of allegiance and opposition, a place not only where friend and foe can meet, but where complex conflicts are worn down flat so that all may sit, have a drink and a meal, listen to a song, and broker whatever deals their hearts or politics require."
    sounds like our Cantina!

I didn't understand the dislike of the book from some people. It wasn't my favorite but I thought it was decent. People do like to complain just to complain.

If I had to guess, even thoughh i didnt read it myself, it might have been from the lack of characters like Luke Skywalker?

I found it dull more than anything else, primarily because, other than Sinjiir, I didn't feel a connection with any of the heroes in the book. I literally had to force myself to finish reading it. I agree that it wasn't as bad as some made it seem, but I was still very disappointed by it nonetheless. A better book IMO would have been a collection of short stories about how the galaxy at large was changing post RotJ, as those excerpts in the book were the most interesting parts.

That may have been the case for a number of readers expecting something different, but plenty of EU stories in the past have thrived without much presence from the main heroes, or even new stories like Lost Stars. If an author can create engaging characters than most people will go along for the ride without issue. Who knows though, it sounds like Wendig may have fixed his character issues in Life Debt.

I think that they may have a tough time with the new EU as there's not much there in terms of quantity to choose from and they're being tasked with being the grandfathers of the new new one

Fair enough. I agree with this part, however, it was slow paced and I remember putting the book down for a couple of weeks before finishing. Honestly, I got Battlefront for Christmas and read the first few chapters and haven't read it since.

Definitely possible. While I think the book was a poorly written book, the sheer hate it got on arrival was somewhat surprising. I would compare it to the hate that the new Ghostbusters movie is getting. Does the movie look like another lame, tired reboot? Yes. Have the trailers been underwhelming so far? Yes. Does it deserve the sheer hatred and vitriol its getting for looking like another sub-par reboot in a long line of sub-par reboots? No. Same goes for this book, its not great by any standards, but the hate it got early on was just a bit ridiculous.

Conversely, just like with Ghostbusters, defenders of the book sometimes resort to various forms of shaming in order to silence valid criticisms. If you don't like then you must be a homophobe or a rabid EU fan, etc.

I think it's time I starting getting these new novels. I guess I need to move on from my ex (her name being Legends) and see what else is out there.

i don't understand the hate for the first Aftermath book at all ~ i attribute much of it to knee-jerk reactionism. i was never a fan of reading EU stuff, but i'm enjoying most of it now. Wendig's style may not be to everyone's enjoyment (frankly i struggled with Gray's Lost Stars narrative melodrama more and was so grateful she modified that style for Bloodline).

i think Wendig's first book did have some pacing problems, but ultimately i enjoyed the story and love love love Sinjir and Jas and Mister Bones.

@JeffG., regarding Battlefront, i've done the same thing with Tarkin, which a lot of people have recommended ~ ha!

ultimately it's all just personal taste.

I think A New Dawn took me the longest to read. Out of the books I've finished. I had to force myself to get through it.

I really loved Aftermath when I read it a second time.
