Luke says this line towards the climax in TLJ. With all of the backlash of killing off Luke Skywalker, this makes me believe that Luke really might not be gone. He disappears into the force in the end, yes. However, I think that he simply used (or found) a new force power that can allow him to move between the real world and the world of the force to a degree. I thought about this because of what Yoda did with the force tree and the lightning. He allowed everyone including Ben to think he has died so that no one will bother to look for him. I think that, if he comes back in IX, he will end up being the true catalyst for the movie, especially now that Carrie is unfortunately dead. I think Luke will make a come back and ultimately save the galaxy, redeem Ben, and walk off into the sunset (the original ending for ROTJ) with Rey taking on the task of bringing back the Jedi. What do you guys think?

He is not really gone because he's now a Force Ghost if he chooses to be one. <-- Star Wars lore.

He just jumped into the lake and went for a swim, using a new Force power known as Force teleportation so that only his body is teleported and thus his clothes are left. He is alive and well, and will appear in solid flesh form <--- Retcon, introducing new Force power. Disregard Star Wars lore.

    Yoda Force ghost summoned Lightning.

Summoning Lightning by Luke as a ghost and hitting Kylo in his ass would be actually perfectly canon.

I don't think force ghosts can physically intervene in real world matters otherwise we would have seen a Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Anakin and Yoda smackdown on Kylo Ren by now.

I know that! What I meant by 'physically intervene' is they can't harm or attack, touch etc , a corporeal being.

Obviously, Yoda's lightning trick is a new development so who knows what might be introduced in the future.

I'm sure we'll see some baiting of Kylo Ren by Luke's force ghost, though not physically interacting.

Uneti tree is ,tree. its a Force sensitive plant.
Yoda hit it by summoning Lightning .

Ueti tree and Kylo Ren's ass, if Luke's Force ghost would have desire to excercise such nagotiations are not that much different targets.

I interpret Luke's last scene in TLJ as his dying because I figure the effort to force project like he did would have killed him. We have Kylo Ren saying to Rey earlier in the film during one of their early force bond scenes "You're not doing this, the effort would kill you", so I'm assuming that Luke is gone. Of course, he can always come back as a force ghost in Episode IX.

I figured this just meant we'd get Jar Jar back, but you're idea makes sense too.

We must ask the question of how they choose to use their power as a Force ghost. Smacking down Kylo Ren likely isn't their goal.

"That's how we're going to win, by saving what we love, not fighting what we hate."

I am hoping that he returns and has a strong presence as paste it, but Mark Hamill doesn't really seem interested anymore.

You need to remember that Force Ghost Yoda whacked Luke on the head with his cane while they talked. How this is possible, I don't know...but it happened. :)

As far as Luke not being dead, I think it's a real possibility that I've pondered also. I've been thinking that if Luke has figured out how to project his likeness to another place, that he may have ALSO learned how to just physically materialize elsewhere. We have to remember the "time construct/portal" from Rebels...this may be something like that, and to an old guy like me...that might redeem Rian Johnson in my eyes for "killing" Luke.

Either way, I'll still be happy...we're not finished with Luke yet. He'll be back, in one form or another...preferably in the flesh!! :)

I'd say more like disregard the issues that caused the backlash . .

He is probably at least contracted because a lot of tentpole movie deals these days include at least a 3 movie deal

Yoda's Force Lightning is just another one of TLJ's many flaws as it creates all sorts of plot holes/inconsistencies. Force Ghosts, which were never all that well explained in the first place, apparently can now destroy things in the real world. This creates the problem of "well why don't they just do the same move again?"

My internal canon - which TLJ has stretched incredibly thin - is that it is something that requires a place strong in the Force, such as the Jedi Temple. So Yoda (or Luke) couldn't just go around lightning bolting everything in sight.

I think he would be very interested in taking place in a good SW movie. Hamill clearly has tremendous affection for Luke Skywalker. His lack of interest is the result of what happened to his character in TLJ.

Love this possibility OP, Luke returning in another level.

That's familiar in SW world, but never explored.

The Emperor didn't know how to cheat death.
Darth Vader didn't know how to cheat death.
    Both were obsessed with it.

What will happen If Luke is who knew how to do it?
Could be interesting for those who still haven't found innovation in SW. And with Luke it could have double impact.

it's just misinterpretations that mark hamill has said in the media about how it's no longer his story and how he has moved on from it

I think this comes from a recent interview where he talks about Carrie Fisher dying and effect it has had in, essentially, diminishing his enthusiasm for returning to SW and compounded by his initial reservations about Luke's portrayal in TLJ.
