Although we've seen just the first movie of the sequel trilogy, I was wondering what do you guys think when you compare those two stories?
For those of you who read those books, what stands out for you in TFA in contrast to Thrawn trilogy and vice versa?
For me, TFA story setting is much more interesting than in the book because the whole state of the galaxy has more grit and rawness. It's chaotic, The Republic doesn't care for the First Order threat. You have a Jedi killer Kylo Ren who really is badass, and I really like the fact that he is unstable, that he is powerful and talented like his grandfather but is not trained to the full capacity.
In comparison, Thrawn trilogy set the Skywalker family in some peculiar roles. Luke and Leia ruling the Republic from their big temple in Coruscant, I just can't picture it. I never thought that Luke will ever be that kind of character.
It's much more logical for him to devote him self on rebuilding the Jedi Order than to rule The Republic.

In Thrawn books I really liked the fact that Imperial fleet had a pretty big role, so I hope that in Episode VIII we will see what kind of armada does the First Order have in their hands. And also, the Thrawn character is great, I hope they will use him in the movies because he would blend in perfectly.

That's just a part of my opinion. What do you guys & girls think?
NOTE: This is a thread just for people who are willing to share their opinion on either of the stories, not to bash TFA/books and say "that sucks, this is better". :)

well I loved TFA but the Thrawn stuff would be hard to bring to film but could be done. Some stuff could be used..... I like all his books myself.
However, as far as book go, I do think a film based on Shadows of the Empire would be fantastic.

I think they're going to recycle some things from the Throng trilogy, Mara Jade being one of them.

I hope Snoke has a better backstory than Joruus. I also hope that if they're canonized, Thrawn doesn't wear white uniform and Mara Jade is a daughter or granddaughter of Palpatine and Talzin.

they're not going to do anything from expanded universe without explaining it in the films. They will do new stuff, because the normal audience wouldn't understand what all the eu is about. That's why they killed the eu. Only Thrawn trilogy was good by the way. All the post-ROTJ EU was crap lacking direction and orientation.

Probably Rey's mother, won't have the same name but she'll have red hair.. her and Luke probably had a secret relationship ala Anakin/Padme

    Thrawn and KOTOR

I meant post- ROTJ. I also liked KOTOR. As for Rey's mother. They will have to explain this on screen and not in other media. They will also have to explain Luke has a wife and that this wife has some substance to the general story. My guess is that Felicity Jones' rogue one character will be revealed in episode VIII as Rey's mother and Luke's wife and that some nods to this relationship will already be given in the second and third acts of rogue one

Mmm hope they would find a way to bring Grand Admiral Thrawn and Mara Jade. But I agree, some stuff from the Thrawn Trilogy was not that good... for example, all them living in Coruscant? Winter? The Noghri? Joruus? Agree, hope Snoke - whoever he ends up being - has a better backstory.

Leia being trained as a Jedi was one of the things I missed from TFA, but I can see the point the new canon is making regarding choices, rather inherited skills or abilities. Don't get me started on Jacen and Jaina lol.

Ironic that the "Dislike" received was from Darth Caedus himself...

After seeing TFA I'm glad she did not take up the jedi mantle, I felt her purpose was best to sit this one out, my friends often reminded me of the below pic that there was still hope of a jedi appearance but our hopes will have to wait, still 2 more movies to go, don't worry about this dislikes I've got 70 so far;)

Comparing to the Thrawn Trilogy probably isn't the best based on the timeframe of TFA...

NJO is a more suitable time period, and as far as that goes, I'm a lot happier with the new story.
The New Republic is still struggling, as it should.
There's no Force-invisble, warrior cult from another galaxy invading the place.
    No awful Chewbacca Death scene.

The Thrawn trilogy was all plot without much character development. TFA was the exact opposite. I think it's what was needed.
Not a huge fan of the Thrawn books, to be fair. I enjoyed reading them but I think they also missed the mark in many instances with regard to the characters, and honestly, if you thought TFA had a lot of fan service...
