Just how powerful was Obi-Wan? He was known as a bit of an over achiever, but he always got the job done when it really needed to happen. Especially during one on one Light saber combat. He defeated Maul, held his own against Grievous AND took out Anakin Skywalker! Seems to me like his Saber skills were definitely underrated..

Personally I would never underrate or put him in a list of underrated swordsman.

Kenobi was easily one of, if not the strongest defensive/ counter swordsman of his era! Second only to Windu in this catagory, it's the reason he is able to defeat anakin and grievous, because he is raw counter and defence strategy!

I would certainly not rate him highly in the pure force use but he is easily still in the top 5 Jedi of the PT and Clone times.

He knew when he was in over his head as well. He knew when to walk away and to run, too.

He was more of a skilled mental strategist than a skilled combatanat, although he was still highly skilled in fighting, and that is how he was such a good fighter.

    When did he run
Just in the Clone War era? I'd maybe rate him at 5 overall ever? One of the coolest parts about the Prequels and Clone Wars was the obvious respect Obi-Wan received from the Council members and Masters. In ROTS he was already giving advice and opinions in the council when typically Yoda and Windu were the only two to have a final say. It's like they would take a back seat at times and listen to Kenobi's wise advice. Amazing!

I'd say as far as both combat, force weilding and wisdom:
    Yoda
    Mace Windu
    Revan
    Anakin Skywalker
    Dooku
    Obi-Wan
Luke Skywalker (this will prob change drastically after Episode 8)
    Qui-Gon Gin
    Kit Fisto
    --- Double Post Merged, Nov 3, 2016 ---

Actually Revan isn't canon yet, so I gotta bump him out making Obi Wan #5 on my list! :)

Obi-Wan was a very good swordsman and strategist. Not the best, but very good.

I totally agree. Obi-Wan has a better record fighting Siths than Yoda. (Beat Maul, Beat Vader, Lost to Vader - vs. Draw with Dooku, Lost to Sidious)

That draw with Dooku was annoying. Here we have the first time we get to see Yoda using a light saber and he doesn't punk Dooku's punk ass nearly enough.. He could have at least embarrassed him a little more since he probably wasn't swinging for the kill. Even just a powerful force push that throws him into the side of his ship before he goes for his escape!?

Why didn't Yoda just force pull Anakin and Obi wan out from under that object that Dooku tried to crush them with? If he would have, he could've bounced back over to Dooku and whooped him like we all wanted him to!!

That whole sequence was just as disappointing as the rest of the film. Like the other two prequels there are some great moments/story telling and visuals in them, but AOTC has the fewest by far which is strange because it was in position to be the best!

When he had to and not as a coward. From Cody in ROTS when. A few times in the Clone Wars, the He and Ventress against Maul and Savage comes to mind. It was knowing he was outnumbered. I think it was brilliant actually, not cowardly at all. It was never without trying.

I know that there is a great divide between Star Wars fans concerning the PT, and I for one thought they were entertaining and had some great parts in each film. But overall I was disappointed. That being said, the fight between Obi Wan and Vader on Mustafar was EPIC!!

I agree. It's amazing to me that people can't still get some joy out of the prequel films. There's a lot I love about them really. And also a lot that I cringe at, but in the end I keep watching them because it's THE Star Wars Universe. The score by far bests anything I've ever heard and the feeling I get watching them is a feeling I get with anything else SW or Indiana Jones..I dig it all!

In my mind, the reason Kenobi was great was because he was both strategically and tactically great. Because of that, Kenobi was painfully aware of both his strengths and weaknesses, and was excellent at picking out how to take advantage of his situation and surroundings. The better part of valor is staying alive to fight another day, and learn from your mistakes. Kenobi exemplified this in spades. He knew when to push for victory and when to preserve his life and escape. This is why he was dangerous as both a lightsaber duelist and as a battlefield commander.

Absolutely a top 5 strongest jedi, and in raw sword fighting, I'd say top three behind Windu and Luke. Although he is very counter oriented, it is very effective.

I don't think he was that good. And in his first duel with Anakin, he was very lucky.

This is how I view it. The ones that could best Obi-Wan were the ones that could use force powers while engaged in a saber fight. Maul force pushed Obi-Wan to his near doom and Dooku punked him a few times with force use. Anakin was simply too fast for Dooku for him to have time to use any force powers on him by ROTS. Obi-Wan was much more of a parry and counter fighter. Anakin's relentless attack was his demise against a patient Master like Obi-Wan.

This is also why Yoda tells Obi-Wan that he is not powerful enough to defeat the emperor even though Anakin may have been fast enough to defeat Sidious as well. It's about mismatches and Obi Wan did not have many which means he was an outstanding duelist/soldier.

He may have been lucky to get the high ground, but he was smart enough to realize the importance of getting the high ground, and skilled enough to fend off Anakin up until that point.
