Watching the film this way is worth it, guys! I did it. Really heightens the experience and emotions to give the music such prominence.

Ah, I wish they released more footage about the scoring of TLJ. The Blu-ray documentaries have literally nothing about it, which is weird.

There is no truly extensive look at JW's work in any of the SW documentaries (just great bits and pieces when you look at it), so this would be a good opportunity to put something together if they really have recorded over 1800 hours of BTS. Unless, of course, JW wants the process to remain secretive, but I don't think he cares. :p

We need a documentary just for John Williams' journey for Episode IX!

Yeah, a full chronicle of making of a Star Wars score would be the best thing ever! But I doubt JW would invite cameras to his house to capture the early part of the writing process... ;) An extensive studio report would still be amazing, though.

I agree. The (pardon the musical expression) lack of fanfare with respect to Williams, compared to TFA, is a bit surprising. Now, granted, TFA was Williams coming back after 10 years and beginning a new trilogy. But aside from this nice "hidden" featurette, a comment here or there by Rian, and the one radio interview Williams did, everyone's been pretty quiet about the musical side of The Last Jedi.

I also notice, curiously, that Williams seems not to have said much about working with Rian Johnson. He gushed about how great JJ was to work with, and I'm sure he liked working with Rian, but has he mentioned him by name or said how he felt about the experience?

I think it's a matter of him not being asked. As you mentioned, there weren't many John Williams interviews about TLJ. I'm also sure he had no reasons to dislike the process of working on TLJ. ;) I think both Rian and J.J. let JW do his thing and didn't intervene much.

I still can't get over how there wasn't even a 5-minute segment on scoring in the documentary... As seen in the little teaser, they clearly have a lot of footage shot over multiple days (you can see Rian wearing different outfits). Hopefully they're keeping it for something, which on one hand is frustrating, but on the other hand it's better than not getting anything.

The score-only version of the film will also be directly available through iTunes.

Is this a Rest of the World thing or still a US only feature?

That's a good question. However, because iTunes, contrary to Movies Anywhere, is available internationally, I guess that this service will be a go-to spot for people outside of US who want to get the score-only version of the film.

In the liner notes for the soundtrack of The Phantom Menace, George Lucas wrote the following:

"I like to think of the Star Wars films as silent movies, movies whose stories are carried forward visually and by a musical score. It took the musical genius of John Williams to fully realize this vision."

I guess Rian Johnson finally got to turn this idea into reality!
