I guess the time has come to start now again, a comprehensive threat about this topic like we had it for all the other movies too.

Knowing that we did not yet leave the era of rumors and theories, nonetheless the convention draws near, and there are tids and bits of information that, meanwhile, can be found for starting a sound speculation.

First time I read about the rumors this week, what the new Lego Sets for Episode IX might be, to be released in fall/winter 2019, and that includes a Y-Wing, I was suspicious.

Then this on a potential valid poster:
    epIX_ResistanceFighters.png

And here’s a recycled design form the original concept art for TFA: The TIE ‘Interceptor’ (?) successor. Interesting!

    Poster

So let’s discuss and examine all the information coming in the next weeks and months regarding Starfighters like the TIE Echelon, new Walker variants, red Stormtroopers and more!

Maybe I'm just a sucker for new troop designs, but I'm most intrigued by the red troopers.

The first thing I notice is the return of the vertical line in the visor, reminiscent of the clone troopers (or perhaps, of Kylo's own mask, now that he's supreme leader).

But I don't want to discount the clone connection. In JJ's last film, Kylo seemed to approve of the idea of a clone army, and he saw it as a way to threaten Hux's power (since Hux oversees the storm troopers).

If these WERE clones, it wouldn't just be a callback to the clone wars. It's built into the story as a way for Kylo to lord power over Hux.

And not to read too much into a merchandise poster, but the positioning of the red troopers really emphasizes their uniformity in a way that reminds me of clone troopers much more than storm troopers.

I can definitely see Kylo with Clones loyal only to him.

This new tie fighter looks nice, I just hope that's not Kylo's tie fighter.

I would like to see once again the badass Tie Silencer and his "bat shape" shuttle.

Hm, I just wonder what vehicles the Knights of Ren would use. A bunch of ragtag Starfighters modified by their own? Or standard 1st Order Hardware? A special stealth transport?

I with you, but unfortunately I think you're gonna have to wait for the old republic trilogy if you want something fresh design-wise. The ST is all about cashing in OT nostalgia.

I hope the new Y-wings are at least little bit more imaginative than the new A-wings in TLJ. I thought the updated X-wing design was pretty clever, but the TLJ A-wings are essentially the same ships with a few sharper corners here and there. Just seemed like a pretty half-assed redesign. I also was under the impression that B-wings were the replacement for Y-wings by ROTJ, but sadly they're nowhere to be seen in the ST...It's a small detail, but that bothers me a bit.

The red troopers are cool. About as cool as another variant of storm trooper can be, I guess. If they are clones that would be kinda cool, my question would be are they more clones of Jango or someone else?

Maybe they are all clones of Finn... :p

Really would prefer some new stuff. For the most part, imo, the ships/vehicles in the ST have been disappointing. Then again, I've never been overly happy with the look of the ST overall. What a missed opportunity to really distinguish itself from everything else. All those years ago, even before the prequels, I wondered what really awesome ships, planets, etc. etc. would be in the sequel trilogy.. sigh.

That rumored 'droid junkyard' or factory could be neat. I would love to see a whole bunch of different droids.

I just had a crazy thought. What if the resistance pulls a Night of the Living Droids to build their army? If they do find a droid junkyard or droid graveyard, they could find generations of droids from early battle droids through the Separatists and then OT droids. We know C3PO will have a big role in this film. I'd love to see 3P0 and R2 leading the charge of abandoned battle droids against Kylo Ren's red armored clone army. Full circle for the saga.

I remember some TFA concept for a TIE shuttle that looked really cool, wouldn't mind seeing that show up in Episode 9: The Legend Of Curly's Gold.

I'll be pretty disappointed if that poster is real and we just get slightly rehashed versions of the X-Wing, A-Wing, and Y-Wing again. The nacelles on the Y-Wing seem to be a bit longer than the standard BTL Y-Wings from the original trilogy, meaning this is likely a further modified version or it has been completely redesigned (which is odd because even by ANH the Y-Wing was outdated). The A-Wing is the RZ-2 from TLJ, a slightly different version than the RZ-1 from ROTJ. I'm not sure if the re-usage of these vehicles has to do more with making us remember our childhood, or a simple lack of imagination. It would be nice to get some new fighters and bombers.

I was hoping from the outset that the ships in the ST, X-Wing, TIE, etc., would be sleeker and less 'clunky' or 'boxy', but, alas, the updated ships are more of the same with only relatively minor changes. I've seen images online from fans who've designed BETTER and COOLER updated X-wings, Star Destroyers etc. than what was used for these new films.

But apart from that, I was hoping for completely new designs for ships in the ST. Haven't much of that thus far, and what we've gotten have been fairly uninspired and hardly iconic. IMO.

I couldn't agree more. I suppose along with the similarities in story lines of the ST and OT, it only makes sense for them to use vehicles that they know fans already like and recognize.

Realizations like this make me wish the ST had just been its own thing, a reboot of Star Wars almost, rather than a continuation from the OT. It's just too similar.

Same over here. And I have the bad feeling that they won’t change anything with that strategy for the last flic from the Skywalkers saga.
A man can dream, a man can dream…

But let’s wait after Celebration, I think we will have more to discuss by then.

I’m sure that somebody has written about this in another thread all ready, but nonetheless…

So it’s not Kylo’s TIE Silencer we have here (@Addi Ras)
    tie_silencer.jpg

But a NEW hybrid of a TIE Interceptor und those Silencer wings, in the colors of the 1st Orders Special Forces. But looking FO fighter for me so far.

That small skiff with the heroes is followed by Speeder Bikes (?) and Jump Troopers (for the first time in live action).

    Sith trooper alert!

    Sith_trooper_01.jpg

Here we go again: It’s almost impossible to have a new SW movie without a new trooper design (can’t think of any except for Ep. I maybe).

It holds an interesting implication, if the term ‘Sith trooper’ would also be used in-universe. Because then the Sith, known as the ancient evil power of a long gone past, would once again officially declare their claim to power after thousands of years. Thus, the Sith will no longer be a secret society in their claim to rule the galaxy.

    Sith_trooper_02.jpg

Looking at the armor, with the helm visor having this split in the middle, they’re truly linked to the early saga due to the clone trooper helmet similarities, which was not sported by other troopers in between to such an degree.

    Clone_trooper_Phase2.jpg

And for whatever reason, they have a minimal Death trooper vibe to me too.

So the First Order have created a whole bunch of random new troops, spaceships and weapons just to catch a tiny group of Resistance people, whose total numbers could fit in the cargo bay of the Millennium Falcon several times over?! Logical....

Naah, I think their approach is more or less to suppress the known galaxy with fancy military stuff, those poor resistance guys are just a side note on the 1st Orders rise to the top. The FO military will also have to deal with planetary defense forces, pirates, crime syndicates and such.
