Lucasfilm has lifted the lid on The Acolyte series headed to Disney+, providing a slew of new information on what the show will look like.

As part of a massive interview with Vanity Fair, showrunner Leslye Headland reveals a few details about the project, stemming from the time period it's set in. Vanity Fair acknowledges previous reports that Amandla Stenberg is rumored to be playing a lead role in the show, and mentions that Headland has been working on it for the last two years from her home. The writing stage is complete and now casting is underway.

We knew that The Acolyte takes place at the end of the High Republic era, but Vanity Fair confirms that the show will be set roughly 100 years before the events of The Skywalker Saga. Headland was particularly interested in charting the rise of the Sith in the shadows; how they could hide in plain sight without attracting the Jedi's attention.

Headland reiterated the initial premise that The Acolyte will be a mystery thriller, and states the show is set in a period with a new name different to that used to describe The High Republic - The Age of Enlightenment, a time of peace and prosperity when the Jedi Order became withdrawn from the public eye, rarely getting into physical confrontations.

That is already a departure from the Jedi we know in The High Republic. While that era promised and delivered Jedi Knights who had more personality and lived a little more freely than the Jedi we saw in the prequels, it sounds like The Acolyte will show us the Jedi's transition into the Order we recognize from those movies.

The Acolyte will likely arrive in 2023, but we have no more information than that when it comes to the release date. Hopefully it won't be too long a wait to get more details on the series. In the meantime, we'll have plenty of other Star Wars content to occupy our attention.

Sounds like this will be making certain aspects (at least) of the High Republic books noncanon...?

This also happened with many of the Disney-era books when TRoS and even Mando came out. I thought the idea of ditching the old EU was so that we'd have a canonical standard for everything, including books and comics?

Cool article. Not a lot of new stuff, but...

    Grammar Rodeo

So the Spider-Man team is working on this... gotta admit the fact it's not in the High Republic and in the Mando timeline is a big thumbs down from me. Maybe this means it's not about young force users. That just isn't something I'm interested in given what happens in the Sequel Trilogy.

    Movies

That should kill off any hopes for a film in 2023 unless Taika Waititi is ready to start filming ASAP. Jenkins project is pushed back. Rian Johnson is still on Lucasfilm's good graces, but seems unlikely there's a trilogy ever coming with his busy schedule.

    Why do you say that?

    I know it's early but....

I have a bad feeling about this.

This is the project I'm the most excited about. Outside of Skywalker saga, great showrunner... what's the problem?

I hope you're right. I just sense an impending disturbance in the force. ;)

I just said I was looking forward to it the most. Not sure what I'm right about? What's the issue you're worried about?

I respect the showrunner but it's the one Disney+ Star Wars series that Kathleen Kennedy has a direct hand in 'influencing.'

She's no more or less involved in that project than any of the others. Kennedy runs the company. This idea she's more or less involved in any live action project is complete nonsense generated by grifters on the internet to monetize outrage.

Seriously? Yeah, Kennedy runs the company but if you believe she has the same control over Jon Favreau's vision for his SW shows as she does with Leslye Headland's Acolyte, I'm not the one believing nonsense.

Bottom line, neither of us knows how good or bad The Acolyte will be. I wholeheartedly hope you are 100% right and will applaud you if you are.

Kennedy's background is producing. She's one of the most accomplished producers of all time. It's why Lucas picked her to lead the company. Why would her involvement change? She's in charge of the company and picking creative people. This idea she's micro managing the creative side on selective products is really just bizarre. I don't know if The Acolyte will be good, but it won't be because of the level of a change of involvement of Kennedy. She's is as responsible for Mando as she is for the other projects. That's how the business works. Anything else is just internet nonsense.

Bottom line: don't believe misinformation merchants on the internet.
